Solve : Find audio bitrate? |
Answer» I'm looking for a way to check the audio bitrate of files that don't show the bitrate. I can't check the audio bitrate by right clicking the files like I usually do and I tried checking it with VideoSpec, FFmpeg and Spek, but it didn't work. When I tried checking the video file's audio bitrate with VideoSpec it looked like this: |

Solve : Apple or Intel. Who is moving into the future?? |
Answer» This is not exactly news, but it might be. (This is Other.) Attend any major tech exhibition and you’ll find Intel announcing or reannouncing mildly improved processors. Whether you’re at IFA in Berlin, CES in Las Vegas, or Computex in Taipei, the spiel is always the same: the future is wireless, battery life matters to everyone,In short, the article ALLEGES that Intel is just not moving fast enough to to LEAD the way into the future of electronic technology. Here is the link: https://www.theverge.com/2018/4/3/17191986/apple-intel-cpu-processor-design-competition Meanwhile, here is the latest blurb from Intel: https://www.theverge.com/2018/4/3/17188994/intel-core-i9-laptops-coffee-lake-14-nm-architecture-processor-faster-u-series-i5-i7-optane Quote Ever since Intel announced its first Core i9 processor for desktops last year, it’s only been a matter of time until the company brought that branding to laptops, too. Today, Intel is announcing its first Core i9 chip for laptops, with what it claims is “the best gaming and CREATION laptop processor Intel has ever built.”Yes, that is also from The Verge. But others have also reported the Intel stuff recently. The new CPU might be called the Core i9 chip. Apparently Apple is not buying into the hype. Quote In short, the article alleges that Intel is just not moving fast enough to to lead the way into the future of electronic technology. This assertion isn't anywhere near accurate....Just cause iNtel doesn't do it the way Apple chooses to do it is irrelevant. For reaffirmation of this take a look at Market share.Apple's mobile devices are where their real revenue lies, and as a result their laptops and desktops and their Operating Systems for such have been B-team efforts. This seems like an effort to effectively sunset all their Desktop and Laptop efforts and the "general" OS X Operating System, and have everything running some version of iOS, RATHER than have separated iOS and OS X. It doesn't make much sense for Apple to effectively point fingers at Intel when Apple hasn't even been properly using Intel's processors anyway. Even their highest-end offerings have insufficient cooling to prevent the CPU from thermal throttling. The Core i9 Processor is not "new"- as your second quote mentions it was announced last year and they have been available since around November 2017. They aren't relevant to Apple, however, who as mentioned is barely able to engineer their systems for TDP of the i7 processors in their highest end SKUs. They are fundamentally the "Extreme Edition" processors which provide the highest core COUNT, overclocking, and performance at a massive price premium.. They aren't even an upgrade option from i3/i5/i7 since they actually use a different socket. |

Solve : How AMD and Inell team up? |
Answer» The is not recent news. But NEW to me, maybe you too. Rivals Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are teaming up to produce a laptop computer chip that uses an Intel processor and an AMD graphics unit. The partnership will pit the two companies against competitor Nvidia. The new chip will be made for laptops that are designed to be thin and portable, but still powerful enough for gamers who need a stronger option to play intensive games. It’ll be part of Intel’s eighth-generation Intel Core line and marks Intel and AMD’s first partnership since the 1980s, as The Wall Street Journal notes. This year: Intel and AMD announce first Core i5 and i7 chips with Radeon . Quote Back in November, longtime rivals Intel and AMD shocked the computing world when the two companies ANNOUNCED that they’d be teaming up to create laptop chips that combined Intel’s Core line of processors with AMD’s Radeon graphics. So coming soon Intel CPU with AMD graphics. Hard to believe! EDIT: Here is the Wall Street Journal article: https://www.wsj.com/articles/rivals-intel-and-amd-team-up-on-pc-chips-to-battle-nvidia-1509966064 Checkout the video. It's interesting that Intel ALREADY does their own GPU's with their INTEL HD Graphics that they implement in many of their APU's. I guess instead of engineering a higher end performance GPU they are taking a cost shortcut by buying into AMD's already existing GPU design I guess. |

