I am having trouble previewing media files in windows explorer.
I am using Windows 98SE with IE 5.5
Explorer will load the files but wont actually let me play them.
It might have something to do with the media player... i dunno

Nope this has never worked before. In the side bar it comes up with a media player (like the ONES you see when playing a video in the Internet Explorer) for the files with the following extensions: wav, midi, avi, mov, mpg
go to this site to see what it looks like http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windows98/tune-300.html
it doesn't show anything in the sidebar for .wmv and other video/sound files

Currently using windows media player series 9
note: when actually opening files with windows media player they seem to play fineQuote

Is the problem that you can't preview or can't play them?

I use WIN98, and I suspect that most here don't - not anymore.
Unfortunately, I'm not big on multi-media files, and I just went and checked - my version of WMP is 6 something.
Btw, is version 9 supposed to work with Win98? I'm just wondering if perhaps that version is not meant to work with 98 at all?

From your link to MS site, it appears that some config changes can be made... I guess to ENABLE previewing from within Explorer.
I haven't tried any of that.
I found a .bmp file, and ENABLED View as Webpage, and when that file was selected, it previewed it.
I found an .avi , and it was not. Just the file details were displayed. I guess this is normal... again, I'm not big on media files.
Sorry I couldn't be more help. Since I use '98, if there is anything specific I can try, let me know.

The computer actually loads the files (i can hear the hd loadin somethin... eg. like starting up windows) and the little media player thing comes up(in the sidebar), but it just comes up with a grey/black background.
And yes I have no problems playing the files in Windows Media Player... it just doesnt preview in the explorer/sidebar.

Something else i have noticed, everytime i click to preveiw a file, the internet icon thing (top right) starts to swirl around (meaning its loading from the Internet??) ... maybe i need to be connected to the interent... i dunnoQuote

Yes WMP Series 9 was the last released media player for Windows 98.

And there is something that you could try... follow the instructions in the first link by editing the folder.htt file. (dont worry it wont crash or anything)

And then go to a folder containing mpg, avi, or mov files. Click on view > as web page. Click on one of the files and see if it shows a preview in the sidebar.Quote

After making the change, as per the MS site's instructions -

When an .avi is selected, but not double clicked:
A smaller incidence of Windows Media Player popped up.
It did not play and/or preview the .avi file.
It just sat there, with a black background and the Windows Media logo.

Try opening WMP and select File...Open and point it to the file you want...does this work ? ?Quote
