Not all virtual MACHINES will support Linux. Microsoft's Virtual Server doesn't, if I recall correctly. If you want, you can try out vmware player, http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
and ubuntu appliance http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/ubuntu.html.

I tried that within Windows and I had a really hard time getting the network to work. Maybe it was just my setup but I NEVER did get it to work... It is a pretty useful way of trying out a bunch of Distros without TAKING the time to burn and install them though.Quote

A Microsoft product that doesn't support another operating system? Shocking! MS Virtual PC does however.
