To remember that amazing adventure.

One day Swami’s father was sitting under the hall lamp and reading the newspaper. When Swami came to him, he read out the news of the bravery of a village lad who was returning home by the jungle path. The lad, then, came face to face with a tiger. But he was not frightened. Instead, he flew up to a tree and stayed on it for half a day. At last some people came that way and killed the tiger. Then Swami told his father that a boy could not fight a tiger. His father said that courage is everything; strength and age don’t matter much. Swami’s father told Swami to prove his courage by sleeping alone in his office room that night. Swami could not sleep alone. He always slept beside his granny in the porch. He would be trembling and awake all night if he did not sleep beside his granny. So he requested his father to let him do it from the first of next month. But his father did not agree. When Swami was sleeping by his granny as usual, his father came and woke him up. He then took him into his office room and order him to sleep on one of the benches in the room, alone. He put out the lights, but left the door open and went out. Swami was alone. He was afraid. 

Swami spread his bed under the bench and crouched there. Soon he fell asleep. He had a dream that a tiger was chasing him. Swami tried to open his eyes but failed. So he groaned in despair. 

Suddenly Swami heard a little rustling noise in the darkness. Swami was afraid that a devil was coming. But it was nothing but a thief that entered the office room as the door was kept open. The thief came very close to him. At once Swami clutched his leg and dug his teeth in.

The thief, then,, cried out that something had bitten his leg. Everyone in the house was awakened by the loud noise. Father and a servant came running with a light. Both of them caught hold of the thief. The thief was later taken a way by the police. 

The next day, Swami’s classmates praised him. His teacher patted him for his courage and bravery. The headmaster said that Swami had bitten into the knee of a notorious house ‐ breaker and the police were grateful to him.

When father returned home that night, Swami, instead of sleeping alone in the office room, was seen sleeping beside his granny. His mother stopped his father from wakening him up.

As the news spread, congratulations came showering on Swami next day. His classmates looked at him with respect now. Even his teachers acknowledged his bravery and patted his back. The headmaster praised him saying that he was a true scout. The police was grateful to him as he had bitten into the flesh of one of the most notorious burglars of the district..

खबर के फैलते ही, स्वामी को बधाइयों का ताँता लगने लगा। उनके सहपाठी अब उसे सम्मान की दृष्टि से देखने लगे। यहाँ तक कि उसके शिक्षकों ने भी उसकी प्रशंसा की तथा पीठ थपथपाई। प्रधानाध्यापक ने उसकी प्रशंसा की तथा उसे सच्चा पहरेदार बताया। पुलिस ने उसके प्रति आभार व्यक्त किया क्योंकि उसने जिले के एक कख्यात संधमार के मांस को काट खाया था।

Swami heard a rustling sound. He stared in the darkness. Something was moving down. Swami thought that his end had come. He knew that the devil would presently pull him out and tear him to pieces. He became desperate and didn’t want to wait till the devil attacked him. He came out and held it’ with all his might. He dug his teeth into the flesh. He hardly knew that he had dug his teeth not in the flesh of the devil but of a notorious burglar.

स्वामी ने एक सरसराहट की आवाज सुनी। उसने अँधेरे में आँखें फाड़कर देखा। कुछ नीचे की तरफ गिर रहा था। स्वामी ने सोचा कि उसका अंत करीब आ चुका है। शैतान उसे बाहर खींचकर टुकड़ों में काट डालेगा। वह शैतान के आक्रमण करने तक प्रतीक्षा नहीं करना चाहता था तथा वह घबराहट में उठा। वह बाहर निकला तथा पूरी शक्ति के साथ उसे पकड़ लिया। उसने अपने दाँतों को उसके मांस में गड़ा दिया। वह नहीं जानता था कि उसने अपने दाँतों को एक शैतान के नहीं बल्कि एक कुख्यात सेंधमार के मांस में गड़ाए हैं।