Solve : Sharing Music? |
Answer» So I come from the days when if you wanted to share a bunch of music, with songs put together in a logical order, you made a mix tape. It takes time for many members to chicken.Personally I require 7 days written notice before I turn into a chicken. A single day might work- I'd try to wing it, though I might bock and the prospect. Anyway I didn't reply because the original question seems like a "What's the best way to pirate music?" question. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 21, 2018, 12:14:54 AM Personally I require 7 days written notice before I turn into a chicken. Last time I did that it turned into a clustercluck. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 21, 2018, 12:14:54 AM Anyway I didn't reply because the original question seems like a "What's the best way to pirate music?" question. Yes. Mixtapes were technically illegal. So are their digital successors, I believe. I remember when dual-cassette-deck boomboxes and hi-fi units started selling in Britain in the 1980s, the British Phonographic Industry (a trade group) tried to get them banned, then when that failed, they lobbied for a tax (paid to them) then had to settle for pushing out an ad campaign, widely ridiculed, saying "Home taping is killing music". I feel so old, because I actually remember "Don't copy that floppy"... (1992)... Personally, I think you're all showing a great deal of pluck by responding in this thread. Be glad you didn't turn into a Turducken...May I say something serious? If a group of people think they have a real need for using copyright music and if they can demonstrate prudent use of the permission, there arfe legal ways to do it without paying a huge license fee. See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_licensing Quote The neutrality of this article is disputed. Relevant discussion may be found on the talk page. Please do not remove this message until conditions to do so are met. (July 2016) (Learn how and when to remove this template message)The article does goon to outline some things that are legal. Quote Broadcasting, in the context of music licensing, means the playback of recorded or live music for groups of people beyond what might be normally expected in a social setting. Legal claims are filed frequently against bookstores, bars, and live music VENUES that broadcast music without first obtaining a performance license.and... Quote Section 110 exemptionsGranted, the Wikipedia. article has some rough sports it gives you a guide for what you want in a Google search. IMHO, Any small group pf people meeting without commercial motives e can lawfully listen to copyright muse. Examples: Some colleges campus usage. Research or education use Girl Scouts can use copyright songs.. Quote In August 1996, The Wall Street Journal published a frontpage article, "Ascap Cautions the Girl Scouts: Don't Sing 'God Bless America,'" describing the scene at Diablo Day Camp in Lafayette, California, as a troupe of Girl Scouts danced to the Macarena in silence for fear of copyright infringement.[36] A public relations situation for ASCAP occurred, as the video performance of Girl Scouts silently dancing made its way onto mainstream news. The Wikipedia article above has more detail about these examples. Check the references for even more.I'm reasonably certain that a mix tape is considered "fair use". (Around the time of PMRC they tried to put a tax on blank cassettes, I don't know if that was going into a fund for artists or just another levy.) Since sharing Spotify lists is an actual Thing, I'm also reasonably certain that's also fair use. I'm guessing that, while it may technically fall under something similar that says you're not supposed to play a store-bought DVD on an oil rig without paying royalties, my sharing music with my wife's non-profit lab is not 100 percent kosher - but it's probably 99 44/100 percent pure. I would be happy to kick in to the RIAA or ASCAP, but I'm sure it would be a poultry amount. As I have been seeking (and sometimes offering) assistance on this Board for over a decade, and I don't think I've ever once posted a "How do I bootleg something" post, I'm going to suggest that I have not flown the coop on this one, and you can presume innocent intent. When I put together the list of appropriate music from my (purchased) library of over 2,100 records and 1,000 CDs, I found some songs that weren't on Spotify. So I was wondering what other ways people shared music with their peeps. Quote As I have been seeking (and sometimes offering) assistance on this Board for over a decade, and I don't think I've ever once posted a "How do I bootleg something" post, I'm going to suggest that I have not flown the coop on this one, and you can presume innocent intent. rj we weren't insuniating that at all...and i understand. It's just that the Forums have always had a strong policy of not gettin into copyright issues...be it software music movies or whatever. If we took the time to look at each instance the time explaining legal issues alone that would be a waste. I'm comfortable with our approach of erring on the side of caution... Hope that explains things a bit.Yeah, I just don't have any friends to ask. They are all either, "what's physical media?" or "how do you get music on that series of tubes?". I wasn't trying to egg anybody on.If we are talking U.S Law, the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 is why Mix tapes are legal as fair use, but the wording of the act means it only applies to Analog recordings. For digital recordings, the only equivalent is a CD-R that was sold as a "Music" disc (they have an added tax, apparently). Anything else (in terms of music distribution) is not legally fair use- you cannot (legally) burn MP3's to a DVD and give it to somebody, for example, or fill a flash drive or MP3 player or put files on a cloud drive and share it with others or anything. (You can share playlists on streaming services, of course, since you aren't actually distributing any copyright content). Those responsible for enforcing and protecting copyright for Music labels don't usually care about "intent" or "good faith" actions, either; Remember they are the same folks who sued elderly grandmothers who had no Internet at all for millions of dollars in damages for "pirating music". As another example, let's take your specific situation. You aren't allowed to say take the music you've got in MP3 format and say compress it and put it on a cloud drive or flash drive to allow others to access it. That would be illegal and I would totally not encourage it. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 23, 2018, 07:56:03 PM If we are talking U.S Law The UK High Court ruled in June 2015 that making a single copy of a song you bought on iTunes is illegal, and hardly anyone noticed. The ruling is bizarre, from the consumer's point of view. It states that consumers do not have a right to make any type of copy of music they have bought, even if it's only for their own personal use. That mixtape playlist you just burned for your girlfriend? Totally illegal in Britain. |

