Solve : Please help me switch from Ubuntu to Windows Vista? |
Answer» Can someone walk me through the process of reinstalling Vista? I am not trying to dual boot or anything. I just want to get it back. I have all of the necessary drivers and the OS disk. I am stuck at the part where I need to choose which partition or hard DRIVE I want to download the OS to. When I try to pick one, it says I need drivers, and when I TRIED to download them off the driver disk which was included when I bought my computer, it just was not working. Someone PLEASE help me. I am fairly knowledgeable with computers, but this is just frustrating me. THANKS in advance for you assistance. |

Solve : Ubuntu/Windows 7 Boot Loading Problem (GRUB)? |
Answer» Firstly, I hope this is posted in the right place. I shrunk the C: partition down to about 66 GB and created two new partitions, each about 30 GB; one for Ubuntu, the other for globally accessible general storage. That was all fine. I set up Ubuntu and got it running. However, yesterday I did some disk management and *accidently* deleted the Ubuntu partition and the globally accessible partition.Seems like you deleted both the Windows partition and the Ubuntu partition if the space where they were located is now ~60 GB of free space. Otherwise, you would not have ~60 GB of free space. If I'm correct, then you're actually going to have to rebuild your entire system, starting with the installation of Windows and then the installation of whatever Linux OS you want to install. I hope you had your important files backed up on some external media. No, I have a 60GB partition for Windows. I deleted both my 30GB Ubuntu partition, and another 30GB partition that was used for general storage. As I said, I can still access my Windows partition from /media/OS, I just can't boot into it.I believe you need to follow the procedure for restore the Master Boot Record, found at http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-safely-uninstall-ubuntu-in-windows-dual-boot-environment/.I had actually tried something like that earlier on with a Win7 disk. However, it turns out it was just a Win7 upgrade disk, so therefore didn't work as a full OS disk. Luckily, I had a Vista CD so I booted from that, repaired the MBR, and sure enough it boots in Windows now. I created a 20GB partition, but for some reason I can't do anything larger than that, or extend it, even though I have 40GB of free space left. As well, the Kubuntu installer is still stuck at "Scanning Disks... 47%", which leads me to believe I have corrupted some part of the HDD. Is there anyway to fix this? EDIT: I guess for now I'll just go install it under Windows with Wubi. How large is your hard drive? Exactly how is it partitioned now? Can you post a screen print of your disk management console? Quote I guess for now I'll just go install it under Windows with Wubi.Yes, you could do that or you could install the Linux OS as a "virtual machine (VM)" using VM software such as VMware Player or virtualbox. I currently have VMware Player installed on my Win 7 system and have Ubuntu 10.04 installed inside VMware Player as a VM. It's a way to have both OS running at the same time. And I've been having trouble with the Wubi installer (it keeps trying to download the AMD 64 version, even though all I want to do is install the version I already have), so I might try using some kind of VM for it, as you've suggested.Quote ... it keeps trying to download the AMD 64 version ...Do you mean the 64 bit version? Is your Windows 7 a 64 bit system? No, I have a 32bit version. What I mean is it is trying to download the x64 architecture version, and I don't know why, so I just canceled the installation. But, your hardware is 64 bit capable, right? I suspect that's why the Wubi installer wants to download the 64 bit version. According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide, you can force Wubi to download and install a 32 bit version of Ubuntu. See the link for more info.Ahh, thanks, I probably should have looked at the Wubi guide before hand. I still think I'll check out a VM, and do you know what could be causing the HDD problems when I try to install Kubuntu? Quote ... do you know what could be causing the HDD problems when I try to install Kubuntu?I'm not sure. I see some of the partitions have no letter assigned to them; I don't know whether that has anything to do with this. Since you said Windows would not let you MAKE certain changes to your hard drive, I suggest you download EASEUS Partition Master and delete and combine some of those partitions. You really don't need all those partitions, do you? If you do ultimately install a Linux OS in a dual-boot configuration, Ubuntu or Kubuntu will create a small SWAP partition. Your previous attempts to install Linux may explain why you have the two small partitions. Alright, I'll check that program out, though for now I think I'll stick with the VM, as it seems to be a good alternative to doing a semi-permanent dual boot. Thanks for your help! You should create partitions from the unallocated space, delete/combine the partitions without a drive letter, Reformat them run chkdsk on all the partitions, and then defrag on all the partitions it may take a while but you should see some improvement from doing this, also when using ubuntu/kubuntu from the wubi installer and installing inside windows , the windows boot menu removes ubuntu after you log back into windows, to fix this you can use bcdedit from the command line, I had this problem from using the wubi installer and use a multi boot windows 7 professional x64 windows 7 ultimate x64 and kubuntu, and its much easyer to fix from the command line as opposed to having to install it from a kubuntu boot disk. |