हिन्दी अनुवाद- स्वामी एक नौ वर्ष का लड़का है, जो अपने माता-पिता और दादी के साथ मालगुड़ी गाँव में रहता है। एक दिन उसके पिताजी अखबार पढ़ रहे थे। पिताजी : स्वामी इसे सुनो, एक खबर जिसमें बताया है इस गाँव के लड़के की बहादुरी के बारे में जिसका जंगल के रास्ते घर लौटते समय एक बाघ से सामना हुआ, फिर कुछ लोग उस रास्ते आए और बाघ को मार डाला। इसे अच्छे से पढ़ने के बाद पिताजी ने स्वामी की तरफ देखा और पूछा, “तुम इसके बारे में क्या कहते हो?” 

स्वामी : मुझे लगता है कि वह एक लड़का नहीं बल्कि एक बहुत बलशाली, वयस्क आदमी होगा । एक लड़का बाघ से कैसे लड़ सकता है? 

पिताजी : एक इंसान के पास हाथी जैसी ताकत हो सकती है और फिर भी वह कायर हो सकता है। जबकि एक दूसरे इंसान में फूस (तिनका) जितनी ताकत होने पर भी साहस हो, तो वह कुछ भी कर सकता है। स्वामी : मान लीजिए मुझमें बहुत साहस है। अगर एक बाघ मुझ पर आक्रमण करे तो मैं क्या कर सकता हूँ? 

पिताजी : ताकत की तो बात छोड़ो, क्या तुम सिद्ध कर सकते हो कि तुम साहसी हो? मैं देखना चाहता हूँ कि क्या तुम मेरे दफ्तर में आज रात अकेले सो सकते हो। (स्वामी हमेशा अपनी दादी के साथ सोता था जो उसके पिताजी को नापसंद था।) स्वामी : अगले महीने की पहली तारीख से मैं अकेला सोऊँगा, पिताजी । पिताजी : नहीं, तुम्हें यह आज ही से करना होगा।

हिन्दी अनुवाद- शाम को स्वामी अपनी दादी के पास गया और उनके कम्बल के नीचे सो गया। उसके पिताजी आए और उसे बोले : पिताजी : चलो उठो। 

दादी : तुम उसे क्यों परेशान कर रहे हो? (पिताजी ने उसका बिस्तर मोड़ दिया और अपनी बाँह के नीचे दबा लिया ।) 

पिताजी : आओ मेरे साथ। स्वामी : कृपा करके मुझे हॉल में सोने दीजिए। आपके दफ्तर में बड़ी धूल है और आपकी कानून की किताबों के पीछे. बिच्छू हो सकते हैं। 

पिताजी : नहीं, तुम्हें अँधेरे से न डरना सीखना ही होगा। यह सिर्फ आदत की बात है। तुम्हें अच्छी आदतें अपनानी चाहिए। 

जैसे ही रात गहरी हुई और घर में शांति बढ़ी, स्वामी का दिल और तेज़ी से धड़कने लगा। अपने जीवन में उसने भूतों और पिशाचों की जो भी कहानियाँ सुनी थी, वह उसे याद आ गईं। उसने अपनी आँखें भींच लीं और बेंच के नीचे अपने ऊपर कम्बल ओढ़ लिया। 

उसने दादी को महसूस करने के लिए अपना हाथ आगे बढ़ाया, जैसी उसकी आदत थी, परन्तु उसने बेंच के लकड़ी के पैर को छू लिया। डर से उसका पसीना छूट गया। स्वामी बेंच के कोने में सरक गया। उसने अंधेरे में टकटकी लगाकर देखा। नीचे कुछ चल रहा था। जैसे ही वह पास आया, उसे भूत जानकर, वह बेंच के नीचे से रेंगता बाहर आया और पूरे बल से उसका गला पकड़ लिया। उसने उसपर अपने दाँतों को हथियार की तरह प्रयोग किया। वह प्राणी दर्द से चिल्ला उठा । 

