Solve : Please help me switch from Ubuntu to Windows Vista?

Answer»

Can someone walk me through the process of reinstalling Vista? I am not trying to dual boot or anything. I just want to get it back. I have all of the necessary drivers and the OS disk. I am stuck at the part where I need to choose which partition or hard DRIVE I want to download the OS to. When I try to pick one, it says I need drivers, and when I TRIED to download them off the driver disk which was included when I bought my computer, it just was not working. Someone PLEASE help me. I am fairly knowledgeable with computers, but this is just frustrating me. THANKS in advance for you assistance.

Solve : Ubuntu/Windows 7 Boot Loading Problem (GRUB)?

Answer»

Firstly, I hope this is posted in the right place.

Now, to my problem.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop with 3GB RAM and a 2.1 Ghz Intel Dual Core Processor. (Don't know if that might help or not). I had Windows Vista natively installed, but I had a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it came out. What I wanted to do, though, was dual boot that with Ubuntu. So, I shrunk the C: partition down to about 66 GB and created two new partitions, each about 30 GB; one for Ubuntu, the other for globally accessible general storage. That was all fine. I set up Ubuntu and got it running. However, yesterday I did some disk management and *accidently* deleted the Ubuntu partition and the globally accessible partition. (By accident I really mean: I didn't know how else to remove Ubuntu and put on Kubuntu (Now I know it was ppossible to go from Ubuntu to Kubuntu easily, but oh well). So, I deleted the partition thinking it would be fine). However, when I attempted to reboot, I got this as a recovery terminal:

Code: [Select]Error: partition not found.
Grub rescue>
Not knowing what to do, I went to my desktop and downloaded Kubuntu, which I planned on doing anyway. I have it on a USB drive created with UNetBootin. I was able to boot off of it by pressing F12 at start-up and running the USB drive. Kubuntu shows up in its demo mode. However, when I go to install it, it gets stuck on this:

Code: [Select]Scanning Disks... 47%
It won't go any further than that, right after the keyboard select. I believe this has to do something with what I did when I deleted those partitions. So, right now I can't boot into Windows to do anything, although I can ACCESS all those files through /media/OS .

I've tried running the Windows 7 INSTALLER CD again, but it gives a GRUB error and the rescue console comes up again.

Does anyone know how I can overwrite GRUB back to the Windows Boot Loader, fix my partitions, and from there re-install a clean version of Kubuntu on one of the partitions? Any help is greatly appreciated as I really need to fix my laptop, and I don't want to have to boot from a USB everytime

Thanks!

EDIT: Just as a note, those two partitions are now just ~60 GB of free space, nothing else.Quote from: The Chasm on June 05, 2010, 08:37:47 AM

Seems like you deleted both the Windows partition and the Ubuntu partition if the space where they were located is now ~60 GB of free space. Otherwise, you would not have ~60 GB of free space.

If I'm correct, then you're actually going to have to rebuild your entire system, starting with the installation of Windows and then the installation of whatever Linux OS you want to install. I hope you had your important files backed up on some external media. No, I have a 60GB partition for Windows. I deleted both my 30GB Ubuntu partition, and another 30GB partition that was used for general storage. As I said, I can still access my Windows partition from /media/OS, I just can't boot into it.I believe you need to follow the procedure for restore the Master Boot Record, found at http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-safely-uninstall-ubuntu-in-windows-dual-boot-environment/.I had actually tried something like that earlier on with a Win7 disk. However, it turns out it was just a Win7 upgrade disk, so therefore didn't work as a full OS disk. Luckily, I had a Vista CD so I booted from that, repaired the MBR, and sure enough it boots in Windows now. I created a 20GB partition, but for some reason I can't do anything larger than that, or extend it, even though I have 40GB of free space left. As well, the Kubuntu installer is still stuck at "Scanning Disks... 47%", which leads me to believe I have corrupted some part of the HDD. Is there anyway to fix this?

EDIT: I guess for now I'll just go install it under Windows with Wubi. How large is your hard drive? Exactly how is it partitioned now? Can you post a screen print of your disk management console?

Quote
I guess for now I'll just go install it under Windows with Wubi.
Yes, you could do that or you could install the Linux OS as a "virtual machine (VM)" using VM software such as VMware Player or virtualbox. I currently have VMware Player installed on my Win 7 system and have Ubuntu 10.04 installed inside VMware Player as a VM. It's a way to have both OS running at the same time.

