Activity 1.7 electrolysis of water |
|
Answer» Activity:Take a glass jar fitted with 2carbon electrodes.one acts as a cathode the other acts as an anode. Two test tubes are inverted on the carbon rods to collect some gas. They are connected to a6V battery. Now fill the glass jar with 100 ml of acidified water. Now thermal decomposition takes place and releases twice the volume of hydrogen gas and one volume of oxygen gas in the form of bubbles in the test tube. Now carefully take out hydrogen containing test tube and take it near the candle it burns very brightly. In the ratio of 2:1 volumes of hydrogen and oxygen are collected respectively. Very easy. Composition of water 2 molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of oxygen. That\'s why 2:1 ratio. |
