Solve : Linux GPU Driver's - Any suggestions?

Answer»

Hello I am trying to play games on Linux thru Wine and I can get the games to run, BUT for the lack of correct GPU drivers I am getting poor quality. Even though these video CARDS are not top of the line I tried a GeForce 8400GS with 512MB DDR3 as well as a AMD ATI Radeon 5450 HD with 1GB of DDR3 and am getting poor frame RATES because the drivers are not tapping into the full capabilities of the video cards.

By comparison this same hardware a Pentium E5400 with 4GB DDR2 and these video cards running Windows 7 on a different hard drive gave me 30 fps on the GeForce 8400 GS and 60 fps on the ATI Radeon 5450 HD, on the same games between both Windows and Linux.

On Linux I am getting 6 fps with the GeForce card and 10 fps on the ATI Radeon card.

Hunting google I saw lots of people in the same boat, but not much information out there for drivers to use etc. Lots of people suggested using ATI instead of Nvidia because Nvidia has no Linux drivers available. I tried the Linux driver that ATI had available and under Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon 64-bit it  didnt change anything, then tried Mint 13 32-bit and still same results. Should I be trying a different build such as Ubuntu etc or is there a better driver available for either Nvidia or ATI that is out there that I have not found YET?

Long time ago I wrapped a DOS network driver to work under Linux... do I need to wrap a windows GPU driver for Linux and if so, what tool to use to accomplish this?

I know that I probably should just stick with Windows when it COMES to gaming, but it would be really neat if I could get this to work correctly. You cannot wrap GPU drivers.

I would suspect you aren't getting any OpenGL support from the drivers, in which case (unlike windows) Linux defaults to MESA, which is software emulation.

Unless you are running DX games, in which case it's probably the software layer. Quote

That's nonsense. I have an nvidia video card and am using the proprietary video driver.

The easy way to install drivers in Linux Mint:

Click Menu > Control Center > Hardware > Additional Drivers. It will search for available drivers and give you options to install or activate them.

Or if you want to go to Nvidia's website to download the driver for your GeForce 8400 GS, you can get it there too.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-295.59-driver.html
or
http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/44867

Those are the 32 bit drivers. If you have a 64 bit OS get

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-295.59-driver.html
or
http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/44868

It's BEST to just install them from the control center.