And I've been having trouble with the Wubi installer (it keeps trying to download the AMD 64 version, even though all I want to do is install the version I already have), so I might try using some kind of VM for it, as you've suggested.Quote
... it keeps trying to download the AMD 64 version ...
Do you mean the 64 bit version? Is your Windows 7 a 64 bit system? No, I have a 32bit version. What I mean is it is trying to download the x64 architecture version, and I don't know why, so I just canceled the installation. But, your hardware is 64 bit capable, right? I suspect that's why the Wubi installer wants to download the 64 bit version. According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide, you can force Wubi to download and install a 32 bit version of Ubuntu. See the link for more info.Ahh, thanks, I probably should have looked at the Wubi guide before hand.

I still think I'll check out a VM, and do you know what could be causing the HDD problems when I try to install Kubuntu?

Quote
... do you know what could be causing the HDD problems when I try to install Kubuntu?
I'm not sure. I see some of the partitions have no letter assigned to them; I don't know whether that has anything to do with this. Since you said Windows would not let you MAKE certain changes to your hard drive, I suggest you download EASEUS Partition Master and delete and combine some of those partitions. You really don't need all those partitions, do you?

If you do ultimately install a Linux OS in a dual-boot configuration, Ubuntu or Kubuntu will create a small SWAP partition. Your previous attempts to install Linux may explain why you have the two small partitions. Alright, I'll check that program out, though for now I think I'll stick with the VM, as it seems to be a good alternative to doing a semi-permanent dual boot.

Thanks for your help!

You should create partitions from the unallocated space, delete/combine the partitions without a drive letter,
Reformat them run chkdsk on all the partitions, and then defrag on all the partitions it may take a while but you should see some improvement from doing this, also when using ubuntu/kubuntu from the wubi installer and installing inside windows , the windows boot menu removes ubuntu after you log back into windows, to fix this you can use bcdedit from the command line, I had this problem from using the wubi installer and use a multi boot windows 7 professional x64 windows 7 ultimate x64 and kubuntu, and its much easyer to fix from the command line as opposed to having to install it from a kubuntu boot disk.

Solve : *censored* Small Linux?

Answer»

i am trying to in stall DSL on my 120 MB usb but i think i repartitioned it incorrectly and i am not sure how to contie you can you give me step by step way to do it i have ubuntu 9.10DSL is a type of Internet connection. Installing DSL on a flash DRIVE makes no sense. What do you mean?

What does "contie" mean?

Please use some punctuation in your writing. Hem mean the Dämn Small Linux, a Live boot CD.
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
Rather that install it on the hard drive, it would be better to put it on a small USB flash drive. Then set the BIOS to boot from USB.
Or just boot from the CD, it is very quick.Aw, Dämn, ER, shucks. anyway how do i get it to boot i think i may have deleted the PARTITION on my usbYou have to change the boot order in BIOS. Do you know how to do that?i can not get it on to the usb? This was copied from the link given below.
Quote

Requirements

Method IV has unique requirements. Methods I through III need:

* You need to know your USB drive letter. These guides assume that your USB Flash Drive is "F:". Please replace "F" with the correct drive letter.
* You need a USB flash drive (also called flash disk, pendrive, USB stick...), 64 MB or bigger
* Download the current dsl-embedded.zip from a mirror (49MB - The Torrent is recommended, and is often the fastest)
* Get & install Syslinux version 3.00 or greater (read the Syslinux instructions for installation)

[edit]
USB Drive Notes

You might look for your USB stick on this list. If you have comments about a particular USB drive that doesn't WORK well when installing DSL from Windows ... add that here.

* For the record, stay away from cheap, knockoff USB keys...they're fine for Windows and stuff like that but apparently they don't always like DSL. (thanks to SaidinUnleashed for this advice.)
* San Disk Cruzer drives are a special case, and the built in software "CD Emulation" must be turned off. (anonymous, 2 Jan 2008)
* SD cards are perfect for DSL and can be used just like USB Drives. They usually have higher transfer speeds, and many laptops have a built-in reader for added convenience. Also, almost no bios problems. Install the same way as a USB Drive.