Solve : salvaged hard drive? |
Answer» Hello, I recently took out the hard drive of a liquid damaged laptop HP, the hard drive is still working(I think) because I recovered the personal files using a SATA/ USB cable to a good working laptop. Now, my question is how do I find out if the hard drive has windows 10 operating system on it and is it possible to boot from this hard drive? Well the situation you have here is that Windows was licensed only for the original computer. Placing the hard drive into a different computer and use of Windows is in violation of the EULA. Additionally if you were to do this the drive would likely boot loop because of drastic differences between original hardware and the hardware its running on now. One loop hole in this would be if you FOUND another exact model laptop with same main board and CPU that was also licensed to run the same OS and software/drivers, it would be similar to as if the main board was replaced due to damage as a "Repair". Anything beyond that though is not permitted by Microsoft. Quote from: strttech223 on April 28, 2018, 12:44:34 PM how do I find out if the hard drive has windows 10 operating system on it? Assuming you can get to the \Windows\System32 folder in Windows Explorer, and see the file ntoskrnl.exe, then you can right click the file and get the Properties up. In the DETAILS you will see product version information: 4.x: NT 4.x 5.0: Windows 2000 5.1: Windows XP 5.2: Windows 2003 Server or Windows XP-64-bit 6.0: Windows Vista 6.1: Windows 7 6.2; Windows 8 6.3: Windows 8.1 10.x: Windows 10 This is on a Windows 7 boot drive: This is on a Windows 10 boot drive: Quote from: strttech223 on April 28, 2018, 12:44:34 PM and is it possible to boot from this hard drive? What Dave said about the EULA and boot loops. If it boots at all, if the make and model are similar but not identical you might get erratic behaviour, if it is the exact same model, motherboard revision, CPU model and stepping, etc, it could be OK, BUT bear in mind the OEM hardware signature the install was activated against includes hardware serial numbers for CPU, hard drive, and motherboard chipset at least, so you are going to be way past the bar for a "significant hardware change" and you will most likely have to phone Microsoft and convince the agent you are entitled to a NEW activation code. Even if you don't face activation issues at the time of first TRYING it, a Windows update could put the system into the non-activated state, and if you have sold on the machine as having full legal Windows, you may get an angry customer banging on your door. Note for Google indexer: How can I find the Windows version installed on a hard drive or mounted drive image? |

