The filial duty comprises of obedience, loyality and devotional spirit among the children for their parents. But the right to self-happiness forbids the entry for filial duty. For example, someone has brought tickets for movie in advance for Sunday. Unfortunately, his mother is down with fever the same day. It becomes his duty (filial) to forget the movie and devote time to his mother. This decision has been called problematic in this story because the sense of responsibility towards elders is lacking in the younger generation. The children who prefer filial duty above personal happiness learn the complete art of living.

पुत्रोचित कर्त्तव्य के अन्तर्गत माता-पिता के लिए बच्चों में आज्ञापालन, वफादारी और समर्पण की भावना आती हैं। परन्तु आत्म-प्रसन्नता का ज़ो अधिकार है, वह पुत्रवत कर्तव्य का प्रवेश नहीं चाहता और इस प्रकार जीवन का आनन्द लेता है। उदाहरण के लिए, किसी व्यक्ति ने रविवार के लिए अग्रिम रूप से सिनेमा के टिकिट खरीद लिए। दुर्भाग्यवश उसकी माँ को बुखार हो जाता है। यह उसका पुत्रवत कर्त्तव्य हो जाता है कि वह सिनेमा को भूल जाए और सारा समय माँ की देख-रेख में, दवा आदि देने में व्यतीत करे। इस निर्णय को इस कहानी में समस्यात्मक कहा गया है क्योंकि बड़ों के प्रति उत्तरदायित्व का विवेक जवान पीढ़ी में कम होता जा रहा है। वे बच्चे जो व्यक्तिगत प्रसन्नता से ऊपर पुत्रवत् कर्त्तव्य को रखते हैं वे जीवन जीने की सम्पूर्ण कला सीख लेते हैं।

We see unity of time in this story. Eveline who is sitting alone in a room plans to run away with Frank. Her lover fulfils the notion of unity of circumstances. This story proceeds in an excellent order. In the second phase it picturises the change in location, attitude of family-members- (father being old and disciplinarian). Every thing is unmoved yet the author has put alive pictures of two continents Europe and America, and the scene of deck where in reality Eveline did not go. She is merely seated beside a window in a dark room and her mind is busy with her plan of secretely running away.

Eveline thought about her decision of eloping with her boyfriend. She realised her responsibilities towards her home, her ageing father, her job at the store, social repercussions, and fear of being separated from her known people. Above all, her promise to her dying mother prevented her from leaving her home. She had promised to her mother at the time of her death that she would take care of the home after her death. Since then she had been taking care of her siblings, her father and every object in the house. She felt that her father would miss her. She also thought what people would say about her at the store.

एवलीन ने अपने पुरुष मित्र के साथ भागने के विषय पर बहुत सोच-विचार किया। उसने अपने घर के प्रति अपनी जिम्मेदारियों, अपने वृद्ध होते पिता, स्टोर पर अपनी नौकरी, सामाजिक परिणाम, और अपने लोगों से दूर हो जाने का अहसास किया। इन सबसे ज्यादा उसे अपनी मरती हुई माँ को दिये गये वचन ने घर छोड़कर जाने से रोका। उसने मृत्यु के समय अपनी माँ से वायदा किया था कि उनके बाद वह अपने भाई-बहिनों, अपने पिता, और घर की प्रत्येक चीज की देखभाल करेगी। उसने महसूस किया कि उसके पिता उसे याद करेंगे। उसने यह भी सोचा कि स्टोर पर लोग उसके विषय में क्या कहेंगे।

Eveline’s father said these words. It reflects that he did not like foreigners to come and live in his country. On the other hand, his wife too was ill and he did not like the Italians playing music. That is why he ordered them to go away after giving them six pence. He was an unpleasant and bitter man.

ऐवलीन के पिताजी ने ये शब्द कहे। यह प्रदर्शित करता है कि वह विदेशियों का अपने देश में आना व रहना पसन्द नहीं करता था। दूसरी ओर उसकी पत्नी बीमार थी और उसने इटली निवासियों के द्वारा संगीत बजाना पसन्द नहीं किया इसलिये उसने छः पैन्स देकर इटली वासियों को जाने का आदेश दिया। वह एक अप्रिय व कटु व्यक्ति था।

Here ‘the window’ symbolises the way through which Eveline saw all the past days with all their happy as well as unhappy memories. – “The gathering dusk” symbolises a state of confusion leaving aside all previous preparations and plans in the dark. It symbolises Eveline’s mental state of indecision whether she should elope or not. “The dusty cretonne and its odour” symbolises the old things which she was attached to but now they were dusty, which means they were old and its odour again symbolises the feeling associated with them and the memories of the days spent in her home among them.

