Answer» Hi, I'm trying to get a nephews Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook to operate properly. It has WINDOWS XP Professional. I know that the system has a trojan downloader virus as dectected by AVG. My problem is that I can connect to my ISP via modem dialup and it connects at 50.6 Kbps, but whenever I open IE or Firefox it will not connect with the internet. I cannot get AVG, Spybot or Adaware to connect for a update either. I have disabled windows firewall and some other antivirus programs that are on the computer. Any ideas on what's going on here. johnc... If you know the machine is infected , I would suggest REBOOTING into safe MODE and run a full virus scan from there . And if the machine has Ewido INSTALLED on it run it as well ........ If anything is found and removed .....reboot back into normal mode and see if it will connect ....... If necessary create a new connection utilizing the ISPs setup instructions ........ the nasty has PROBABLY disabled the ability to connect .
dl65 Thanks dl65. That did the trick. I was able to download ewido on my home computer, put it on a jumpdrive and then transfer to the notebook. Once installed I ran safemode and the ewido program removed the bug that was keeping me from getting on the net. Once connected was able to use Spybot, Ad-Aware and AVG to clean the computer.
Thanks, John
