What corrosion |
|
Answer» Corrosion is a natural process, which converts a refined metal to a more chemically stable form, such as its oxide, hydroxide, or sulphide. It is the gradual destruction of materials (usually metals) by chemical and/or electrochemical reaction with their environment. Corrosion degrades the useful properties of materials and structures including strength, appearance, and permeability to liquids and gases. Corrosion is one of the most common phenomena that we observe in our daily lives. You must have noticed that some objects made of iron are covered with some orange or reddish-brown coloured layer at some point in time. The formation of this layer is the result of a chemical process known as rusting, which is a form of corrosion. The process of slow conversion of metals into their undesirable compounds by the action of components of air i.e. oxygen, moisture and other gases like SO2, NO2, etc. is known as corrosion. |
