Answer»

Alright I have a braodband ethernet fast connection, Any time I click on IE (version 5) it says stay connect or stay offline, never lets me go anywhere.  Well I went all around lan settings and network connections for hours, but found no solution, i checked in internet options for hours, no solution.  So I'm pissed and grab my old pentium II 348 out of the attic so I can get online. (using it now) My old computer hadles the ethernet like a champ and I get online. I would like some help in finding an answer to this delima.  I need help on this one, I run windows xp home, my computer is a dell inspiron 4100 notebook.  problem encountered since I got notebook last week Quote

So , is it safe to say that your notebook has never worked correctly ?  If thats the case , why wouldnt you simply contact DELL for the solution .

My labtop does work correctly, and dell says I'm not covered by warranty ANYMORE,

Labtop always connected to networks fine, but just recently I have gotten it fixed bc power supply was broke.  After got back never connected to LAN again as my desktop does fine.

I am convinced that someone with a little computer knowledge could help me with this problem

thank youIf you open IE and go to the dropdown 'file' menu you should see an entry for 'work offline', untick it.
It works for me.
BTW, IE5? It's update time.no that does not work.  I don't get the sign of connect popping  up anymore, just a page that says

page cannot be displayed, cannot FIND server, I have a broadband connection that works fine on my desktop machine,

thank youSince you are on a LAN, are you actually connected? Try to ping the desktop from the notebook, both by IP address and by name. If that fails, I would run the Network Setup Wizard (in Control Panel) again to reset the settings.

If the problem is with IE, you may need to repair it:

  1. Go to the Control Panel
  2. Open up Add/Remove Programs
  3. Select Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools
  4. Click the Add/Remove button
  5. Check Repair Internet Explorer
  6. Click on the OK button

If the Repair works, run your antispyware and antivirus programs. Also once you get online, seriously think about updating IE to IE6 SP2 plus any hotfixes you find in Windows Update.

Hope this helps.  i didn't see IE inthe add remove programs program, also the ping in commmand is getting a renewed or released ip address, furthermore, i click on repair in my lan properties, and a message comes up after about a minute that says

ip address cannot be renewed contact isp or admin.

i have one of the 169.254 ip's which from other tech sites seem to cause people a lot of problems.

How would I fix this problem,

thank youThe 169. addresses indicate that your computer cannot connect to the DHCP server on your router or broadband modem.  It is not getting an address and therefore cannot COMMUNICATE with the Internet.

Try downloading winsockxpfix from http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm and running it on your computer.  It will fit on a floppy.
