There came a qualitative change in the attitude of the poet. Earlier he used to look towards his friends in the hour of his need. They deserted him and didn’t rise to the occasion. He learnt a lesson. He realized that his ‘good right hand’ was his best friend. Only his hard work and honest labor could change his fate and overcome his poverty. Things changed for the better. He became prosperous and rich. He didn’t need his selfish friends anymore. On the other hand, when he became prosperous, all his friends who had deserted him, came back to him one by one. But time had changed and he didn’t need their help anymore.

C. Mackay’s My Good Right Hand’ is a motivational and inspiring poem. It gives a definite inspiring message to the readers. Self-help is the best help.Our ‘good right hand’ is our best friend. Only through the ‘good right hand we can work hard to change our fate. Our hard work can help us in overcoming our poverty and bad days. The poet overcame his sadness through self-realization. He realized that self-help is the only help that can change one’s fate. His courage revived. He forgot all about his selfish friends and acquaintances. Reposing faith in them was like building a castle on the sand. He realized that his ‘good right hand’ was his best friend. This realization ended his dejection. His spirit became light and cheerful.He could shape his own fate not by depending on others but depending on his hard work. Reposing faith in god and in his ‘good right hand’ helped him in overcoming his sadness.

The story of ‘Papa Panov’ according to me is an interesting story to introduce to children, inculcating in them values of selflessness, empathy, sharing and love for humanity. God resides in those who love their kind, is vividly put forth through this story. This story has inspired me to go out and help those in need.

The smile and blessings I get when I help the needy makes my day and makes me feel blessed. It is rightly said ‘Service to man is service to God’.