[edit]
Method I

Follow the instructions from PendriveLinux

Notes

* If you are running Windows Vista, remember to start cmd.exe as Administrator, otherwise the normal cmd.exe won't be able to access the MBR of your USB drive.
* Booting from USB may or may not work on your computer, mostly dependent on its age and bios setup. Some systems may have problems booting from USB drives formatted as FAT32. Changing the drive format to FAT16 may allow DSL to boot. To try it, change your format argument to:

FORMAT F: /fs:FAT

Solve : accessing linux partitions using windows?

Answer»

how can i access windows partitions while i USING redhate 9.0. whinch FILE sustem should i slect in linux ext3 or vfat plz any body help me
Many versions of Linux can read the NTFS, which is used by Windows.
But Windows does not read the Linux file system.
What do you want to do?
Which version of Linux?
Which version of Windows?

You can, if you want, create a small FAT32 partition and share files between the two systems. If something goes wrong, it souled only affect that partition.

Both Windows and Linux can read Flash drives. So you could use a Flash DRIVE an not have to alter anything. You can get a&GB flash now a t Wall Mart. So it is hardly WORTH the effort and risk of altering your partitions on the Hard Drive. Or by two of them. and backup your most important data.Hello,

The Ext2 IFS For Windows provides Windows with a driver of the Ext2 (and Ext3 too, read the FAQ on that page) filesystems, so that Windows can read the partitions. It supports Windows NT 4.0 to Windows Vista and Server 2008. You may want to try that. TheUnixGuy,
Thanks for the oink!

It can format as FAT32, but I don't believe it can format to NTFS. However, it can read NTFS.

I've also run Ubuntu off of CD-ROM to recover files. I don't know whether can be done with a TVIX. I'm not familiar with that device.

Or if you feel brave you could try it yourself carefully and gain the experience. A network card is almost one of the easiest things you can REPLACE. You don't even need to buy one if you want to save money, it is easy to find them at places like garage sales, reuse center, thrift stores etc.

No version of Ubuntu will work very well with that config.

You COULD try DamnSmallLinux or VectorLinux which work better with low spec computers.

And of course you could run slackware and never install a DESKTOP environment.Quote from: comda on March 29, 2010, 03:28:08 PM

Solve : UBUNTU HELP !!!?

Answer»

Hello everybody !!

I am doing a project called " CLOUD COMPUTING-Security for Private Cloud Environment "

For which we had to install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud which will be there in Ubuntu Server Edition CD.

We have to install this in 2 computers, One as CLUSTER and the other as NODE.

This is the first time i am USING UBUNTU. I have no previous experience in Cloud Computing as well. There is no one to guide me as well.

I just have installed CLUSTER and NODE, and installed the Desktop using the command
SUDO APT-GET INSTALL UBUNTU-DESKTOP

there is no clear help in the UBUNTU website too.

So please. somebody help me in UNDERSTANDING UBUNTU, COMMANDS USED

PARTICULARLY IN UBUNTU ENTERPRISE CLOUD, GUIDANCE FOR THIS PROJECT, ANY

HELP RELATED TO THIS PROJECT.

I REALLY hope that i will be helped here.

I THANK everybody for your help.
Hello,

What drags you into that project? Have you ever used Linux before this? I would suggest learning Linux and having some base in networking before diving into that project. It would help if your topic was more specific.

Here is a good general review of this subject.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-10382984-264.html
Note: This is maybe the best review of what is going on.

You can search Google for keywords:
Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud
Ubuntu 9.10

This link may have some information you want
http://www.vartweet.com
This is another general coverage of the topic.
http://www.infoworld.com/d/open-source/ubuntu-linux-adds-private-cloud-backing-494

You have three big obstacles.
1. You are not familiar with Ubuntu
2. You are not familiar with Nodes and Clusters
3. The project is new to the Ubuntu community and is up against more EXPERIENCED plays, such as Red Hat.

Not to mention that Cloud computing is still a young industry.

Hope you have a backup plan. No, not your data, I mean your JOB!

Solve : Good bye Linux?

Answer»

I've tried all i possibly can with Ubuntu, Mint, Slax, and Fedora. it is not for everyone.I've had dual and tri boot set ups. I've tried them in the VM Player, I've ran them as a live CD from a CD and from a USB drive. If you understand XP or Vista and you have no problems with either one of the two, stick with what you know and more important than that, what works. WINDOWS works completely. There are too many THINGS missing in Linux and too many things that don't work. I know it is free, but still, my GOSH, how much grief can a man TAKE before it is time to give up? I tried for about six months. Like I said before, it is not for everyone. Good Luck all future Linux Distro users and God Speed.Quote from: kiddo1972 on February 21, 2010, 04:49:21 PM

Windows works completely.

