Solve : links won't connect?

Answer»

I can surf the internet and go from page to page. When I click on a link that attempts to open a new page I have a problem. After clicking a link that would open a new page the computer locks up for approx. 60 seconds. Mouse and keyboard do not respond. After the 60 seconds the computer will work again but the link you are trying to open never does. How can I fix this?
Any help would be appreciated. ThanksYou may wish to try the following:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Security tab
6. Reset all security zones to Default

And/or

1. Start

I have already reset to default settings like you suggested.
I have also run
Norton systemworks
Norton Anit-virus
Yahoo Anti-spy
CCleaner
Spybot
Spyware doctor
I do have ZoneAlarm installed as well

My system is running on WIN98SEcheck your firewall settings......norton!Ok, well I checked and changed some of my firewall settings, but nothing changed.
Next I just turned the zone alarm off completely but that did not fix the problem either.
Use an alternate browser such as Mozilla FirefoxType this in the run box rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

and chose the repair option!Wanted to keep Raptor and merlin_2 who have been helping me updated.

Raptor I have not tried the alternate browsrer thing yet. I was hoping to figure out what went wrong with this one.

merlin_2 I tried the option you gave me, found the repair box and let it run. Results, nothing new, still does not work.

I'm starting to feel desperate to fix it. Is it to early to reinstall windows and just wipe everything BACK to the beginning?Quote

Considering the fact that you did not yet give Mozilla Firefox a try, yes.Raptor
I got some time today so I tried the Firefox that you recommended.
Happy to report that my internet works exactally like it did before and pages even seem to be loading a little quicker.
I guess the problem is in the Internet Explorer program somewhere.
So now the question is what do I do with IE if I'm not going to us it. Should I just leave it in the program files?
There is no way to remove Internet Explorer from the computer. You will need it for Windows updates. Your best bet will be to continue using the computer and turn on automatic updates if you can not manually update. Perhaps Internet Explorer will start to work again out of the blue. However, by that time you'll swear by Firefox..

I heavily recommend that you look into installing additional extensions for Firefox (Tools -> Extensions -> Get more extensions) to enhance your browsing experience.

Also Go to Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Cookies -> Ask me when to set a COOKIE for superior cookie control. No tracking cookie is going to come through! If you haven't already done it, use the HiJackThis link that Raptor put up and get your log analysed.
The problem still remains.
