Solve : BSOD's and can't get into XP.?

Answer»

(Some of this is copied+pasted from another forum I posted for help on)

Yesterday both of my headsets were playing up and randomly cutting out, I decided to uninstall them, then rebooted the PC.

It only got so far as just before the windows XP splash screen, and it just froze with a black screen. I rebooted again and it kept freezing at the same point.
I then tried to boot into safe mode, again it only got so far and it rebooted by itself. But after trying "last known good configuration" I got this BSOD (though oddly it wasn't blue.. it was GREEN *photo*) :

***STOP: 0X0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x8970316F, 0xBA4C36F4, 0xBA4C33F0)

Right now I'm having to use my Ubuntu live CD so I could get to firefox and try and get some help.

- Loading Windows as normal does the same as last known good configuration,

- Safe mode shows that big list of things and says "Press Esc to cancel loading SPTD.sys" then it reboots,

- Safe mode with NETWORKING shows the XP splash screen and loading bar then gives this BSOD:
*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x89D3B16F, 0xF789E6F4, 0xF789E3F0).

Safe mode just reboots after cancelling SPTD.sys, but safe mode with networking and cancelling SPTD.sys gives this BSOD: ***STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x89EEF16F, 0xF789E6F4, 0xF789E3F0).

I did a repair install over the top of my existing XP installation (suggestion from another forum), it went fine up until the splash screen/loading bar, I got another "green screen of death". Safe mode just reboots again, safe mode with networking gives a BSOD. Haven't tried the other options but I'm guessing I'll just get more BSOD's from those too...

PC specs:
Windows XP Home SP3,
Asus P5Q3 Motherboard,
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550,
Gainward HD 4870 512MB GS,
2GB Novatech PC3-8500 1066Mhz DDR3 RAM,
250GB Seagate SATA Harddrive (Master),
1.5TB Seagate SATA harddrive (Slave).

Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks Pretty much every troubleshooting step for a 7E error requires booting to EITHER the actual installation or safe mode. One suggestion Microsoft makes is updating the bios (assuming there is an update available) and it certainly can't hurt, but the fact this error arose immediately after uninstalling a headset is unusual and baffling. How, exactly, did you uninstall the headsets?Quote from: Allan on July 13, 2010, 01:17:31 PM
Pretty much every troubleshooting step for a 7E error requires booting to either the actual installation or safe mode. The only thing I can think of is there was some coincidental hardware problem or error at just the same time, but that's also very unlikely. Did you have your critical data backed up? If so, you should probably try to format and REINSTALL the OS. If not, you can try a parallel install (I'll explain if needed).Quote from: Allan on July 13, 2010, 01:59:12 PM
I assume you mean in Device Manager, yes?

If that's all you did I can't imagine why you are having this problem or why a repair install didn't work. Most of my files are on the bigger, 2nd harddrive anyway.
Could you please explain a parallel install? I don't want to format and reinstall XP unless it's the only thing left to try really. The link doesn't work. How about you just tell me?

A parallel install would only be to retrieve the files. It would be instlling a second instance of XP on the same drive on which it's currently installed. If you can't resolve the problem, I'd suggest a format and reinstall. But let's see if anyone else comes up with any ideas first.Quote from: Allan on July 13, 2010, 02:20:59 PM
The link doesn't work. (I have no idea why I did it this way in the first place.. I was just going through the menus seeing what I could do to try and get my headset to work)

Doing a parallel install would just take up space then if it's only to retrieve files from. My C drive has 133.5GB space left from the 250GB. If I backup the files I need, it'd be better to just format and reinstall then, if that's what I end up doing. That's not how you uninstall a piece of hardware. You uninstalled a driver and I don't know which one. Anyway, I still don't understand why you can't do a repair install or get to safe mode - sorry.
