Solve : Getting desparate...?

Answer»

I was having no trouble with Firefox 3.5. Then I downloaded Firefox 3.6. My dial-up connection to the web became mind-numbling exasperating. So I finally re-installed the previous version of Firefox.
Things are just as bad.
I can't even send out a response to a job posting. I use Yahoo for my email.
I don't have a firewall. I use the free version of Avira which doesn't provide such a feature so things can't be happening because of over-zealous firewalls.
Please, anybody, give me some advice here, other than going to an Internet cafe.
Is it my Yahoo account that's causing all the trauma? Maybe I should use GoogleChrome?
Thanks!
Have you tried System Restore?I decided to go for Google Chrome. Things have slightly improved but I'm still unhappy. My Yahoo email account is maddening. I'm going to try another e-mail account, zoho.com.
My computer battery has been weak for some time now. I know it needs replacing but I have been hesitating to do so. Maybe this affects my internet work though none of the other programs on my computer are causing me ulcersPower issues will cause all sorts of flaky things to happen...run on mains as much as you can...Could also be problem with your phone line.To PATIO:

I believe he means through your charger/AC adapter.

my personal recommendation would be to not run off the battery at all, and simply use the Adapter (I don't know of any laptop that doesn't allow for this, but I'm sure they exist). This can eliminate the batteries voltage variances as the cause of the issue. If I'm understanding you correctly, I do not use a laptop but an actual desk-top computer.Quote from: StickyR on March 11, 2010, 09:53:25 AM

oh,ok.

We must have gotten confused by your mention of the CMOS battery

Try restart the browser in Safe Mode.
Quote
On Windows, start using the "Safe Mode" SHORTCUT created in your Start menu or by running firefox.exe -safe-mode.

On LINUX, start with ./firefox -safe-mode

and on Mac OS X, run:
cd /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/
./firefox-bin -safe-mode

Themes and add-ons normally are the slowdowns or java itself can be a issue. If this is the problem running in safemode should work fine and you just need to find the problem plugin/addon/theme and disable, re-install or update it.

Also like you said, installing / reinstalling new software can reset an over-zealous firewall. Your firewalls default settings for the web-browser might be limiting it. I personally never disable security, but as the easiest way - you could try temporary disabled the firewall and run firefox to see if it is this.

Then we can deal with the problem area.Quote from: StickyR on March 10, 2010, 07:22:54 AM

How do you know the CMOS battery is weak? And, how do you think that would be related to your email and internet issues? Most likely, it's not related.

One way a weak CMOS battery might affect OVERALL computer performance is that the correct settings for CPU speed and memory frequency got changed to a lower setting. Here's a simple way to check whether this has happened without going into the CMOS Setup screens where you see BIOS settings. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Do you see the correct CPU speed shown there for your computer?
