Solve : Have browsing capability but nothing else.?

Answer»

Not sure where I needed to post this.  I did a quick search but couldn't find anything relating.
Here is my situation.

I can get on Internet Explorer & surf the web all day long, i'm posting this message with the computer now.  My problem is NOTHING else can gain access.  My AOL tells me it can't find an internet connection, same with my MSN Messenger.  Can't do any streaming with WINDOWS Media player or any other player they all state they can't find internet connection.  I have couple new programs that I downloaded successfully, but to register them they need internet connection & they can't find one either.  I don't have a firewall or any other security block that i'm aware of.  I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling all the above programs including IE with current service packs, hoping they would AUTO detect a connection but to no avail.  I know I have connection because I am posting this.  I don't know what else to check for.

Please help!!

This comment is a bit confusing ....... You say you can use IE , and surf all day ....... so presumably you are able to connect just fine .  Then you say AOL cant find a internet connection ........
What OPERATING system are you using ?
Is this a new computer ?
How long has it been doing this ?
Do you have all the latest updates to the O/S installed ?
What do you have as the default browser ?
Please let us know

Yeah it's confusing me too.  Yes I have access on IE 6, can browse, surf, download.  Cannot stream, AOL says it can't find internet access, MSN says it can't find internet access, programs that use the internet to register can't find internet access - yet I am able to post on this board.  I can even send & receive email via outlook express.

Not a new computer, approx 3 years old Dell Dimension 4100.
It's been doing this for approx 3-4 weeks.
I am running Windows 2000 Professional with all the latest upgrades/patches/service packs.
IE6 is my default browser.  Oddly enough I also installed FIREFOX & Netscape browsers just for a test & neither can surf the net - they both say no internet connection (or can't connect to page).Lonman....  Ok , lets try this ........ D/L hijackthis and post a logfile here and perhaps  we can see whats going on .....
Get hijackthis at .... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html   save it to your desktop ...... then open it and click on run scan and save logfile ...... then copy the log into your post on CH ...... if the logs too large to fit in one post , do it in two posts .......

HJT looks good.....personal preference would say "fix" (delete) the pieces listed below, but they shouldn't be causing a problem.

Did you recently upgrade from Dialup to DSL?  Or to Cable?  Did you get a router for a home network?  Do you have a cable modem?  If so, do you have a router?  If you do, did you get a new one?  Did you change the settings?

-rockAlso, that's an out of date version of HJT.  Download 1.99.1 or something like that.  Your OS needs to be upgraded as well..... Lonman......  In order to give you a better answer , I would ask you to delete the version of hijackthis you have installed as it is outdated ....and re download the latest version from .........
 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Then post a new logfile .......
Thank you .

I figured it out.  Don't know how, why or whatever, but looking at the HiJack log I posted I noticed the ZoneLabs (Zone Alarm).  I tried to fix through HJT but it wouldn't delete.  I looked for ZoneLabs in te path it showed - it wasn't there.  I did a search on the entire computer for anything having to do with ZoneLabs/Zone Alarm, it found 3 folders.  I went to Control Panel to remove the program, it wasn't there.  I tried deleting the 3 folders - it wouldn't delete stating that those files were already deleted or removed.  So I had a phantom Firewall running in the background somehow.  I had to actually reinstall ZoneAlarm & uninstall it again.  Now everything is back up & running.

Thanks for those who responded.
