Solve : Impressed with Mint 14.1 KDE Pre-Install Live Environment? |
|
Answer» Not a request for help, but just sharing what happened with Mint 14.1 KDE DVD which is cool! I turned computer on and walked out of room to go get breakfast to bring back to PCYou know you don't have to feed your PC, right? Quote To my surprise the browser that is common to just about all preinstallation Linux discs actually had FLASH fully operational!! All others I used in the past I was able to surf the web, but the plugins were missing etc, but on this Distro the preinstall environment had all the necessary plugins.Yes. That is because Linux Mint's development and guiding principle isn't an idiotic rhetoric about free software but rather one about making their software as usable and functional as possible; A free bag of terd is still a terd, and Many Linux advocates seem to think otherwise; and they shove that bag of terd in people's faces. "This is Linux, look how great it is! Don't mind the smell, because it's FREE! TAKE IT!". The people behind mint, however, have essentially taken a different approach. Instead of trying to give away bags of terd on the general premise that they are free, they instead take the revolutionary approach of instead giving away bags of chocolate. They look the same on the surface- but they smell different, and Mint, for me, has always 'smelled better', to take the analogy to it's absurd conclusion. BTW, this has been the case for every Mint Live CD as far as I remember. They have two versions: one version that removes the stuff they aren't allowed to use because RMS says (or, perhaps ironically, dictates) that it is bad for freedomz, and another where they take the approach of giving people a useful DESKTOP environment that requires as little initial configuration as possible. Quote Now I am curious as to when they implemented this.I seem to recall it working fine since at least Mint 7. Though I had that on a USB stick and may have done some initial setup to get Flash working. Quote I turned computer on and walked out of room to go get breakfast to bring back to PC Quote BC Stated: You know you don't have to feed your PC, right? Had a good laugh at this. I guess I should proof read before I post Also the analogy stated was perfect in relation to Linux distros in comparison to each other. I try to avoid claiming that one is better than others, or more specifically stating that others are terds. I have seen men at a Linux convention get into a heated argument/discussion between Fedora and Ubuntu and they argued as if it was politics they were discussing over " Unity " which would change the course of the world vs just 2 distros that already have a healthy following and its not like they cant coexist. Personally I relate all distros to Ice Cream. I may not like all flavors. And may have a favorite flavor now. But if a new flavor becomes available, I'd try it and either accept it or reject it. Ubuntu though with Unity has made toppings manditory to their flavor, and what if you want the Ubuntu flavor without the toppings, but plain. The toppings can be removed probably, but it gives the consumer the sense that its being forced upon them, and who wants to have to take the time and extra effort to remove the toppings before consuming it, when they can just have their newest favorite flavor MINT which is perfect as dished out. If only Ice Cream was FREE!!!! Quote They have two versions: one version that removes the stuff they aren't allowed to use because RMS says (or, perhaps ironically, dictates) that it is bad for freedomz, and another where they take the approach of giving people a useful desktop environment that requires as little initial configuration as possible. This statement sparked my interest. Went on in google search for info on this RMS. http://rmsgnulinux.com.ar/about Quote I seem to recall it working fine since at least Mint 7. Though I had that on a USB stick and may have done some initial setup to get Flash working. Thanks for stating this. That saved me from burning discs of older Mint distros or having to format a thumb drive and make it a bootable linux. Thanks for sharing. For those that are new to Linux, it is FREE and it is so easy. http://www.linuxmint.com/ Just realized checking back on this that at least the statement of: Quote I turned computer on and walked out of room to go get breakfast to bring back to PCwasn't jabbed at, As in the other form of turn on...LOL Note to self: I turned on computer ... use ... I powered up the computer instead walked out of room to go get breakfast to bring back to PC ... use ... I left the room to bring my breakfast back to my desk where my PC is located. Yeah, it's been that way since I first tried it at version 8, probably before. It just works. That's why people like it so well. If you think that's cool, check this out. If you wanted to install from that CD, you could minimize the installer to the menu bar, open firefox, and watch youtube/surf the web while the installer is running. You could even play a game or run any other program(s) while waiting. Pretty cool huh? You don't have to watch those install screens or find another computer to play around on while it's installing. You can even install programs from a live cd if you want. So if you booted and older version of ubuntu and wanted to watch youtube from the live cd, you can just install it through the softare center. It's all just in system ram though, so you would have to do it each time...Quote If you think that's cool, check this out. Never tried this, but next time I am doing install, I know what I will be trying out. Thanks! |
