Solve : Help with The Witcher, game crashed, save file is now gone....?

Answer»

I was playing The Witcher Enhanced Edition and I was in the swamp getting ready to head back to the city and I decided to save my game. As the game was saving like when it says "Saving..." the game crashed and the message pops up "The Witcher has stopped working and has to be closed" or something like that. This happened before and everything was fine because I just hopped back on and loaded my save but this time my save file was gone.

I clicked the "Load game" option on the title menu and it just says "No games available to load" or something to that effect. I then went to the game folder and looked in the saves files to see if it was truly gone but it's still there, my save from before is RIGHT there. For some reason it won't load in the game but it's there. I don't know what to do, is there anyway I can recover my save? I NEVER had autosave on because I hate how those pile up.

I really need to get this save back because I put in hours into this game and had almost beaten it, plus I was really enjoying the game. At this point I would just stop playing, I haven't the will nor energy to start all over again so please help. Ok, let's try fooling the game.

1. MOVE (not copy, MOVE) the current save game you have.
2. Start a new game. As soon as you can, save. (if naming the same is an option, use the same name as the old one)
3. Return the main menu, attempt to load this new save to VERIFY it works.
4. Exit the game completely.
3. Overwrite the new save with the old save. (keep a copy of this save in case this fails)
4. Start the game again, try to load your old save.

What this does:
If whatever record the game keeps of saved games was somehow corrupted or lost, this will hopefully create a new record, which hopefully the game will not care if it's the old file or the new one.

Anyway, let us know if it works. If not, I'll have to do some digging and see what I can find out about The Witcher saves (I don't own the game so I am shooting from the hip here). Quote from: quaxo on May 24, 2011, 10:45:03 PM

I'm willing to try this but a few things first as I'm not too computer savvy...

1.Move the save where?

2. I can do this no problem and you can save right from the get-go however it doesn't give you the option to name the save. It just saves and that's it no naming or nothing.

3.Will do

4. Will do

5. How do I overwrite it, in the game save menu or from the folder? and how would I do this? How do I save it in case it fails.

6. Will do

Thanks for the reply, Like I said I'm not too computer savvy so I need a bit more info. One MOMENT, I am downloading some The Witcher saves so I can have a look at them. Check back in a few minutes.Ok, they've got a weird naming scheme for their saves.

Here's an example of a save game I downloaded. It supposedly loads at the beginning of the game, after the prologue.
000063 - Witchers' laboratory-063.TheWitcherSave

Not quite sure what the 63 is meant to be, but it looks like it saves the location name as well (Witchers' laboratory). I keep finding resources online for downloading save games, but none of them explain what to do with them other than put them here:

C:\Users\Username\Documents\The Witcher\saves

Which I'm guessing is the location your current save is at.

What's the name of the file you currently have? Quote from: quaxo on May 27, 2011, 10:03:50 PM

What's the name of the file you currently have?

The file is called

"000020 - Swamp Forest-020" I know this is my file because I was at the swamp when I saved

That is exactly how it looks from here C:\Users\Username\Documents\The Witcher\Saves\000020 - Swamp Forest-020

When I click on the save folder (the 000020 swamp forest one) it opens up a really lengthy list of a bunch of "QST files" ALONG with some "SAV files" and a few others and I have no idea what these are. They list a bunch of the monsters I've killed and things I did prior to saving for example one says "q9039_Cmentar.qst             5/23/2011      3:37 PM           QST File         15KB"  there is long list of things like that with different monster listed that I actually remember killing before saving.

I assume the Cmentar is referring to a monster I had killed prior to saving http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Cemetaur this was my first time encountering this monster in the entire game and I remember saving shortly after (like 5-10 minutes after) so based on this I know this is my save.
