Bought this game for like $8 and received the CD of it. Installed it and went to run it for the first time and the video goes out to lunch with no sync displaying the following:

*Windows key or trying to bring up task manager via CTRL+ALT+DELETE will not bring display back. Only way to get display back is to force shutdown via the power button on the computer and get it back upon restart.

Now for hardware information:

Samsung SyncMaster 19" flatscreen model 940e connected via VGA cable to GeForce 8400GS PCIe video card with 256MB onboard and 768MB Shared with system to display ( 1024MB) available to video, and the latest nVidia drivers for the 8 series installed.

Desktop screen resolution = 1024 x 768 (32-bit) 60hz
OS   = Windows 7 32-bit
RAM = 2 GB DDR2 533Mhz
CPU = Core 2 Duo E6600 ( 2.4Ghz )

Looked at dxdiag to see if I could find something there that needed to be updated etc and below is the dump from that in case anyone sees something I don't.

For ALL Other Games I have absolutely no problems.

, but my install is lacking config.dat file to edit video settings. I am guessing that this is dynamically built upon the first successful run of the game since its missing. I have seen other games with hardware detection before that save configuration files so I am assuming thats the case here.

I tried changing from 32-bit to 16-bit 1024x768 resolution and that didnt help. Also set the display resolution to 1280x1024 16-bit and 60hz in reference to both this site stating 16-bit for this game and the 1280 x 1024 reported optimum by display when video sync goes out to lunch.

Also to note that there is no game sound etc when I get this black screen so it may be more than just a sync issue the game might have actually crashed or went into a hung limbo state taking the video with it.

I am going to try this on another computer and see if I get same results. The other system has an ATI Radeon 5450HD video card, same OS, same resolution default to desktop and see if its video driver related.

Figured I'd open this discussion here in case anyone else has seen this as for I will be checking back here throughout the day.

UPDATE:

Game installed and display behaved on other computer with ATI Radeon 5450HD and same OS version ... so it appears to be directly related to the nVidia 8400GS Graphics Adapter or Driver...


Minimum system requirements of this game are:

FIXED:

Found a way to fix it when playing in the nVidia 3D settings. Attached screenshots of my configuration that worked. Started messing with settings in relation to the exe of this game and lucked out. Not sure if its optimized or not, but I just played it for 15 minutes and it runs pretty well. Only have some delay in the mouse to pointer response controls that were annoying at first but adapted to after about 5 minutes.

Its nice that you can have custom video settings per relation to specific EXE's as seen here in the nVidia Control Panel.

Figured I'd post the solution here vs just saying I am all set in case anyone else ever gets hit with this issue. Might also draw more people here from google search too.

As far as the gameplay goes. I found it interesting that this game is VERY Similar to Torchlight and Diablo 1. Scrolls of Identity and Town Portal were just about an exact match even in appearance in Inventory. Got thru the first level of the dungeon and its a neat dungeon crawler to add to my collection of other dungeon crawlers, but its no Diablo II or III like game. Speaking of Torchlight, I need to see if they have it on CD yet. I know that they were promoting it thru STEAM Client as well as mentioned they should have boxed copies available as well. I like to play offline, and so STEAM is a pain when you need a internet connection to launch your favorite games. Games requiring internet connection to play = games that will break in the future when no longer supported and likely to have no stand alone service to keep them running.