Solve : Apple or Microsoft. Wo is ahead now?? |
Answer» Apple INC. (AAPL) vs. Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) The above title is from a recent article in The Motley Fool. https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/03/23/better-buy-apple-inc-aapl-vs-microsoft-corporation.aspx Written by Brian Stoffel and published on March 23, 2018 To get his point, consider what USA today said back in January this year. In that RAG Apple was reported to be the loser. Here is the link: https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/markets/2016/01/29/apple-vs-microsoft-heres-who-won/79481788/ Strange how people interpret stock reports. I look at that chart and see Microsoft overpriced and Apple in a better position for a new investor. Well, what I THINK does not matter because I don't hive any money to invest. Now I am posting this to provoke you to respond and say what you think about the future of these two companies and the future of Personal Computing as we know it. Also, Somme personal friends of mine think the Apple iPad is a better choice for a tablet computer. The ways things are going, many new households will not buy a desktop computer, but will go for a tablet. Aside from thank, what you see in the links above are two opposite views of the future, from an investment standpoint. But investors a fickle, they will shift if they see a company is losing it grip on the market. If the stock market fails out of love with Microsoft, it can mean Microsoft will not be ABLE to continue its lean in the Personal Computer business. Maybe. Look over the two links above. Do you agree? Does it even matter? |

Solve : Web pages won't load? |
Answer» I was not sure what topic to put this QUESTION under, but anyway, for the past week my desk top computer has been not working because even though I am able to connect to the internet, no web pages will load. And even a Bible library I have installed on my pc will come up but then won't respond and it has nothing to do with internet connection! I have a Dell optiplex 780 with Windows 7 on it. The guy that has fixed my pc before doesn't answer my messages (I do pay him for his work!), so I don't know what to do. I can't afford to call a regular tech. I only have $100 in the pc as I bought it about a year ago on ebay as a refurbished one. I'm almost wondering if I should just buy another refurbished pc, since it might be so EXPENSIVE to get it fixed. I just don't know! Please advise! I am very ignorant about all things technical. |

Solve : Curious if anyone has messed around with ReactOS to say whether its any good?? |
Answer» Was looking for a new OS to try out and a website pointed me to TrueOS to which i found this video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoxluItj1uA One of the downloads flagged as ( I believe but not positive yet ) as a false positive by Firefox which was interestingNot sure what you MEAN here- as Firefox isn't an AV Scanner. Perhaps you have an add-on that is doing this?I thought it was firefox that was flagging it, .... but perhaps its AVG Antivirus able to warn through Firefox somehow.... Included some pics showing the warning I get, and that I dont have many addons installed ( none for malware control ) for Firefox 59, and AVG Free might be flagging this through Firefox somehow. Simple test...DLoad it again in FFox with AVG dis-abled...Thanks for that suggestion Patio... Never thought of that approach to the what should be a false positive detection observed within FireFox download list. iirc Firefox will use installed AV software to scan downloads. ReactOS components have been flagged by a few AV softwares for a good number of years. I found this old thread. I would suspect that the AV software that flags it is probably seeing Windows DLL and EXE files and freaks out because it's not signed by Microsoft, as that is something that could occur on a Windows system that is infected. I used to have a VM with ReactOS, but DELETED it a while back. Just installed it again now and it still won't accept the Windows 9x or XP VMWare Tools (Drivers). "Explorer" hangs altogether by simply viewing the directory containing the file. It also hangs trying to run the installer from command prompt. Well, The install itself went smoothly, I suppose. I was able to install the Update Lister bootstrapper for our business software but lost interest. I'm not sure if the needed .NET version will install but that's something for later. What do you mean regarding "Crippled OpenGL Performance"? Is that a reference to LINUX distributions typically coming with a software-based MESA OpenGL driver and thus getting lower performance than Windows Out-of-the-box? |

