How is tidal energy harnessed ?

Answer» Due to gravitational pull of mainly the moon on the spinning earth, the level of water in the sea rises and falls. The sea level changes during the day and during the night. This phenomenon is called high and low tides and the difference in the sea level gives us tidal energy. The tidal energy can be harnessed by constructing a dam across some narrow openings in the sea. During high tides, the rising water enters the dam and which can be made to fall over the turbines and generate electricity. The electricity generated is not high enough to produce electricity on a large scale. Then there would be limited sites only of sea where dams can be constructed. Thus tidal energy cannot be used as major source of energy.