Ok that's just plain silly. It works for you. and Linux doesn't- alright.

For a lot of people, Macs work for them, and Windows doesn't. For a lot of people Linux works for them, and windows doesn't.

A RACE has more then one competitor, and there is never a clear winner. What kiddo1972 said was his personal observation. And it is a valid correct observation from his perspective. He is OK with Windows and he really did try Linux.

As for me, I spent a lot of time with Linux about 12 years ago and really did try. But after awhile I went back to using Windows for my day to day use. Still there are a few things I do in Linux that are more difficult in Windows. When I need to check out a failing PC, it is easier to pop in a Linux distro and see what happens.

My favorite now is Puppy.

Solve : Ubuntu 9.10 can't get flash player to work?

Answer»

Hi! I recently had a BSOD with Windows XP Pro and changed my OS to Linux. I installed the Hannah Montana one which is based on Kubuntu 9.4, and then upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10.

I managed to install the Firefox browser, but I can't install Flash PLAYER. I have tried heaps of different things to no avail.

I have no idea what I am doing. Does anyone KNOW how I can make it work? Also, if it isn't already obvious, I am very bad at computering so if you could dumb it down for me, that would be very GOOD. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hello there,

It isn't all that hard, really. Firstly, you're running 32-bit or 64-bit Ubuntu?

If its 32-bit:
Code: [Select]sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extrasgets many useful TOOLS INCLUDING flash player. Or to just get Flash Player:
Code: [Select]sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
Now if its 64-bit:
Download Flash Player from here.
Install it to ~/.mozilla/plugins/

Good luck

Solve : JustLinux Registration problems?

Answer»

Is anyone here also a member of JustLinux?

I also wanted to join that forum as well, but the question for registration is based on a question that cannot be answered as it does not come on the screen!! For some unknown reason, the top of the screen is not displayed.....
I have changed my screen pixels, tried both IE and FireFox, the problem is the same.

To just contact the administrators, you have to answer the same question!!!!! Well thought out that one!!!

I guess they get few new members......

I also have taken screen SHOTS demonstrating the problem in both IE & FF.

Regards

Der Fisherman
Can you post the screen shots? Is it asking you for the third heading?.Yes!!Hopefully here are the screenshots!

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]I guess the most obvious question is, do you have JavaScript enabled? I NOTICE to the right in the screenshots there is a box that says internet.com and has a list of links (IT, Developer, Internet News..... ) I'm guessing the answer to the question in your FIRST screenshot question would be Internet News. Type news in the box.
And i would delete all those pictures with your e-mail address in before you get spammed. That was the first thing I tried, plus a load of other gueses, NONE worked.

Thanks for your interest though.

regards

PS Can one of you guys try and join this forum and see what happends? What FF addons do you have? I was getting the same goofy output until I disabled AdBlockPlus, at which point it looks fine.

(the heading is labelled "News" btw)Many thanks to all that helped me.

Solve : Looking for a good PORTABLE distro?

Answer»

Hey guys, I'm looking for a small, but easy to use (for a person who normally uses Win XP), linux distro. I have a 1.85 GB flashdrive that I just formatted and I've always wanted to try Linux.
Requirements:
1. Doesn't have to be too small. (~50-200MB)
2. NEEDS to be user-friendly
3. It would be nice if it came pre-packaged with programs (Firefox, etc.)
4. Easy installation (or at least easy to follow instructions).

Linux Mint would be my reccomendation. Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 21, 2010, 05:51:50 PM

Linux Mint would be my reccomendation.
Ok, so how would I attach that to my flash drive? It also would be nice if it could be in a virtual machine, but LinuxLive has never WORKED in my tests (boot medium error with JVM java virtual machine), and Universal USB Installer from pendrivelinux.com says the flash drive won't be bootable, so I don't know how it will work.http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-linux-mint-install-from-windows/Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 21, 2010, 06:11:57 PM

OK, I know I used the same portable-installer thing to install a later version of the ISO, and it works.
I got at least 3 data errors...and it failed to read the boot sector, causing it to fail again.

EDIT: I am not trying again, except this time I will not attempt to see why it appeared to have frozen on
EXTRACTING casper\filesystem.squashfs

Which by the way, was the first data error. The other 2 data errors OCCURRED directly afterwords.