उसी क्षण उसके पिताजी, रसोइया, और एक नौकर रोशनी लेकर आए। तीनों उस सेंधमार के ऊपर जा गिरे जो फर्नीचर के बीच खून बहते टखने के साथ पड़ा था। पिताजी ने पुलिस को बुलाया। पुलिस स्वामी के आभारी हुए क्योंकि उसने एक कुख्यात चोर को पकड़ा था। अगले दिन स्कूल में, स्वामी के सहपाठियों ने उसे बधाई दी और उसकी तरफ सम्मान से देखा । प्रधानाध्यापक ने कहा कि स्वामी एक सच्चा स्काउट है। उसकी बहादुरी की कहानी मालगुड़ी टाइम्स में भी प्रकाशित हुई।

Swami’s father read about the bravery of a village boy who came face to face with a tiger, while returning home by the jungle path.

In his sleep, Swami was troubled with really bad dreams. He saw in his dream that a tiger was chasing him. He tried to run and escape. But his feet didn’t move at all in fear. The tiger was at his back. He could hear the sound of his claws scratching the ground. Then he heard a light thud sound. He tried to open his eyes but then his eye-lids would not open. The nightmare continued.

सोते हुए स्वामी ने वास्तव में कई बुरे-बुरे सपने देखे। उसने सपने में देखा कि एक बाघ उसका पीछा कर रहा है। उसने उससे बचने के लिए भागने की कोशिश की, लेकिन भयवश उसके कदम नहीं उठ पा रहे थे। बाघ उसके पीछे था। उसने अपने पंजों से जमीन को खुरचते बाघ की आवाज सुनी। उसके बाद उसने एक हल्की सी ‘धप्प’ की आवाज सुनी। उसने अपनी आँखें खोलने की कोशिश की, किंतु | उसकी पलकें नहीं खुली। दु:स्वप्न जारी था।

When Swami opened his eyes he stared in the darkness. He saw ‘something’ coming down. He knew that the devil would pull him out and tear him to pieces. He became desperate and hugged that ‘something’ with all his might. He dug his teeth into its flesh. He didn’t know that the something was not the devil but a notorious burglar. So it was not an act of courage but out of desperation.

जा स्वामी ने अपनी आँखें खोली तो वह टकटकी लगाए अंधकार को देखने लगा। उसने कुछ नीचे गिरते हुए देखा। उसने सोचा कि शैतान उसे बाहर खींच लेगा तथा टुकड़ों में काट डालेगा। वह घबरा गया तथा किसी चीज को उसने पूरी शक्ति से पकड़ लिया। उसने उसके मांस में अपने दाँत गड़ा दिए। वह नहीं जानता था कि वह चीज जिसे उसने पकड़ रखा था, कोई शैतान नहीं बल्कि एक कुख्यात सेंधमार है। अतः यह कोई साहस का कार्य नहीं बल्कि घबराहट में उठाया गया कदम था।

Swami’s mind was filled with the stories of ghosts and devils. He was frightened and his heart began to beat faster. He hurriedly got up and spread his bed under the bench and lay down there. It seemed to be a much safer place. It was more compact and reassuring.

स्वामी का दिमाग भूतों तथा शैतानों की कहानियों से भर गया था। वह भयभीत हो गया था तथा उसका दिल तेजी से धड़क रहा था। वह तेजी से उठा तथा अपने बिस्तर को बेंच के नीचे बिछाकर सो गया। यह उसे ज्यादा सुरक्षित स्थान लगता था। यह स्थान अधिक संगत तथा आश्वस्तकारी था।

The news spread all around that Swami had bitten the most notorious burglar of the district. Congratulations started poring for Swami. His friends looked at him with respect. His teachers and the head master patted him at his back. The police was grateful to him because he helped them in arresting the most notorious burglar of the district.

