Why hydrogen gas is not evolved when a metal react with nitric acid |
|
Answer» When metals react with dilute nitric acid, hydrogen gas is not evolved because nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent. As soon as hydrogen gas is evolved, the nitric acid oxidises it to water and the acid gets reduced to nitrogen oxides. So, metals reacting with nitric acid tend to give oxides of nitrogen rather than hydrogen. But, magnesium and manganese react with nitric acid to give hydrogen gas. Nitric acid is very reactive and itself changes into nitrogen oxide |
