Swami’s mother is a typical mother found in most Indian families. Mostly mothers are tender and softhearted. So is Swami’s mother. She doesn’t like Swami suffering due to the commanding attitude of her husband. She doesn’t like her husband’s idea of forcing Swami to sleep alone in the office room in complete darkness. She suggests that he can sleep in the hall. She is quite a self respecting woman. She protests when her husband indirectly stuns that his son is not being properly brought up. She asserts herself in the end and prevents her husband from waking him up as he is sleeping beside his granny. She loses her temper and says, “You let him sleep where he likes. You needn’t risk his life again.”

स्वामी की माँ अधिकांश भारतीय परिवारों में पायी जाने । वाली माँ की तरह ही है। अधिकांश माँ संवेदनशील तथा कोमल हृदय की होती हैं। वह अपने पति के आदेशात्मक दृष्टिकोण से स्वामी को कष्ट होते नहीं देखना चाहती थी। वह अपने पति के इस विचार में कि स्वामी कार्यालय-कक्ष के अंधकार भरे कमरे में अकेले सोए, पसंद नहीं करती। वह सुझाव देती है कि वह हॉल में सो सकता है। वह एक आत्म-सम्मान । वाली महिला है। वह प्रतिवाद करती है जब उसके पति यह कहते हैं कि अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से इस बात से हक्का-बक्का रह जाते हैं कि उसके पुत्र का पालन-पोषण सही तरीके से नहीं हुआ। अंत में, वह अपने आपको दृढ़ बनाती है तथा अपने पति को अपनी दादी के बगल में सोए स्वामी को जगाने से मना करती है। वह अपना आपा खो बैठती है तथा कहती है-वह जहाँ चाहता है, उसे वहाँ साने दो। तुम्हें उसके जीवन को पुन: खतरे में डालने की जरूरत नहीं है।

Swami was a chicken-hearten boy. Being left alone in the dark office room, he was gripped with fear. He remembered the stories of ghosts and devils which he had heard before in life. Every moment he expected the devil to come up and clutch at his throat or carry him away somewhere.

स्वामी एक डरपोक लड़का था। एक अंधेरे भरे कार्यालय-कक्ष में अकेले रहने से वह भय की गिरफ्त में आ गया था। उसे अपने जीवन में पूर्व में सुनी गई भूतों और शैतानों की कहानियाँ याद आने लगीं। प्रत्येक क्षण उसे ऐसा लगता जैसे शैतान उसके गले को दबोचकर कहीं ले जा रहा है।

Swami-short form of Swaminathan, is a typical school-boy who hates to go to school, fools lazy to do his homework, and plays all sorts of gimmicks to escape School. On one Monday he decided to escape from school. So he made a false complaint of a bad headache to his parents.

It is ironical that the lesson is titled ‘A Hero’. The title is appropriate but the boy Swami doesn’t deserve to be called a hero in the real sense. The author uses the title satirically. Swami’s character doesn’t have any trait of heroism. He is a chicken-hearten boy. He fears to sleep alone in darkness. He dreams of ghosts and devils. He doesn’t believe that courage is more important than strength and age. He doesn’t believe that a boy can fight a tiger. Swami is not a hero but attains a false reputation. His desperate act of biting the burglar is considered to be an act of heroism and courage by his friends, classmates and teachers. It is quite ironical that our ‘hero’ still fears sleeping alone in darkness. He still sleeps beside his granny as usual.

यह हास्यास्पद है कि इस पाठ का शीर्षक ‘एक हीरो’ है। यह शीर्षक तो उपयुक्त है किंतु स्वामी नामक लड़का वास्तविक अर्थों में हीरो कहलाने का हकदार नहीं हैं। लेखक ने इस शीर्षक का प्रयोग व्यंग्यात्मक रूप से किया है। स्वामी के चरित्र में हीरो के कोई भी गुण नहीं हैं। वह एक डरपोक लड़का है। वह अकेले में अंधेरे में रहने से डरता है। वह शैतानों तथा भूतों के सपने देखता है। वह इस बात में विश्वास नहीं रखता कि साहस, शक्ति तथा उम्र से ज्यादा महत्वपूर्ण { है। वह विश्वास नहीं करता कि एक लड़का किसी बाघ से भिड़ सकता है। वह हीरो नहीं है लेकिन वह नकली उपलब्धि प्राप्त करता है। सेंधमार को घबराकर काटने से उसके कृत्य को एक हीरो तथा साहस का काम समझा जाता है तथा उसे दोस्तों, सहपाठियों तथा शिक्षकों द्वारा हौसला प्रदान किया जाता है। यह भी बहुत ही हास्यास्पद हैं कि एक हीरो’ अभी भी अकेले अंधकार में अकेले सोने से डरता है। वह अब भी हमेशा की तरह अपनी दादी के पास सोता है।

