Solve : Need guidance on rebuilding libraries folders on new machine.?

Answer»

I hope that I can explain this properly. I recently built a new desktop and installed Windows 8. I then used Windows Easy Transfer to try and bring my documents and so forth over the the new machine. I have an SSD that I intend to use mostly for my operating system and an HDD which I hope to keep most of my other files and programs on.

To accomplish this I tried to change the location of my user folders (documents, pictures etc to the new drive. It's labelled E:

However, what happened, either by my action or by the transfer process is that all of the files are on the E: drive but not in folders. They are all in one very long list directly under E: The folders do exist, but any one that I open yields the same long list. So if I click on "Documents" or on "Pictures" I get the same long list of everything.

I've been scouring the internet looking for some direction on this, but I've found nothing. I'm sure that I could eventually MANUALLY sort all of this out, but I want it to be right since I'm hopefully going to be using this system for a long time.

BTW - I don't have folders labelled "My Documents" or "My Pictures" etc. just plain "Documents" or "Pictures"

Also I tried to attach a screen shot, but it seems to be linked back to my directory. Blame that on Win 8 also I guess.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]I think you have to chart over again.
Somehow you told the program to put nit on on E:\ instead of letting the program distribute the files into their receptive locations.

In both Windows 7 and Windows 8 there are ways to organize files and folders without specific drive letters. With the huge space Windows can now manage, on huge HDDs, the reasons for having drive partitions are fewer. Earlier it was to help with the problems related to cluster size and related issues.
There are a number of articles on "how to use MS file transfer wizard in Windows 8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2735227

An earlier ITEM is for Windows XP, which not altogether the same.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306186

Some users will find this article better.
http://www.petri.co.il/windows-easy-transfer-to-migrate-windows-8-pc.htm
(Skip the advertisements, it you like.)

I believe starting over is better that trying to sort it out by manual labor. Some new features of Windows 8 make file transfer easier than before.
Are you saying that I should do a clean install. This is what I've been dreading. I just tried a system restore back to the original installation point but that accomplished nothing HELPFUL so I undid that. I'll have to SERIOUSLY think about it, before I go that route. I do seem to have all of my files they are just not organized and do not seem organizable.

Here is what I think that I did to get into this mess: I took each of the library files (documents, pictures, music etc.) and opened "properties" and then changed the location.

However, it seems that I just changed the location to E: and did not keep the path. That is I went from C:users/me/documents to just E: with no path. That is what I think that I did and it seems to simple but I cannot figure out how to reverse it without making it worse. I did this after a very long session of hooking up this machine for the first time and installing Win 8 then trying to set it up. If you open Windows Explorer and right clik a library there is a Restore Option...
Try that and let us know what happens.Oh yes - I've tried that several times - nothing changes nor improves. Notice from the screen shot in "Libraries" that under each category where there should be a folder labelled "My Documents" or My Pictures" etc. there is instead the same item namely- Data (E:) If I open any of those folders I will get the same thing which is a list of all the files, pictures, docs and whatnot all in one list.

So to summarize, I have all of my files and they are on my second hard drive E: and that is where I want them to be, but I do not have the proper library structure and thus cannot properly sort and organize these items. I need some kind of library repair advice.

LOL -- I keep thinking that if I could properly define the problem, I would be on the way to solving it, but it's hard to explain.Restore Default Libraries doesn't work?

You could create New Libraries with the proper locations.I was also curious as to why Restore didn't work as well..I'm not sure why the restore function didn't solve the problem, but then I'm still not exactly sure what the problem is. Now I'm thinking that it isn't the library per se.

Instead it is either a "path" problem or a "user" problem. It appears to me that the only folders that let you change location (through Properties) are the "My Documents, My Pictures series of folders. It also seems that this action is irreversible.

Check out the weird screen shot attached which is of my user file folder from the desktop.

Where the "My xxxx" should be is the second disk icon. (E:) I tried to reverse this but I can't because it would be turning a parent into a child.

I may be onto a solution. I just tried creating a new user profile and that profile has the correct library structure, but of course there is nothing in it. I might be able to somehow rebuild the new profile to the way I want it and then delete the old profile. I would still rather correct the problem in the original profile because I have everything else set up to my satisfaction. Unfortunately, I have to wait a couple of days because I need to work on other things.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Convoluted i'll say...
Do me a favor when you get a chance...post a pic of how all this shows up in Disk Management. Attached .....................

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Oh, I see, you added E:\ to each library.

You should be able to remove it by right-clicking each Library (such as Pictures, Documents, etc) choose Properties, and you should be able to remove the appropriate entries.I appreciate all of the replies, but so far none of these suggestions has really been helpful for my particular problem. As it stands there longer is a folder titled "My Documents" or My Pictures" anywhere on my system (as far as I can tell).

In the Library there are folders labelled "Documents" and Pictures" and there are "Public Documents" etc. , but these are located on the C: drive and the location cannot be changed.

Just to restate what happened: When I first loaded Win 8 on my system, I went to the properties for each of these files (My Documents etc.) and I clicked on Location. What I should have done next was to change the location from C:\users\nnnn\My Documents to be E:\users\nnn\My Documents.

However, what I did instead was to simply change the location to E:. I failed to leave the path in the change. The result of this ERROR is that these folders have totally disappeared.

This leaves me with no way to make the default save location be on my second hard drive and of course no way to organize my files correctly. They are all on the directly on the drive under E:\

It seems like such a simple error but there is not an obvious way to reverse. At least I haven't found it yet.

I should add that I have tried to create a folder labelled "My Documents" but I get a message saying the folder already exists. If I do a search for it, nothing comes up.Problem Solved - I don't see a way to tag this topic, but I have solved this issue.

Should anyone ever stumble across this same problem. I made a new user account and then deleted the old one. Then I changed the file locations the proper way. Next I deleted all of the files that had come from my old machine and and ran Easy Transfer again. A bit of a hassle but things are how they should be.

This caused a few other problems, but now my files are where I want them and are well organized, just like they were on my old machine.

Apparently - I could have accomplished part of this by fiddling with the registry, but that's a bit dicey. I tried and it didn't totally work for me.