यहाँ खिड़की उस माध्यम का प्रतीक है जिसके द्वारा एवलीन ने अपने सभी बीते हुए अच्छे व बुरे दिनों को देखा था। आती हुई ‘‘गोधूलि वेला” व्यवधान की दशा को बताता है जिसमें सारी पूर्व निर्धारित तैयारियाँ एवं योजना अन्धकार में पड़ी रहती हैं। यह एवलीन की मानसिक दशा की प्रतीक है जिसमें कि वह अनिर्णय की अवस्था में है कि घर से भागे अथवा नहीं। * धूल से ढका क्रेटन, और उसकी गंध’ उन पुरानी चीजों का प्रतीक है, जिनसे वह बहुत अधिक जुड़ी हुई थी पर अब उन पर धूल चढ़ चुकी थी, और उसकी महक फिर से उनके साथ जुड़ी भावनाओं और उनके साथ घर में बिताये दिनों की यादों का प्रतीक है।

Yes, through the use of sentences – “No ! No ! No ! It was impossible” and – “her eyes gave no sign of love or farewell or recognition” – the author indicates his : judgement of Eveline in the story. He seems to be approving of the decision made by Eveline. He presents Eveline as an ideal daughter.

James Joyce in his story ‘Eveline’ grapples with many vital aspects of contemporary society. 

The most important of them are as follows:

1. The major focus of “Eveline” is the oppressed status of women in the Irish society as is shown with the protagonist Eveline. After the death of her mother she is forced to take up on a dead end job in the stores, care for her younger siblings and endure the tyrannical authority of her father, To escape there responsibilities and tyranny, she plans to elope with Frank although she changes her mind at the last moment.

2. Eveline is not given the right to choose her husband and her father quarrels with Frank, her boyfriend.

जेम्स ज्वायस की कहानी एवलीन तत्कालीन समाज के बहुत से पहलुओं से संघर्ष करती है। 

उनमें से सर्वाधिक महत्वपूर्ण निम्न है:

1. कहानी ‘‘एवलीन” का मुख्य बिन्दु आइरिश समाज में महिलाओं के शोषण का है, जैसा कि कहानी की नायिका | एवलीन को दिखाया गया है। माँ की मृत्यु के पश्चात उसे स्टोर्स में उन्नति रहित नौकरी करने को मजबूर किया जाता है, साथ में दो छोटे बच्चों की देखभाल की भी जिम्मेदारी उसे दी जाती है और पिता के अत्याचार भी उसे सहन करने पड़ते हैं। इस अत्याचार और जिम्मेदारियों से बचने के लिये वह फ्रैंक के साथ भागने की योजना बनाती है। यद्यपि अंतिम क्षण में वह अपना मन बदल लेती है।

Eveline was similar to her mother in many ways. She was discharging all the duties of her mother as she had promised to her while she was dying and like her mother, she too was making sacrifices for her father in looking after the two young children. She gave all her salary to her father.

एवलीन कई प्रकार से अपनी माँ के समान थी। वह अपनी माँ के सभी कर्तव्य पूरे कर रही थी जैसा कि उसने उससे मरते समय वादा किया था। अपनी माँ की तरह वह भी पिता के लिये बच्चों की देखभाल में अपना बलिदान दे रही थी। वह अपनी पूरी तनख्वाह अपने पिता को दे देती थी।

Eveline was planning to go to Buenos Aires, a port city in Argentina (South America) with her boyfriend Frank. It was her secret plan. She was planning to do it because she was afraid of her father. Due to unfavorable circumstances she felt uneasiness at home. She handed over her whole salary to her father but still he criticised her all the time.

ऐवलीन अपने पुरुष मित्र फ्रेंक के साथ ब्यूनस आयर्स, अर्जेन्टीना (दक्षिण अमेरिका) जाने की योजना बना रही थी)। यह उसकी गुप्त योजना थी। वह इसकी योजना इसलिये बना रही थी क्योंकि वह अपने पिता से डरती थी। विपरीत परिस्थितियों के कारण वह घर पर असुविधा महसूस करती थी। वह अपनी सारी तनख्वाह अपने पिता को दे देती थी किन्तु फिर भी वह हर समय उसकी आलोचना करते थे।

Besides her duties as a shop girl in the stores, Eveline had several responsibilities at home like cooking, washing and cleaning of the house. She also looked after the two young children so that they might go to school regularly and get their meals regularly. She had to work hard.

स्टोर में शाप गर्ल के कर्तव्य के अतिरिक्त एवलीन की घर में तमाम जिम्मेदारियाँ थी जैसे कि खाना बनाना बर्तन धोना और घर की सफाई करना। उसे दो छोटे बच्चों की देखभाल भी करनी पड़ती थी ताकि वे समय से नियमित स्कूल जा सकें और उन्हें नियमित रूप से भोजन मिल सके। उसे कठिन परिश्रम करना पड़ता था।

1. Frank – Frank was Eveline’s boy friend. He possessed a handsome personality with a good job as a sailor in a shipping company. Both shared the same qualities of music and singing. Frank wanted to marry Eveline and was protective towards her.
2. Harry – He was Eveline’s brother and was enthusiastic in keeping his sister happy. Both of them had grown up together and Harry was an earning member of the family.

The characters whom Eveline did not like and love are :

1. Her father because he criticized her all the time.
2. Her store keeper – Miss Gavan because she always used taunting words for her.

Eveline worked as a shop girl in the stores and she earned seven shillings per week as her salary.
