Solve : Can't load XP after installing win 2000 on a Slave Drive:? |
Answer»

Hello ,
i h' XP installed in my C: and it is Primary Master no logical Drives. Another Slave Drive SAMSUNG 4GB ( 2 bad sectore found ), i installed Win2000 this MORNING, on restarting the BootManager has an option to select win2000 or XP.
When i choose XP it says, missing file, Windows\System32\Config\System d. While Win 2000 loads without any problem.
I tried to Recover using fixboot by winxp CD, still no good:
any suggestions how to i fix this.try reparing windows xp boot loader. The following is a general procedure recommended by Microsoft.
The first thing to do is to install Windows 2000 on a NEW or him to dry. Specify a suitable partition size for Windows 2000.
After the above has been completed, you may install Windows XP on a second partition. Windows XP will properly update the boot loader and the boot menu so that you will have a choice between Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Failure to install the operating systems in chronological order will cause a failure to the newer operating system.
This is a brief summary of what you will find by digging to the Microsoft knowledge base.

Now I'll offer my own work around for the problem. I would take another drive that I would like to use and proceed to do a copy, that is an image copy, of Windows 2000 to the first partition on the new drive. Then I would do whatever is needed to make sure that Windows 2000 will boot up properly, such as using fixMBR and fixboot. Next, I would image copy the existing Windows XP installation to a second primary partition on that drive. Then I would edit the boot.ini so that there will be a name selection for two operating systems on the first and second partition.

if necessary, I would use the Windows XP install CD and go to the recovery console and do the repair again for both the boot loader and the Master boot record. As I recall, Windows XP prefers its own boot loader to that of Windows 2000. But it is backward compatible with Windows 2000'

I do not know of any are easier way to do it.
But it could be that all you need to do is boot from the install CD for XP and do them the boot repair and the in the MBR repair. But I am not sure if that is the right solution.

I have Imaged both 2000 and XP on my other Slave Drive Seagate 30 GB.

Maybe i should have installed 2000 first:
Although i comprehend your reply , when the problem arose i did Repair install of XP first and then 2000 with both CD's, but it wasn't of much help. But i haven't Restored the Image, i think i'll leave this idea of having 2 OS on my Drive. Because on one occasion my (older)Seagate 10 GB had died due to faulty IDE pluging , and now Samsung Drive is showing similar symptom.

I have removed the Slave and left with one.

Better i'll wait and see if i can get a bigger Drive, and try your method, if not then the first one. I can ACCOMPLISH more using XP SP3 than 2000, i don't have much use of it , its only i wanted to have a piece of history near to me. Anyways thank you for your suggestion, i'll definitely refer to the above method, when i get a bigger HDD.
check out Super Grub Disk. It can resolve just about any bootloading issue.
