Question : What is the contribution of Mendel to genetics? |
Answer» Solution :Mendel OBSERVED the OCCURRENCE of contrasting characters of GARDEN PEA in various generations. On this basis, he interpreted that these contrasting characters are controlled by factors. He considered each and EVERY character as a unit, which is controlled by a .factor.. Factors are carriers of hereditary information. Now, factors are known as genes.

Question : What is speciation? List four factors that could lead to speciation. Which of these cannot be a major factor in the speciation of a self-pollinating plant species? Explain. Give reason to justify your answer. |

Question : What is speciation List four factors responsible for speciation. |
Answer» SOLUTION :Speciation is the formation of new SPECIES from the pre-existing population . Factors responsible for speciation: (i) Genetic drift (ii) Natural selection (III) Geographical ISOLATION(iv) Mutation |
|
434. |
Question : What is speciation ? Explain how speciation occurs. |
Answer» Solution :The bushes on which beetles feed are widely spread over a mountain range and over a period of time beetles population becomes very large. In the large beetle population, individual beetles normally do not travel FAR. Instead they continue to feed on few nearby bushes only throughout their life-time. In the large beetle population, there will be sub-populations in neighbourhoods. Most reproduction will be within these sub-populations. Occasionally adventurous beetle might go from one sub-population to another or a beetle is picked up by a crow from one SITE and dropped in the other site, without being eaten. In either case, the migrant beetle gets an opportunity to breed with the local member of sub-population. As a result, genes of migrant beetle enter into the local sub-population. Such kind of gene flow happens between sub-populations that are only partly separated. If a large river separates two sub-populations of a beetle then there will be further isolation, resulting in minimum level of gene flow between them. (2) Genetic drift and NATURAL selection : Genetic drift will accumulate different changes in each sub-population over generations. Natural selection may also operate differently in different geographic locations. For example, in the territory of one sub- population crows are eliminated by eagles. As a result, the green variation in beetles will not be selected, the RED beetles continued to reproduce. But in other sub-population, crow numbers are very high and not eliminated by eagles. So, here green variation will be strongly selected. Together, the process of genetic drift and natural selection will result in these two isolated sub-populations of beetles becoming more and more different from each other. (3) Reproductive isolation : Members of two groups will be incapable of reproducing with each other even if they happen to meet. This can be happen by a number of ways. `rarr` SEVERE changes in DNA or change in the number of chromosomes, eventually the germ cells of two groups cannot fuse with each other. `rarr` e.g., A new variation emerges in which green females will not mate with red males of beetles. If a green female beetle meets a red male from the other group, her behaviour will ensure that there is no breeding between them. This is how speciation occurs and effectively, new species of beetles are generated. |
|
435. |
Question : What is speciation? Explain in brief the role of natural selection and genetic drift in this process. |
Answer» Solution :Speciation : Origin of new species from pre- existing ones. Role of Genetic drift and natural selection : Genetic drift is FLOW of genes from ONE POPULATION to another by CHANCE factor or randomly. Over generation it will accumulate different changes in different population. In addition, natural selection operates differently in different population selecting the fittest/ favourable FEATURE in both the population. Over a long period of time the differences in the two population may become so drastic that they no longer reproduce with each other and thus give rise to new species. |

441. |
Question : What is sickle cell anaemia? |
Answer» Solution :Sickle CELL anaemia is caused by the mutation of a single gene. This ALTERATION in gene brings a change in the structure of PROTEIN part of Haemoglobin molecule. The red blood cells, that carries the haemoglobin in sickle SHAPED and oxygen carrying capacity reduces, CAUSING sickle cell anaemia.

443. |
Question : What is sex determination? State the different methods of sex determination in animals. |
Answer» Solution :The unisexual organism is either a male or a female. The mechanism by which the sex of an individual is determined is called sex determination. The organism that develops from the fertilised EGG (zygote) may be a male or a female offspring. Methods of sex determination in animals : Different species of animals utilize different methods for their sex determination. e.g., ( 1) In a few reptiles, the sex determination is DEPENDENT on the environmental factor, i.e., temperature. The egg (zygote) may develop into a male turtle or a female turtle, is determined by temperature. When a temperature is over `30^(@)C`, the eggs of turtle, develop into female. The eggs of crocodiles EXPOSED to the high temperature INDUCE the development of male whereas the lower temperature induces the development of female crocodiles. ( 2 ) In human beings the sex of the individual is determined by sex chromosomes and is thus genetically determined. The genes inherited from parents decide the sex of the offspring. Exception : The animal such as certain snail can change its sex. The sex therein, is not genetically determined. |
|
444. |
Question :What is self sterility mechanism in flowers which allows only cross-pollination? |
Answer» Solution :In SELF STERILITY, pollen grains of the same flower are not capable to FERTILISE that flower, e.g., potato, TOBACCO, tea, etc. Hence, cross-pollination is the rule applied.
