When fe react with oxygen then why fe3o4 is formed

Answer» Iron actually does not react with cold or hot water. It reacts with steam and gets oxidised to iron(II)(III)oxide i.e. FeO.Fe2O3.This is combinely written as Fe3O4. It is also named as ferrosoferric oxide.Actually no compound like Fe3O4 is formed.
