Solve : Old game: hostile waters problem with removal?

Answer»

Running WinXP sp3. I think the issue doesn't necessarily have to do with just this game, but here is what I was doing.

I got bored of the games I've been playing and felt like playing an old one. Enter hostile waters. Different sort of game, thought it would be fun. FIGURE it's old I should get any patches. I get V1.01 and V1.02 from gamespot. Load the game and install patches. Get an error that I have the wrong CD in which is not true. Uninstall everything again and restart. Reinstall game and try it without the patches, it works. So figure one of the patches is for the UK version. Uninstall the game then restart, reinstall and install patch v1.01 only, then try the game. Same problem with CD error. This time I say forget the patches, they don't change the game much anyway and again uninstall, restart, install......... Then for some reason the game hangs up on me while installing. I may have been able to wait it out but it was TAKING more time than I wanted after what I had already gone through. I hit cancel on install and it still hangs there and then "my computer" window is not responding, nor does ctrl+alt+del work. Well it could have but after about 45 seconds I got tired and just hit the reboot button on the computer. Now my computer is lagging a bit on startup but does eventually work fine. But I figure something got a bit messed up because of the setup still running when i shut down. The game is showing a shortcut on the desktop and start menu group and FILES in the directory. I try to uninstall from the game's start menu group uninstall tab. Says it worked, but still see everything. I put the CD back in and the autorun brings up the splash screen and has the option to "play game" highlighted, which shouldn't be there. I hit the modify install and the splash screen comes up then asks with the standard windows installer "Repair, Modify, or Uninstall." I try all of them. They all say they work, but even after restart the same screen shows up when I try to do a fresh install of the game: that standard windows "repair, modify, uninstall," and not the install that should come up for the game. I try going into the drive location and delete all the files locally, put the game disc in and it still is finding something that says the game is installed. I try the add/remove programs tab and it shows a small "hostile waters" and change/remove. I hit remove and says it did it, but it still shows the game on the list. I tried going into "regedit" and found a couple regs for the game and deleted them. I don't think there are more, but I am not too familiar with the registry and don't want to screw things up. I know just enough to be dangerous. I went back to add/remove and it's still there even if I try to remove again. Gave the computer a fresh restart and it still shows the game there on the list. Now I don't know what else I can do. Am I missing something in the registry that isn't cleared out or is there a way to get it off the add/remove list? Or some other step? Thanks to anyone who can help.

I ALSO just did a SEARCH here about removing programs from the add/remove list and I looked at article CH000568.

I checked the registry again but there was no clear key for the game. I also got tweakUI, but either I can't find the "add/remove" tab or the article hasn't been updated for new versions of TweakUi, because I can't find a way to remove it using Tweak.