Solve : how to manually get ubuntu 10.04 online? |
Answer» I have been using dual boot since ubuntu 6.04, and everything has worked fine... but I removed WIN XP when I installed ubuntu 10.04 and now I cannot seem to get that online. Everything is the same, except for the os. Well, suffice to say, getting the card (see link in my previous post) and installing it in your computer would probably solve your problem. Since you apparently have no experience doing such hardware upgrades, perhaps you should have a computer repair shop install it.Or if you feel brave you could try it yourself carefully and gain the experience. A network card is almost one of the easiest things you can REPLACE. You don't even need to buy one if you want to save money, it is easy to find them at places like garage sales, reuse center, thrift stores etc. |

Solve : Ubuntu replacing win 98? |
Answer» I'm am SICK and tired of win. Can anyone tell me what version of Lynux ubuntu can work on this computer? I'm am sick and tired of win. Can anyone tell me what version of Lynux ubuntu can work on this computer? No version of Ubuntu will work very well with that config. You COULD try DamnSmallLinux or VectorLinux which work better with low spec computers. And of course you could run slackware and never install a DESKTOP environment.Quote from: comda on March 29, 2010, 03:28:08 PM I'm am sick and tired of win. Can anyone tell me what version of Lynux ubuntu can work on this computer? you can head down to the old archives of redhat and install those versions like 5.2, 5.1 etcTry this ONE: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/, I believe it MAY be a better choice than Lubuntu. now how do i instal it? there is no exe file?I suggest you download the .iso file from http://www.icewalkers.com/download/*censored*-Small-Linux/2005/dls/. Again, it's an .iso file, not an .exe file. Once downloaded, you burn it to CD or DVD, which creates a bootable CD/DVD from which you can install it. If you need burning software (not all burning software works well for creating a bootable disk), I recommend ImgBurnit says the page doesn't exist/ Try starting at http://www.icewalkers.com/Linux/Software/520050/*censored*-Small-Linux.html and click on the link next to Download [ 4.4.10 ] :thnx and then ust burn to disk? will it install on my hdd for it said bootable cd?and was a file called Knoppix sopost to download? Solve : Good bye Linux? |
Answer» I've tried all i possibly can with Ubuntu, Mint, Slax, and Fedora. it is not for everyone.I've had dual and tri boot set ups. I've tried them in the VM Player, I've ran them as a live CD from a CD and from a USB drive. If you understand XP or Vista and you have no problems with either one of the two, stick with what you know and more important than that, what works. WINDOWS works completely. There are too many THINGS missing in Linux and too many things that don't work. I know it is free, but still, my GOSH, how much grief can a man TAKE before it is time to give up? I tried for about six months. Like I said before, it is not for everyone. Good Luck all future Linux Distro users and God Speed.Quote from: kiddo1972 on February 21, 2010, 04:49:21 PM Windows works completely. Ok that's just plain silly. It works for you. and Linux doesn't- alright. For a lot of people, Macs work for them, and Windows doesn't. For a lot of people Linux works for them, and windows doesn't. A RACE has more then one competitor, and there is never a clear winner. What kiddo1972 said was his personal observation. And it is a valid correct observation from his perspective. He is OK with Windows and he really did try Linux. As for me, I spent a lot of time with Linux about 12 years ago and really did try. But after awhile I went back to using Windows for my day to day use. Still there are a few things I do in Linux that are more difficult in Windows. When I need to check out a failing PC, it is easier to pop in a Linux distro and see what happens. My favorite now is Puppy. http://www.puppylinux.com/ |

