I am going to go online with a linux OS and want to add some kind of virus and spyware protection. Can anyone offer some suggestions.

Currently USING SuSe Linux and feel very safe as a RESULT of the structure of SuSe Linux.
Most Linux's are safer online as a result of the file structure and if you recognize that you will be using your Linux as a User and not an Administrator this prevents any intrusion or damage to system files ..Again..If you set up 2 or more User's you will be able to switch to another User if any of your files become damaged allowing you to remove the user with damaged files.

Beginning on line with Linux is important to First update from the server of the distributor. (Your Linux Version)...This is where you will download security updates for protection.

However; There are anti Virus SOFTWARE that you can get for free from www.sourceforge.com, or Google "Linux ANTIVIRUS software" from other locations.

Another TIP is to go to your Distributor's web site and look for questions and answers in their forum.

"Clamav" and "Antivir" are popular antivirus for Linux
