This gland produces two main hormones T3 (thyroxine) and T4 (Thyronine).The synthesis of these hormones required iodine. The formation or synthesis and release of these hormones are controlled by thyroid stimulating hormone secreated by the pituitary gland.The thyroid hormones regulate carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. It is also required for normal brain and somatic tissue development in feotus and neonates.Dificiency of iodine in our diet leads to irregular functioning of the gland.