Swami was a simple boy without any extraordinary trait in his character. He was in the second form. A boy of his age must not depend on his granny and mother so much. He is afraid of sleeping alone in darkness. His father knows his weakness. He wants to make him a fearless boy. Swami doesn’t believes in the theory that courage is the most important thing. It matters more than strength and age. Swami is frightened like a baby when he is forced to sleep in his father’s office room. His heart started beating faster. His mind is obsessed with ghost and devils. When he saw something coming down, he thought that the devil was coming to tear him to pieces. His biting the burglar was not an act of courage and bravery but of utter desperation. He remained as fearful of loneliness and darkness as he was before.

स्वामी एक सामान्य लड़का था। उसके चरित्र में कोई असाधारण विशेषता नहीं थी। वह दूसरी कक्षा में पढ़ता था। उसकी उम्र के बच्चे को अपनी माँ अथवा दादी पर अधिक निर्भर नहीं करना चाहिए। अंधेरे में अकेले सोने से वह डरता था। उसके पिता उसकी कमजोरी को जानते थे। वे उसे एक निर्भीक लड़का बनाना चाहते थे। स्वामी इस बात में विश्वास नहीं रखता था कि साहस का सिद्धांत एक सर्वाधिक महत्वपूर्ण बात है। इसका महत्व शक्ति एवं उम्र से अधिक है। स्वामी को जब उसके पिता के कार्यालय कक्ष में सोने को कहा गया तो वह बहुत ही भयभीत हो गया। उसके दिल की धड़कन बहुत ही तेज हो गई। उसका दिमाग शैतान तथा भूतों से भर गया। जब उसने किसी चीज को नीचे की तरफ गिरते हुए देखा, तो उसने सोचा कि शैतान उसे टुकड़ों में काटने के लिए बढ़ा चला आ रहा है। उसका सेंधमार को काटना साहस तथा बहादुरी भरा कार्य नहीं था बल्कि पूर्व घबराहट में उठाया गया कदम था। वह अंधेरे तथा अकेलेपन से फिर भयभीत रहने लगा, जैसे पहले रहता था।

The title of the story ‘A Hero’ is ironical as well as satirical. It is ridiculous to call a chicken-hearten Swami a hero. The digging of his teeth into the flesh of the notorious burglar was not at all an act of heroism. It was an act out of desperation. No doubt, congratulations came showering on him but he was not a ‘real’ but a fake hero.

इस कहानी का शीर्षक ‘एक हीरो’ हास्यास्पद होने के साथ-साथ व्यंग्यात्मक भी है। एक डरपोक लड़के को हीरो कहना हास्यास्पद है। कुख्यात सेंधमार के मांस में अपने दाँतों को घुसा देना हीरो का उदाहरण कतई नहीं कहा जा सकता। यह घबराहट के कारण उठाया गया कदम था। यह सही है कि उस कार्य से उसे मिलने वाली बधाइयों का ताँता लग गया, किंतु वह एक वास्तविक हीरो नहीं बल्कि एक नकली हीरो था।

Swami didn’t believe in the story that was reported in the newspaper. Nor did he believe that a boy could have given such a glorious fight against a tiger. He doubted if a boy of his age could ever fight with a tiger. He must have been a very strong and grown up person, not at all a boy.

समाचार-पत्र में छपी खबर पर स्वामी को विश्वास नहीं हुआ। उसे इस बात पर कतई विश्वास नहीं हुआ कि कोई लड़का एक बाघ से इस प्रकार का शानदार संघर्ष कर सकता है। वह इस बात से आश्वस्त नहीं था कि उसकी उम्र का कोई लड़का कभी भी एक बाघ से लड़ सकता है। उसे एक बड़ा और शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति होना चाहिए, एक लड़का बिलकुल नहीं।

Swami’s father wanted Swami to listen to the story of the village boy who fought with a tiger. He wanted to teach him a lesson. Even a young boy could face a tiger if he had courage in him. Courage is more important than strength and age. Swami was not amused. He couldn’t believe that a boy of his age, whatever courage he had, could fight a tiger.

