What are the number of solutions of linear equation 2x+4y=12?(a) One(b) Two(c) Three(d) InfiniteThis question was addressed to me in homework.My doubt is from Linear Equations Solutions topic in chapter Linear Equations in Two Variables of Mathematics – Class 9

Answer»

The correct ANSWER is (d) Infinite

Easy explanation: To find the solution, we can select arbitrary value of EITHER x or y and we will get the APPROPRIATE value of the other variable.

Suppose we take value of x=0, then we get 2(0) + 4y=12

y=12/4

Therefore, y=4

Now, for x = 1, we get 2(1) + 4y = 12

4y=12-2=10

Therefore, y = 10/4

y = 2.5

Likewise, we can get infinite solutions by taking arbitrary values of either x or y.