I retried...same errors.Anyone?There are others...

It says I need burn it to a CD, AND THEN add it to a USB...is there any way to jump that step? I do have burning software, just not a cd.Yes, you can install it without a CD!

Here is one solution:

Ok...I've tried using LinuxLive (or LiveLinux, I can't remember) and Pendrivelinux's installer and neither work. LinuxLive screws up the virtual box and Pendrive hasn't been able to make the drive bootable...I will try unetbootin soon.It works! Well, it at least installed fine.. I'm just feeling apprehensive about changing the bios settings, and in fact, I doubt it will even stay changed. Deepfreeze can be a real pain in the you-know-where sometimes...

Is there a way I can use it in an emulator, SIMILAR to JVM (except for some reason, that didn't work)?Quote from: Helpmeh on March 02, 2010, 04:33:54 PM

The JVM is for running Java programs.... I guess you mean Sun VirtualBox?

I've never had to boot USB via emulation, but if I ever needed to, it turns out that VMWare has a feature called "ACE" whereby I could place any Virtual Machine configuration on a USB flash drive and run it anywhere. Not sure if that feature is in any other VM programs.

Solve : update ubuntu 9.10 to 10,4?

i/m running 9.10 with FF browser&have all my bookmarks ect.... the WAY i want UPDATE MANAGER has 10.4 ready to install if i do will i lose everthing &have to start all over as its taken me 6 MONTHS to set 9.10 the way it is i/m happy with it change or sit pretty? You should be able to do the upgrade via Update Manager and not "lose everything". Still, be sure the backup your important files before proceeding with this. Here's article which is a good reference: http://www.ghacks.net/2010/04/28/upgrading-from-ubuntu-9-10-to-10-4/It should leave everything intact that is important (like installed programs, bookmarks, files etc). But just like soybean I recommend up anything the is irreplaceable. this may be a old post but it does pretty much leave everything as it was.

Solve : Linux computer build.?

Answer»

I am looking to build a Linux computer. I need to know what video card to use. I have an EVGA 8400 card that I have tried to use and have had problems with it on Linux. It works fine with Windows. I loaded the drivers that Linux Mint OFFERED and they didn't work very good. Playing a DVD it would hang and stutter. It worked fine with the on board video. Then I tried to PLAY Super Gamer. I was told by on disk that it wouldn't play because I needed a better video card. It wouldn't even load or INSTALL. It is a live DVD. Then the other thing is the mother board. I planed to use a DG31GL but I don't know if that will work well with Linux. I have it setting on a shelf as a back up for the wife's computer. What would be the best motherboard to use? I plan to use two gigs of ram and a dual core CPU from Intel. Any input on this build would be of help. I know that Linux Mint will run on old stuff, I just WANT to know what it will do using equipment that is new. Thank you much for your time.I believe the DG31GL should work. This info may be helpful: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/dg31gl/sb/CS-029514.htm

If Mint does not work well with it, I suggest you try Ubuntu.I saw that on Intel's site. It just didn't list Mint. I was just WANTING to know if any one had first hand information on witch mother board to use from Intel. As I said in the first post the video card is the big deal. I don't know what to use. The one I have will not work with Linux Mint with the drivers they give.

Solve : granting permissions on a parent directory and all lower level directories?

Answer»

I have a question related to granting permissions.

I have created a directory tree, 3 levels and have GRANTED the required permissions
to each directory. However when I create a file in them, the file does not inherit the permissons
and I am having to manually set them for each new file which is time consuming.

I an using 'chmod' to set the permissions.

How can I set the permissions for the FIRST parent directory and have all lower level
directories and files (existing and any new files, directories) have the same permissions ?

Is this even possible ? I have reviewed the chmod -R option but I'm not SURE if indicating
recursive is what I should be using....use "chmod -R 777 parentDirName"Thanks for your reply.. I ran the cmd per your instructions and all child directoires / files did have the permissions
applied to them. However, I created a new file in one of the directories and it still did not ASSUME the same permissions as the parent directory...I had to rerun the cmd to set the permissions.Quote from: BRIANH on JULY 13, 2010, 03:08:19 PM

Solve : Managing Priviledges for a Web Directory?

Answer»

I have a web site that has the FOLLOWING directory structure

/
/private_html
/public_html
/secret
/images

How can I deny a user FTP access to the "secret" folder but still allow access to the "public_html" directory and the "images" directory?