स्वामी के पिता उसे बाघ से लड़ने वाले एक ग्रामीण लड़के की कहानी सुनाना चाहते थे। उसे वह एक शिक्षा देना चाहते थे। एक युवा लड़का भी, यदि उसमें साहस है, तो बाघ से लड़ सकता है। साहस का महत्व उम्र और शक्ति से अधिक है। स्वामी इससे प्रसन्न | नहीं हुआ। वह इस बात पर विश्वास नहीं कर पा रहा था कि चाहे कितना भी साहस हो, उसकी उम्र का कोई लड़का एक बाघ से लड़ सकता है।

wami was looks looking for an opportunity. His father lifted the newspaper to his face. Swami got the opportunity he was looking for. He rose silently and tiptoed away to his bed. He went there where he used to sleep beside his granny every night in the passage.

स्वामी अवसर की तलाश में था। उसके पिता ने समाचार-पत्र उसकी तरफ बढ़ाया। स्वामी जिस अवसर की तलाश कर रहा था वह उसे प्राप्त हो गया। वह चुपके से पंजों के बल उठा तथा वहाँ से चला गया, जहाँ वह रात में अपनी दादी के पास सोया करता था।

Swami rose silently and tiptoed away to his bed to sleep beside his granny. He pulled the blanket over his face. He didn’t want to be noticed there by his father. He whispered and requested his granny not to talk to him. She must not let anyone him even if the house was on fire. He pretended that he was feeling very sleepy. He would perhaps die if he didn’t sleep at once.

स्वामी चुपके से उठा तथा पंजों के बल रेंगता हुआ अपनी दादी के पास सोने के लिए चला गया। उसने अपने चेहरे को कंबल से ढक लिया। वह अपने पिता की नजर से बचना चाहता था। उसने फुफुदाकर अपनी दादी से कहा कि उससे बात न करे। उसे कोई न बुलाए, चाहे घर में आग ही क्यों न लग जाए। उसने अपने आप को ऐसे प्रस्तुत किया जैसे वह बहुत ही सोने की इच्छा रखता है। यदि वह अभी नहीं सोएगा, तो जैसे मर जाएगा।

Father wanted Swami to sleep atone in the office-room to prove courage is everything. According to Swami, age and strength was more important in adventurous tasks. But in Swami’s father’s view, the strength and age were not so important, courage is all. To prove Swami had also courage, he should sleep alone in the office-room.

Swami’s granny and his mother were after all tender hearten women. They had a soft corner for him. They knew that Swami feared to sleep alone in darkness. He used to sleep beside his granny every night. When his father pulled out Swami’s blanket, his granny pleaded not to disturb his sleep. Swami’s mother also requested her husband to let him sleep in the hall instead of the dark office room. Swami’s father didn’t listen to their pleadings. Swami was made to sleep all alone in the office room. However, his mother and granny did win in the end. When Swami’s father protested against his sleeping with his granny again, his mother lost her temper. She told her husband frankly that he couldn’t risk his life again. He must be allowed to sleep where he liked.

स्वामी की दादी तथा माँ कोमल स्वभाव की थीं। उनके दिल में स्वामी के प्रति स्नेह था। वे जानती थीं कि स्वामी को अंधेरे में अकेले सोने में डर लगता है। वह प्रत्येक दिन रात में अपनी दादी के बगल में सोता था। जब उसके पिता ने उसके कंबल को छीना उसकी दादी ने उससे अनुरोध किया कि स्वामी को तंग न करे। स्वामी की माँ ने भी अपने पति से अनुरोध किया कि वे कार्यालय कक्ष के बजाय हॉल में सोने दें। लेकिन स्वामी के पिता ने उनके आग्रह को ठुकरा दिया। स्वामी को अकेले कार्यालय कक्ष में सोना पड़ा। तथापि, अंत में स्वामी भी माँ तथा उसकी दादी की जीत हुई। जब स्वामी को दुबारा अपनी दादी के पास सोता देखकर उसके पिता ने विरोध जतलाया, तो उसकी माँ ने अपना आपा खो दिया। उसने अपने पति से स्पष्ट रूप से कहा कि वह उसके जीवन के साथ दुबारा खिलवाड़ नहीं कर सकते। उसे जहाँ चाहे, सोने की अनुमति देनी चाहिए।

Swami was considered to be a hero and a courageous boy. Actually, he was not so. He dug his teeth into the flesh of a burglar only out of desperation. He remained what ever he was before the incident. Swami’s sleeping beside his granny shows that he was still afraid of sleeping alone like a baby.

स्वामी को एक हीरो तथा साहसी लड़के के रूप में जाना जाता था। लेकिन वास्तव में वह ऐसा नहीं था। उसने सेंधमार के मांस में अपने दाँतों को केवल भय के कारण गड़ाया था। वह फिर पहले जैसी स्थिति में ही चला गया। अपनी दादी के बगल में स्वामी का सोना यह प्रदर्शित करता है कि वह अब भी एक शिशु की तरह अकेले सोने से डरता था।