Solve : Looking for a good PORTABLE distro? |
Answer» Hey guys, I'm looking for a small, but easy to use (for a person who normally uses Win XP), linux distro. I have a 1.85 GB flashdrive that I just formatted and I've always wanted to try Linux. Linux Mint would be my reccomendation.Ok, so how would I attach that to my flash drive? It also would be nice if it could be in a virtual machine, but LinuxLive has never WORKED in my tests (boot medium error with JVM java virtual machine), and Universal USB Installer from pendrivelinux.com says the flash drive won't be bootable, so I don't know how it will work.http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-linux-mint-install-from-windows/Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 21, 2010, 06:11:57 PM http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-linux-mint-install-from-windows/Linux Mint iso link was dead, so I found the newer version, but I will report back in ~2 hours.Quote from: Helpmeh on February 21, 2010, 06:19:52 PM Linux Mint iso link was dead, so I found the newer version, but I will report back in ~2 hours. OK, I know I used the same portable-installer thing to install a later version of the ISO, and it works.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 21, 2010, 06:36:14 PM OK, I know I used the same portable-installer thing to install a later version of the ISO, and it works. Is there anyway to have it in a virtual machine? I haven't had much experience so, if POSSIBLE, can you give me step by step instructions?Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 21, 2010, 06:36:14 PM OK, I know I used the same portable-installer thing to install a later version of the ISO, and it works.I got at least 3 data errors...and it failed to read the boot sector, causing it to fail again. EDIT: I am not trying again, except this time I will not attempt to see why it appeared to have frozen on EXTRACTING casper\filesystem.squashfs Which by the way, was the first data error. The other 2 data errors OCCURRED directly afterwords. I retried...same errors.Anyone? There are others... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions I have used DSL, Knoppix and Puppy. Pulpy has easy instructions to put it on a USB. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 01, 2010, 04:59:41 PM There are others...It says I need burn it to a CD, AND THEN add it to a USB...is there any way to jump that step? I do have burning software, just not a cd.Yes, you can install it without a CD! Here is one solution: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNetbootin That, of course explains what can be done for many distros. Here are two more links you should see. http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/files/ http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1242550/how_to_install_puppy_linux_onto_a_usb.html Ok...I've tried using LinuxLive (or LiveLinux, I can't remember) and Pendrivelinux's installer and neither work. LinuxLive screws up the virtual box and Pendrive hasn't been able to make the drive bootable...I will try unetbootin soon.It works! Well, it at least installed fine.. I'm just feeling apprehensive about changing the bios settings, and in fact, I doubt it will even stay changed. Deepfreeze can be a real pain in the you-know-where sometimes... Is there a way I can use it in an emulator, SIMILAR to JVM (except for some reason, that didn't work)?Quote from: Helpmeh on March 02, 2010, 04:33:54 PM It works! Well, it at least installed fine.. I'm just feeling apprehensive about changing the bios settings, and in fact, I doubt it will even stay changed. Deepfreeze can be a real pain in the you-know-where sometimes... The JVM is for running Java programs.... I guess you mean Sun VirtualBox? I've never had to boot USB via emulation, but if I ever needed to, it turns out that VMWare has a feature called "ACE" whereby I could place any Virtual Machine configuration on a USB flash drive and run it anywhere. Not sure if that feature is in any other VM programs. |