यह खबर चारों तरफ फैल गई कि कुख्यात सेंधमार को स्वामी ने काट खाया है। स्वामी को बधाइयाँ प्राप्त होने लगीं। उसके दोस्त उसे सम्मानजनक दृष्टिकोण से देखने लगे। उसके शिक्षकों तथा प्रधानाध्यापक ने उसकी पीठ थपथपाई। पुलिस उसके प्रति कृतज्ञ थी क्योंकि उसने जिले के एक कुख्यात सेंधमार को पकड़ने में उसकी सहायता की थी।

Amit: Will you help me revise? I am worried about the exam.

Nitin: You will be able pass to the exam if you start revising now.

Amit: Will you lend your English dictionary?

Nitin: You may or can borrow it but you can not use it for exam.

Amit: I know I must have left mine in the library.

Nitin: It could be in your desk drawer you could have left it there.

Swami had no experience of sleeping alone in darkness at night. Left alone in the office room, he felt himself cut off from humanity. Fear made him remember all the stories of devils and ghosts he had heard before. He remembered how his friend once saw a ghost in the banyan tree. He also remembered how Munisami’s father spat out blood when slapped on his cheek by the devil. Every moment he expected the devil to clutch at his throat and carry him somewhere.

रात के अंधेरे में स्वामी को अकेले सोने की आदत नहीं थी। उसने मानवीयता से खुद को अलग-थलग पाया। भय ने उसे उन भूतों तथा शैतानों की कहानियों को याद करने को बाध्य किया, जिसे उसने पूर्व में अपने जीवन में उसने देखा था। उसे स्मरण हुआ कि किस प्रकार से उसके मित्र ने बरगद के पेड़ पर एक भूत देखा था। उसने यह भी याद किया कि किस प्रकार से मुनीसामी के पिता के मुँह से खून गिरने लगा था, जब शेतान ने उन्हें थप्पड़ मारा था। हर समय उसे लगता कि शैतान उसका गला दबा रहा है। तथा उसे कहीं ले जा रहा है।

Swami fell asleep and in sleep he was raked with nightmares. He saw a tiger chasing him. He tried to run away but couldn’t do so. He was paralyzed with fear. The tiger was at his back and he could hear its claws scratching the ground. Swami tried to open his eyes but his eye-lids would not open. The nightmare continued.

स्वामी सो गया तथा इस अवस्था में उसे दु:स्वप्नों ने जकड़ लिया। उसने देखा कि एक बाघ उसका पीछा कर रहा है। उसने भागना चाहा, पर ऐसा कर नहीं पाया। वह भय से बुरी तरह से ग्रस्त था। बाघ उसके पीछे था तथा वह मैदान में उसके पंजों को खुरचने । की आवाज सुन सकता था। स्वामी ने अपनी आँखें खोलने का प्रयास किया किंतु उसकी पलकें नहीं खुलीं। दु:स्वप्न जारी थे।

Swami was scared. He expected the devil to come up and clutch at his throat at any moment. So he hurriedly got up and spread his bed under the bench and lay there silently. He felt much safer, more compact and comfortable there.

स्वामी भयभीत था। वह सोच रहा था कि किसी भी समय शैतान आएगा तथा उसके गले को दबोच लेगा। अतः वह जल्दी से उठा तथा अपने बिस्तर को बेंच के नीचे कर लिया तथा वहाँ चुपचाप लेट गया। वहाँ वह अधिक सुरक्षित तथा संतोषप्रद स्थिति में स्वयं को समझने लगा।

Now Swami realized that his father was determined to make him sleep alone in the office room.

कार्यालय-कक्ष में अकेले सोने का विचार बहुत ही डरावना था। पहले तो स्वामी ने यह सोचा था कि उसके पिता मजाक कर रहे हैं। उसने विषय को बदलने की कोशिश की। उसने घोषणा की कि वह बड़ों के क्रिकेट क्लब में इसके बाद शामिल होने जा रहा है। स्वामी के पिता इसके प्रति तटस्थ थे तथा उन्होंने कहा कि वे यह सब बाद में देखेंगे। अब स्वामी को यह आभास हुआ कि उसके पिता कार्यालय कक्ष में उसे अकेले सुलाने को दृढ़-संकल्पित हैं।
