Solve : Unable to open any browsers but IE?

Answer»

Hi,
Since I am new here please forgive me if this question was answered before. I need someone to help me with my laptop since it is driving me crazy. I have sony vaio laptop with Vista home premium with IE 7 or IE 8 I am not sure. My problem is that the IE is the only browser that I can use, since when I try to use Firefox or Opera or Google Chrom it says that I have no interent connection (which is bull since I am online constantly using my wireless router). My other two laptops use these browsers with no problem. ANOTHER problem is that when i try to instal any anti-virus program it again says no connection so I cannot update them or even register them, which makes them useless. This is same issue with my bittorrent. It does not connect to internet. So to summarize, I can use IE, MSN, yahoo messenger and download from hotfile, megafile sites, I cannot use any other browser, torrents, or do any av update. My other two laptops work fine. I checked all firewalls (router and laptop) and I cannot find what is wrong. I do not think it is router since other laptops work fine. So it got to be something with this laptop. Please guys/girls help me with this one. Thank you in advance. What protection apps do you have and when was the last time you updated/ran them ? ?Avira antivirus - free edition, updated yesterday. Is this what you mean? Also the standard firewall, but when I turn off either of these I still have the same issue.Just a thought, try booting your computer into safe mode with networking. See if the internet works for you on the browsers you've indicated to be nonfunctional for you.Sorry may sound stupid, but how do I boot it in a safe mode?Reboot. As soon as the system begins to boot start tapping the F8 (function) key. This will take you to the advanced boot options screen where you can choose safe mode with networking.Well, I did what you had suggested and everything worked perfectly. But when I backed up from safe mode it stopped working. So now what? BTW thank you for all your help.Backed up? I'll assume you mean when you booted to normal mode. It may be some SOFTWARE loading with the system that is interfering. Let's see.

Open msconfig and choose selective startup (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. However, if the problem continues even with the first selective startup we'll have to FIGURE out something else.Just to keep you in loop, I've openned msconfig and did what you said (disabled everything from loading), but then I did not have any internet connection. So I openned msconfig and disabled load startup items (enabled load system services) and it did not work (I had interent connection but could not use other browsers but IE). So I will try to see what is cousing the problem, but there are so many things to turn on or off and when you go to services in msconfig on some of things it says that their status is "stopped" like computer browser. No need to continue with the test if other browsers do not work with a clean boot.Well I found a problem. Doing what you told me I found that for some reason OneCare Firewall still exist on my computer even though I uninstalled it. So what I did I openned msconfig and disabled OneCare Firewall and OneCare Antispyware and antivirus nad now everything works fine. Thank you for all your help. Just one more question. How do I find folder where OneCare is so I could permanently erase it from my laptop? If it's not in ADD/REMOVE programs you can download and run Revo Uninstaller - it will find and uninstall pretty much anything:
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.htmlWell everything works fine now. Thank you for all your help. If I ever need any assistance this is the place where I will look for it. Thank you again. You're very welcome.