Answer» i/m running 9.10 with FF browser&have all my bookmarks ect.... the WAY i want UPDATE MANAGER has 10.4 ready to install if i do will i lose everthing &have to start all over as its taken me 6 MONTHS to set 9.10 the way it is i/m happy with it change or sit pretty? You should be able to do the upgrade via Update Manager and not "lose everything". Still, be sure the backup your important files before proceeding with this. Here's article which is a good reference: http://www.ghacks.net/2010/04/28/upgrading-from-ubuntu-9-10-to-10-4/It should leave everything intact that is important (like installed programs, bookmarks, files etc). But just like soybean I recommend up anything the is irreplaceable. this may be a old post but it does pretty much leave everything as it was. |

Solve : Linux computer build.? |
Answer» I am looking to build a Linux computer. I need to know what video card to use. I have an EVGA 8400 card that I have tried to use and have had problems with it on Linux. It works fine with Windows. I loaded the drivers that Linux Mint OFFERED and they didn't work very good. Playing a DVD it would hang and stutter. It worked fine with the on board video. Then I tried to PLAY Super Gamer. I was told by on disk that it wouldn't play because I needed a better video card. It wouldn't even load or INSTALL. It is a live DVD. Then the other thing is the mother board. I planed to use a DG31GL but I don't know if that will work well with Linux. I have it setting on a shelf as a back up for the wife's computer. What would be the best motherboard to use? I plan to use two gigs of ram and a dual core CPU from Intel. Any input on this build would be of help. I know that Linux Mint will run on old stuff, I just WANT to know what it will do using equipment that is new. Thank you much for your time.I believe the DG31GL should work. Solve : Launcher and taskbar problem in 11.10? |
Answer» Recently upgraded from 10.10 to 11.10 and am very happy with Unity. However, just in the last couple of days, I find my left launcher and top taskbars changing to a weird YELLOW COLOR after a few minutes of use. The buttons are basically gone, yet if I hover over them I get what looks like the ilnfo bubble. Clicking on that will brilng up what was on that button. I just have to try to REMEMBER what was written on that particular button. If I go to the very extreme RIGHT on the top bar and click I get the 'shut down' drop down. Then I get the little window asking if I want to continue and again if I click the lower right it does shut down. |

