Solve : Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Black Screen of Death)?

Answer»

This has been occurring for a while now. While playing Oblivion I randomly receive the "Black Screen of Death." When I say randomly I mean that there's not a specific thing, such as fast traveling, that the black screen always appears on.

When the black screen occurs the sound usually cuts off, sometimes it'll start looping, and the computer doesn't respond to anything. My monitor reports that it's receiving no signal and goes into standby. I have to manually switch off the computer and then turn it back on.

Sometimes when the computer loads back up I get a message SAYING that windows has recovered from a serious error and that I should report it. Other times I do not receive any notification that my computer previously died on me. When I send the error report I am lead to a microsoft page that claims that the problem is being caused by the device driver.

Anyway it tells me to go to the NVIDIA site and update my drivers. I have already done this and the problem is still occurring. Microsoft's other "helpful" solution was to contact the computer manufacturer. I've yet to do that, and I'd rather not have to.

System Info
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600)
System Manufacturer: Gateway
System Model: E4300
BIOS: Default System BIOS
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1022MB RAM
Direct X Version: DirectX 9.0c
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600

How is the cooling?

When the computer is Idle (just turned on + not doing anything), what is the temperature?

You can use Speed Fan to monitor the temperatures.Also post your system specs. I had a look at the game requirements and they seems a bit hefty.

Recommended:

* 3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 1 GB System RAM
* ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

Minimum System Requirements:

* Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP 64-bit
* 512MB System RAM
* 2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 128MB Direct3D compatible video card
* and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
* 8x DVD-ROM drive
* 4.6 GB free hard disk space
* DirectX 9.0c (included)
* DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
* Keyboard, Mouse
Okay, SpeedFan lists the following as the temperatures:
GPU: 75C
CPU: 55C
Internal Temp: 44C
Remote Temp: 43C
HDO: 42C

The GPU and CPU have little flame icons. I'm assuming that's bad. On the list of fans on the left side of the program window, apparently only fans 1 & 4 are currently working.

System Specs
-Windows XP Professional
-1022MB System RAM
-3.00GHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor(2 CPUs)
-128MB Direct3D Video Compatible Card(NVIDIA GeForce6600)
-DirectX 9.0 Compatible Driver
-465GB of Hard Disk Space
-DirectX 9.0c
-Keyboard, Mouse

I'm not exactly sure how to find out the DVD-ROM information or what the DirectX8.1 compatibility is with my sound card.

You have a pretty nice computer there.
Don't worry about the DVD Drive information or the sound card, it shouldn't be important here.

The cooling may be the problem. Those are idle temperatures?

I suggest opening up the case of the computer and PUTTING a fan facing towards the computer and seeing how well it runs.
A fan like this: Thank you.

Alright, I'll try that and tell you if it works or not.The game ran for about an hour and a half with no problems. However I was once again revisited by the black screen.Any ideas what the temperatures were? (or right after you restarted after the black screen)Sorry no it wasn't on my mind at the time, but I will try to recreate the situation ASAP. Then I'll post the temps.All righty.Okay it ran for about 2 hours then shut off. When I rebooted to the computer and looked at the temperatures they read:

GPU: 51C
CPU: 58C
Internal Temp: 40C
Remote Temp: 38C
HD0: 36C

I still have the side of the case off and I have a fan cooling it.I found this. Might be an interesting read. Not sure.

Long shot but maybe you can try a System Restore to a few days before the problem happened.I looked on the website that you gave me a link to and tried some of the solutions. None have worked thus far.

I also tried to system restore. That didn't work either.

I should add that now I've encountered a new problem.
I ran the game and when it brought me up to the black screen instead of locking the computer up the screen began to flicker. Both parts of the flicker were black, but you could tell that one was the black screen in the game and one was the monitor shutting off. Eventually the flickering stopped and the error reporting box came up. I didn't send a error report, and it took me back to my normal desktop.
So I tried running the game, but as soon as I start the application the screen flickers and the error report box comes up again. Basically I can't even get the game to start now.
I did change the screen resolution recently to 1024x768.(It was recommended by the website you gave me.) Could that be causing this?Quote

Can you change it back to your original setting and see?

From what you have told me, it sounds like the game has trouble interfacing with the computer and changing the screen resolution.

If nothing else seems to work, perhaps reinstalling the game?I reset the screen resolution and now I'm back to just problem number one. The crashing.

I've uninstalled this game more times than I can count on my fingers and TOES, but if that is the only way I'll do it again.
