Answer» Mg ribbon should be cleaned before burning in air coz it is a highly reactive metal and hence, it reacts with atmospheric oxygen. This results in the formation of Mgo which prevents further reaction of the metal. Magnesium ribbon is cleaned before burning it in air this is done to remove the layer of magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate from the surface of magnesium ribbon these are formed as a result of reaction with atmospheric oxygen, it is cleaned using sand paper after which it burns smoothly We should clean ribbon before burning because in presance of oxygen theunwanted layer are covered in surfaces of magnesium Mg is very reactive metal .when exposed to air it react with o2 and form MgO 2Mg +O2 ➡2 MgO Hence we clean before burning in air.