I have sensitive code (.php files) in that "secret" folder so I don't want the DESIGNER to have access to it... But, I still need to allow web browsers to be able to open and view the files.

I'm utilizing cpanel and WHM but I also have root access to the server.

Thanks in advance!
What level of control do you have over groups and users? In most shared hosting setups, you will have only one user and one group available to you. That user will also be the user under which the webserver runs and the FTP access is created. In this case you could not disallow access via FTP and yet allow it to the webserver.

If you DO have greater control, proceed down this route:

Let's say the webserver runs as user "rjm", group "rjm".
Create a new FTP user for your designer, user "designer", group "designer".
Set ownership on all web files/folders to user "rjm", group "designer" except the secret folder - set that to rjm/rjm. GIVE group "designer"R/W access to all other files and folders.
Ensure secret folder only has R/W access for rjm/rjm - not for anyone else.

There may be other WAYS of solving this problem incidentally, if you're WILLING to say what kind of secret data these PHP files contain/reference.

Solve : Launcher and taskbar problem in 11.10?

Answer»

Recently upgraded from 10.10 to 11.10 and am very happy with Unity. However, just in the last couple of days, I find my left launcher and top taskbars changing to a weird YELLOW COLOR after a few minutes of use. The buttons are basically gone, yet if I hover over them I get what looks like the ilnfo bubble. Clicking on that will brilng up what was on that button. I just have to try to REMEMBER what was written on that particular button. If I go to the very extreme RIGHT on the top bar and click I get the 'shut down' drop down. Then I get the little window asking if I want to continue and again if I click the lower right it does shut down.
Anyone else ever experience anything like this? I changed the video card because I the download screen said I needed better hardware to use Unity. Afteer that everything looks greeat, except for this 'yellow' thingy.I 'Blundered' into the answer....Somehow the NVidia DRIVERS didn't install correctly and therefore after a short time I had 'issues'.
Have re-installed 11.10 and for 3 days now I've had no problem.I'm glad to hear that you got that sorted out.

How can I use the (Unix) COMMAND - COMPRESS in a Linux environment?
Reason: the resulting file will be copied into a remote Unix SYSTEM.
I usually use the gzip command for Linux, but this isn't available in Unix, for the destination user to execute.
test reply1) You can use compress command in Linux by following command.

compress filename

The resultant file will be filename.Z & u can use uncompress command for the same in linux.

2) If you are having Unixware 7.00, you can put gzip & gunzip in /usr/bin, and both the gzip & gunzip will WORK in Unix system also.

Solve : Dynebolic GNU Linux CD?

Answer»

For anyone interested in trying Linux was recently introduced to Dynebolic, an instant bootable GNU/LInux ran off the bootable CD or DVD. You can download the ISO from their site and create your own CD or DVD from the below page.

http://dynebolic.org

Was really impressed on how much they packed on the image.

Was able to boot the CD on multiple computers and have full GUI, mouse, keyboard, and even sound and Internet access. Did have issues unfortunately on one system with it DETECTING the Logitech mouse. However was still able to navigate using the keyboard (F12 key same as right-click on desktop) and I could just hook up another mouse and have it working.

Has multiple media players, gimp, blender, inkscape, gphoto, GQview, Firefox and other browsers, thunderbird and other e-mail clients, IRC clients, Gaim, VNC, samba and so much more. Pretty impressive.

Also able to use the file browser to browse files on the hard drive for those times you need to troubleshoot a computer and even NEST your environment on a USB key or hard drive. There are few other distros out there that are similar too.

Knoppix - probably one of the best known
Kanotix - best on Knoppix, but with slightly better hardware DETECTION and much easier boot options
Backtrack - a penetration testing toolkit, full of network tools (didn't automatically detect a PCMCIA network card on one laptop I tried it on though)

Plus SuSE, Ubuntu and many others have "live" CDs that will achieve a similar purpose.

I recently used Kanotix to bring a server BACK to life, when one of THREE hard drives had failed. Got all the data live very quickly via Samba. Happy customer.

There's many different ways. The one I used was to setup the modem with wvdialconf and then when I wanted to dialup I RAN wvdial

Solve : Extract data rows (Tough One)?

Answer»
Can you all help me about this one below...

There is a txt file CONTAIN data. I want to extract every 2 row of data out of all the data in the txt file.

