Answer» I'd appreciate any help on this. On one of my kids games, the screen flashes black and then exits. I can see all of the intro sequences, but when it comes time to play, it just stops. This happens every time. Strange thing is, I can run the game on my Pentium II system (333Mhz) without any problem, but it won't run on my newer system (P4 1.8GHz). I've updated my video diver. I NEED new ideas. Here are the Game spec and my system specs:
Game Min Reqs: PII, 300 MHz, 64MB RAM, DirectX 9.0 compatiable video card with 4MB video RAM
System: P4 1.8 GHz, 256MB DDR, S3 ProSavageDDR video (32MB), DirectX 9.0 running WIndows ME. Whats the OS on the new computer, XP?OH, oops....
well, im not sure...maybe Direct X needs to be updated...but i dont believe that there is an update, so maybe its too "advanced" and you are out of LUCK...idk for sureWhat is the game? Crashes back to the desktop, in fact most game crashes are caused by incompatability, video, sound, ram or heat.
Have you checked the game website for fixes & patches?
Where did you update from, don't use Windows update because the drivers there are out of date, go to the manufacturer's website and get the latest video & sound drivers.
If these steps don't fix it then we will look at your ram.
Do one thing at a time then check the game so we find out what the problem is. Has the game always done this or has it started recently? What game are you referring to?Geme is Veggie Tales Minnesota Cuke and the Coconut Apes. It crashes to the desktop with no message, just stops running. I updated my drivers from the VIA website, which I believe to be my chip manufacturers website. I checked the game website and it says "update your video drivers", which I think I took care of. I'm having the same problem with The Lord of the RINGS The Fellowship of the Ring game.
I've run a Demo version of Radar Sync 2, which supposedly shows me what outdated drivers I have. I have 2 that I haven't updated yet. The CPU to AGP controller and the Enhanced Audio Controller. Should I try updating them as a next step?
Thanks for the info so far.Your best bet would be to
- Patch games
- Make absolutely certain that you the videocard drivers are up to date and properly installed
- Update DirectX to 9.0C if that has not yet been done.
Most old DOS based games WILL NOT run nativly under XP. What you are seeing is the "DOS" window opening and closing right away because XP cannot run the program. To see any messages in the "window" you need to run the game from a command prompt (start, run, CMD, enter, then start the game from the "DOS" prompt), the game still will not run, but you can see any messages.
There are several DOS emulators for XP that do a pretty good job, (VDMS,DosBox...). My kids play Commander Keen on an XP machine using an emulator.Greg, you should register and become a member. QuoteGame is Veggie Tales Minnesota Cuke and the Coconut Apes Thanks for the info so far.
*censored*. I wanted to run that too!!!!
Seriously, it is interesting that it MENTIONS a PII (relatively old) and Direct X9 (relatively new). It may be that your computer is too new to get this thing working or XP does not want to cooperate (imagine that) or there are video driver issues (pretty likely if you have some sort of exotic new card) Lord of the Rings had some fairly steep requiements as I recall.A new computer won't hurt..
