Solve : Raid under Linux Ubuntu?

Answer»

I was thinking of installing a server VARIANT of Linux Ubuntu on a PC with the following specifications:

AMD Sempron Socket 754
ASROCK K8 UPGRADE NF3 S754 (Specifications)
Q-tec 300 Watt PSU
1 Samsung SATA 150 HDD (40GB)
1 IBM UDMA IDE (40GB)

I was hoping to have these two HDD's run in RAID 1, as I trust neither of these drives and would like to experiment with that technology.

I see that the mainboard is "Connector - 2 x SerialATA 1.5Gb/s connectors (supports
RAID,0,1,JBOD)"

Does this mean I can only connect two SATA HDD's in RAID ?
Or does Linux Ubuntu allow me to run RAID 1 (Mirroring) in software mode?

I would also like to put two HDDs of the same size in RAID 0 (STRIPING); is this possible after also having RAID 1 set up?

Or perhaps I should use two SATA HDD's for storage (RAID 0 Striped) and two IDE HDD's for the OS and important files (RAID 1 Mirrored)?

The latter SEEMS the more convenient but before I buy two large SATA HDD's I think I should experiment with the SATA 150 and IDE I have lying around now.. ?

Linux will give you an option to use software RAID, and you can set up any logical partitions as members of a RAID set (provided they're the same size!) - so you can be pretty flexible with your setup.

You can make changes as you go along, although it is easiest to set everything up at the start, the way you want it. It is always painful to make changes to a server...Well, it'll be more of an experiment. When it runs stable, I want both an FTP and Teamspeak2 server but that can wait.

I'll go build the PC today and experiment with RAID.

Thanks, Rob.

Oh, where do I pick RAID? Do I set that up before or after Installing Linux?Set it up during the partitioning part of the installation process.