$cat file.txt ... then the output

ERROR : No input. (error description for account below)
ERROR : AccNo=1111 ServiceID=1
ERROR : SERVICE error. (error description for account below)
ERROR : AccNo=2222 ServiceID=1
ERROR : Network error. (error description for account below)
ERROR : AccNo=3333 ServiceID=1
..... (all with the same format)

How can i select only the AccNo and the error desc.
The output i desire is

AccNo=1111 No input
AccNo=2222 Service Error

I cannot USE grep cause it will take all the data in the row. How can is select row
I try to seperate those data like below

file1.txt file2.txt
AccNo=1111 No input
AccNo=2222 Service Error

But, how can i append those file so it can be in 1 row.

AccNo=1111 No input
AccNo=2222 Service Error

Please assist me coz i really need help..thankssed -n 'p;n' file.txtfor the odd lines, and
sed -n 'n;p' file.txtfor the even lines.

I suspect you can work out the rest. Not sure of any easy way to combine the output of the 2 files, so I'd program it in awk with a couple of tr and sed tweaks to simplify the awk program.

Code: [Select]cat file.txt | tr '()' '::' | sed -e 's/ServiceID=1//' | awk -F: '($3 == "error description for account below"){error = $2}($3 != "error description for account below"){print $2 error}'
The tr changes the brackets to colons, so awk can use colon as a field delimeter.

The sed removes the ServiceID only if its 1. You can adapt the sed command to encompass other things later.

The awk program is pretty dumb by only using a unequal test, but you have the basis of the program, so I'm sure you can adapt it to properly check that the second field contains AccNo.

I get the feeling that I might be doing someone's homework for them, so I'm in future I'll just refer any questions back to this forum for examples of how to grep awk sed tail and tr. I'm pretty sure there's enough here now for anyone to work out how to do most things.Quote
Code: [Select]cat file.txt | tr '()' '::'
above can be written
Code: [Select]tr '()' '::' < file.txt
Useless use of cathmm..thanks for all your replies. It really help me a lot.

But, i still dont know how to append those words into a row.

ERROR : No input. (error description for account below)
ERROR : AccNo=1111 ServiceID=1
ERROR : Service error. (error description for account below)
ERROR : AccNo=2222 ServiceID=1

the problem is, i want to append those words into a row so i can put in the database.

ERROR : No input. AccNo=111
ERROR : Service error. AccNo=2222

i tried to use
cat file.txt > file2.txt

but it just append those word into another row. Can i put the account no in another column of a row? Or is it not possible because of the error description is not fixed and can be different for each account. So, it is not possible for me to use `cut` cmd. how can i do itQuote

Not the best solution, but possible one.
Code: [Select]sed -n 'p;n' file.txt > 1
sed -n 'n;p' file.txt > 2
sed -i 's/ERROR : \(AccNo.*\) Service.*/\1/' 1
sed -i 's/ERROR : \(.*\) (error.*/\1/' 2
paste 2 1 > new.txt

Well spotted ghostdog74

Quote
Code: [Select]paste 2 1 > new.txt
Thanks ghostdog74 for introducing me to a new command. I've been using Unix for 20 YEARS, and not come accross paste before.

I still prefer awk programming in this SCENARIO, as its more flexible.
I hope you don't mind me quoting this from your PM, as its something other awk novices might be interested in ...

Quote
awk -F: '($3 == "error description for account below"){error = $2}($3 != "error description for account below"){print $2 error}'
for $3 and error ... is it a variable u declare in the awk cmd or is it referring to the column of the data.

"error" is an undeclared variable which I made up, and $3 means the third field from the input file (where as I said before -F: defines colon as the field seperator).

Remember in awk scripts not to prefix variable names with dollar, as you would in shell scripting. Here is an example of what would happen.
Code: [Select]echo one two three four | awk 'BEGIN{fred=3}{print $fred}'This does not display "3" as you might think, but in fact displays the third field "three" instead.

Finally, here's an example of a predeclared variable in awk
Code: [Select]ls *.txt | awk '{print "mv " quote $0 quote " " quote $0 ".old" quote}' quote='"' | shHere the $0 means the entire line

Solve : Browsing Question?