Solve : Extract data rows (Tough One)? |
Answer» Can you all help me about this one below... There is a txt file CONTAIN data. I want to extract every 2 row of data out of all the data in the txt file. $cat file.txt ... then the output ERROR : No input. (error description for account below) ERROR : AccNo=1111 ServiceID=1 ERROR : SERVICE error. (error description for account below) ERROR : AccNo=2222 ServiceID=1 ERROR : Network error. (error description for account below) ERROR : AccNo=3333 ServiceID=1 ..... (all with the same format) How can i select only the AccNo and the error desc. The output i desire is AccNo=1111 No input AccNo=2222 Service Error I cannot USE grep cause it will take all the data in the row. How can is select row I try to seperate those data like below file1.txt file2.txt AccNo=1111 No input AccNo=2222 Service Error But, how can i append those file so it can be in 1 row. AccNo=1111 No input AccNo=2222 Service Error Please assist me coz i really need help..thankssed -n 'p;n' file.txtfor the odd lines, and sed -n 'n;p' file.txtfor the even lines. I suspect you can work out the rest. Not sure of any easy way to combine the output of the 2 files, so I'd program it in awk with a couple of tr and sed tweaks to simplify the awk program. Code: [Select]cat file.txt | tr '()' '::' | sed -e 's/ServiceID=1//' | awk -F: '($3 == "error description for account below"){error = $2}($3 != "error description for account below"){print $2 error}' The tr changes the brackets to colons, so awk can use colon as a field delimeter. The sed removes the ServiceID only if its 1. You can adapt the sed command to encompass other things later. The awk program is pretty dumb by only using a unequal test, but you have the basis of the program, so I'm sure you can adapt it to properly check that the second field contains AccNo. I get the feeling that I might be doing someone's homework for them, so I'm in future I'll just refer any questions back to this forum for examples of how to grep awk sed tail and tr. I'm pretty sure there's enough here now for anyone to work out how to do most things.Quote Code: [Select]cat file.txt | tr '()' '::'above can be written Code: [Select]tr '()' '::' < file.txt Useless use of cathmm..thanks for all your replies. It really help me a lot. But, i still dont know how to append those words into a row. ERROR : No input. (error description for account below) ERROR : AccNo=1111 ServiceID=1 ERROR : Service error. (error description for account below) ERROR : AccNo=2222 ServiceID=1 the problem is, i want to append those words into a row so i can put in the database. ERROR : No input. AccNo=111 ERROR : Service error. AccNo=2222 i tried to use cat file.txt > file2.txt but it just append those word into another row. Can i put the account no in another column of a row? Or is it not possible because of the error description is not fixed and can be different for each account. So, it is not possible for me to use `cut` cmd. how can i do itQuote hmm..thanks for all your replies. It really help me a lot. Not the best solution, but possible one. Code: [Select]sed -n 'p;n' file.txt > 1 sed -n 'n;p' file.txt > 2 sed -i 's/ERROR : \(AccNo.*\) Service.*/\1/' 1 sed -i 's/ERROR : \(.*\) (error.*/\1/' 2 paste 2 1 > new.txt Quote Useless use of catWell spotted ghostdog74 Quote Code: [Select]paste 2 1 > new.txtThanks ghostdog74 for introducing me to a new command. I've been using Unix for 20 YEARS, and not come accross paste before. I still prefer awk programming in this SCENARIO, as its more flexible. I hope you don't mind me quoting this from your PM, as its something other awk novices might be interested in ... Quote Quoteawk -F: '($3 == "error description for account below"){error = $2}($3 != "error description for account below"){print $2 error}'for $3 and error ... is it a variable u declare in the awk cmd or is it referring to the column of the data. "error" is an undeclared variable which I made up, and $3 means the third field from the input file (where as I said before -F: defines colon as the field seperator). Remember in awk scripts not to prefix variable names with dollar, as you would in shell scripting. Here is an example of what would happen. Code: [Select]echo one two three four | awk 'BEGIN{fred=3}{print $fred}'This does not display "3" as you might think, but in fact displays the third field "three" instead. Finally, here's an example of a predeclared variable in awk Code: [Select]ls *.txt | awk '{print "mv " quote $0 quote " " quote $0 ".old" quote}' quote='"' | shHere the $0 means the entire line |

Solve : Browsing Question? |
Answer» Got a quick one...is BROWSING from a live CD any safer than from the system on the HD? From VIRUSES & such? Yes I have all the anti this & that but was just curious. In short, yes, probably. Your live CD is a "disposable" operating system. If you do not make USE of the hard drives for storage of data, any changes a virus may make will be lost once the computer is turned off. Plus, you're presumably using a Linux distro, and Linux is less virus-prone than Windows anyway.Yep...Zenwalk Gnu. A friend told me it might be more compatible with my old machine, & so far so good. Looks LIKE I got lots of new gadgets to learn. If I can get used to it then I may insall it o a separate HD. Thanks!Enjoy the ride! |

Solve : cannot start dt messaging system? |
Answer» i have recntly loaded aix on a server, i have added the ip ADDRESS and EVERYTHING, but when i logged out and tried to log back in, i get this message: dt MESSAGING SYSTEM cannot be started. the ip address in /etc/hosts is correct, other than that i cannot think of anything that is wrong. As far as I know, experience of AIX is fairly limited round here. I'm one of the Unix/Linux regulars, but have never had a play with AIX, sorry. There should be an option to do a command line login. Once you've logged in that way, you should be able to find the ERROR log for your last GUI login. That should give you the detail you need. |
