| Answer» \tThe General Council: The members of the General Council are elected on the basis of Adult Franchise by all the adult citizens that are registered voters in a particular Municipal area. These members are known as Municipal Councillors. The size of the Council varies depending on the population of the city that is determined by the State government. Seats are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and Tribes in proportion to their population and also one-third of the total number of seats are for women. Some important and respected people of the city are nominated by the Governor to be elected as Council members. The Council also appoints many other members except the Municipal Commissioner.\tThe Mayor: The Mayor is considered as the head of the Municipal Corporation. He is elected by the Aldermen and the members of the Council from among themselves. He is elected for a period of one year but can be elected again annually for the full term of the Cooperation. He is known as the ‘First Citizen’ of the town.\tStanding Committee: Through this Committee, the General Council performs its various functions. There are different Standing Committees dealing with various subjects - finance, taxation, health, education services, engineering, welfare schemes, development works, and planning for economic development, etc.\tMunicipal Commissioner: The Municipal Commissioner is the Chief Executive Officer. He is elected for a term of five years by the State or the Union Government, as the case may be. | |