Answer»

Got a quick one...is BROWSING from a live CD any safer than from the system on the HD? From VIRUSES & such? Yes I have all the anti this & that but was just curious. In short, yes, probably. Your live CD is a "disposable" operating system. If you do not make USE of the hard drives for storage of data, any changes a virus may make will be lost once the computer is turned off. Plus, you're presumably using a Linux distro, and Linux is less virus-prone than Windows anyway.Yep...Zenwalk Gnu. A friend told me it might be more compatible with my old machine, & so far so good. Looks LIKE I got lots of new gadgets to learn. If I can get used to it then I may insall it o a separate HD. Thanks!Enjoy the ride!

Solve : cannot start dt messaging system?

Answer»

i have recntly loaded aix on a server, i have added the ip ADDRESS and EVERYTHING, but when i logged out and tried to log back in, i get this message: dt MESSAGING SYSTEM cannot be started. the ip address in /etc/hosts is correct, other than that i cannot think of anything that is wrong. As far as I know, experience of AIX is fairly limited round here. I'm one of the Unix/Linux regulars, but have never had a play with AIX, sorry. There should be an option to do a command line login. Once you've logged in that way, you should be able to find the ERROR log for your last GUI login. That should give you the detail you need.

Solve : Favorite distribution?

Answer»

Choose your favorite linux distributionWhat is the point of "I don't use Linux"?

8-)fffreakUse the right DISTRO for the JOB. Eg:

Ubuntu for most desktop purposes.
VectorLinux for older/slower harder.
CentOS/TinySofa for servers.I use Windows for the most part because i play GAMES. But Kubuntu is my favourite distro.I started using SuSe because that's what my employer rebadges as Java Desktop Server.

But now they've partnered with Intel, I'll probably go back to using Solaris x86. Especially as you can run linux zones with the latest Solaris 11. (I'm currently experimenting with build 56 beta version of Solaris 11)
I am just learning linux myself. just general stuff. I used OpenSuse 10.1 and I just loved it.
but Ubuntu took over my vote just coz' of apt-get First visit here...just downloaded the Zenwalk GNU this morning (live CD version) to try on my antique here. Works great with only 450Mghz processor & 160 Mgb ram.
Its a 400+ mb download but with lots of features & the ability to tinker right on the disk. Picked up all my hardware with no problems, & boots in a couple mins. on mine.
Ive got copies of the ubantu that were sent to me but my system is too slow for it. Comes with firefox but you can program it to use any browser you choose it says.
Puppy 2.14 because it's light, very fast and can load entirely in RAM.
Can give a retired Windows machine new life.
Easiest wireless configuration that I've done. (v2.14BETA)

For the big, plush variety I like SuSE 10.0 and Kubunto 6.06 LTS
I VOTED for Puppy because I think ramdrive is the future and it's fun to see how fast it is compared to spinning disk technology.By the way, I found this neat little distro called 'feather' linux. It's a lot like DSL or Puppy, but, in a way, better.

act222 61891791 actA

PLEASE help me coz i've tried it for several WEEKS but still cant find it solutions. All of your help and reply i appreciated and in advance thank you for all your helpIf this is a class project, which tools have you been taught to use so far?

If this is not a class project, are you open to us providing a solution using a scripting language? (Shell script, PHP, Perl, etc.)This is not class project. I'm doing development for organization i'm working right now to do some reporting for the company data. I'm new staff here and this is the FIRST time for me in script(unix) environment beacuse it is used here. I never knew and never be in project that involve shell script. More familiar with PHP, and Microsoft product i guess.

I need shell script language as the current program that support the data used it too. Please provide me solution in shell script. If u cant, just give me guidline and I can explore it myself afterward. I'm only familiar with cat, awk command. But i dont think it is possible to solve my problem doesnt it??

The solution i tried before

VAR=`ll -lrt act* | awk '{print $9}' #this will invoke the file name into variable VAR

then i try, to combine all the files

cat $VAR > act_all.txt

if put it into another column using cat awk command, the output was like below

the output (wrong)
act111 61897689 actA
act222 61891791 actB
act333 66688844 actC
act555 45454545
act777 54545544
act999 22222656

output(needed)
act111 61897689 actA
act222 61891791 actA
act333 66688844 actA
act555 45454545 actB
act777 54545544 actB
act999 22222656 actC

The amount(count) of data in each file is vary from each other. It count is different for each file, but will carry out the same format

I would appreciate if you're willing to help. Thanks

Code: [Select]for f in act*
do
SED "s/$/$f/" $f >> new1
done
