Given:

Girls ∶ Boys = 3 ∶ 2

Calculation:

Let assume that number of girls be 3x

And, boys are be 2x

According to the question: 

⇒ (3x - 5) = (2x + 3)

⇒ x = 8

Total strength of the class in the beginning of the year = 2x + 3x = 5x

Total strength of the class in the beginning of the year = 5x = 5 × 8 = 40

∴ The total strength of the class at the beginning of the year was 40

The correct option is 2 i.e. 40
