Is it possible to locate someones computer from an EMAIL address? If someone sets up an email address in a fake name can you work out who they really are with just that information? I know nothing about computers and a friend is having problems with someone who has done this and we want to know who they are! Many thanksIt is possible but not for the average user.
It would require the email provider and/or internet service provider divulges who is associated with the IP used to send the email.
Providers wouldn't and shouldn't do that without a court order (DEPENDING on the country you live in of course).
The CLOSEST you can come without access to the records of the ISP is usually to narrow it down to the city the mail was sent from. ok thanks. We live in the UK. Would the person have had to of done something really bad for them to give that information out? We are just having problems with some SLANDEROUS remarks so probably not that serious to get a court order. Also what does 'IP' stand for?Internet Protocol.
Every computer connected to the internet have an IP address, computers use these to talk to each other. When you send an email the IP address of the sender is usually appended to the email.
I don't think you will be able to get the ISP to tell you who is behind the IP address unless the case is severe enough to involve the police or you're willing to take the ISP to court.I have no legal background, but PERHAPS your keeping a record / copy of the libel(s) made against you may help at some future point.