Solve : New Old News Desk: 'Always Connected.'? |
Answer» Maybe this was news back in December 2016. Why does this remind me of the 'Instant On' TV sets made back in the days or Cathode Ray Picture Tubes? It was a dumb idea then. It is a dumb idea now.I can see the parallels. Instant On/Quick On was basically such that the TV would power when "off" in ORDER to keep the CRT itself "preheated" so that when turned on, you got a picture pretty much right away. Don't see how it was necessarily a dumb idea. If anything, the MAIN problem- aside from power usage concerns- was that televisions typically didn't have a "real" power switch to turn that feature off. That said, I'm not entirely sure what you actually get from something like this. It seems like it would only be of particular use to those addicted to social media or workaholics. One oddity I noticed is that, in the article the writer says "always being connected just feels like the most natural, safe and secure way to work with teams and be creative." Which seems weird. being always connected to the internet seems like it would be inherently *less* secure. on what planet does it not? Or are they comparing it to using public wifi? |

Solve : Password Manager?? |
Answer» For the longest time, i have let Firefox "save" most of my passwords. And, yes, I sometimes use the same password for several different sites.
between PC access codes, web banking, social media access, forums, online services etc, I usually get through the day only typing in 6 passwords, so can remember those because I type them in so frequently.obviously password managers become more attractive with the requirement to remember more password. + 1On the other hand there are features of password managers which largely solve the common "problems" people see:
A lot of it comes down to making a sensible judgement over how you use a password manager and what accounts you store in it. For example, for me I use a well known password manager with two factor authentication so an external attacker would need to have both access to my smartphone as well as my password (which is never stored anywhere) in order to access my account. I then use different, secure passwords for every service which are stored in the password manager. However, I do not store my email credentials in my password manager and instead use a unique password which I remember as well as having two factor authentication on my email account. This means that worst comes to the worst and I lose access to my password manager, I can reset most of my passwords over email. I also use memorised passwords for anything banking related - partially just to keep those credentials completely offline and partially because the password manager doesn't really play well with the bank's concept of a separate pin and password where you are only prompted for certain characters when logging in. Also, wherever possible, don't rely purely on the password stored in the password manager, setup two factor authentication for every provider that supports it. Another thing you can do is have a "common" part of a password that you remember but never store in the password manager, prefix this to every password. You therefore have a password manager storing the half of each password which is different for every site then you memorise the other half of the password which is the same for every site but never stored. If the password manager was ever breached (as unlikely as this is) then an attacker would still be unable to log into any accounts without knowing the "common" half of every password. The other thing is to take care when picking a password manager and make sure you go with a reputable, well known provider. Avoid picking them from those nonsense "Top 10 password managers in 2018" lists on minor "Top Computer Tips" websites. Also, if you are concerned about storing the password database in the cloud, there are plenty of password managers which run locally and store the password database in a file, the largest one I can think of is KeePass - This would at least be a good improvement on using a OneNote file.I keep track of my passwords with a simple text file on my HDDs (which I occasionally copy to a flash drive). I also use browser's saved passwords/logins feature. I use a random generated password with a program I wrote that generates it randomly. Of course over time, I end up memorizing passwords. I have a few rather long completely random ones memorized, simply through repetition. having it stored locally- and in plain-text files- seems risky but my logic is that unauthorized account access is usually a result of having a password and E-mail address compromised by one login or web page. For example, if say the CH password database was compromised it would be possible for whomever gets it to over time to "hack" the passwords and figure out what they are. At that point, they might simply try that same password on any accounts that are connected to CH; if you use the same password there, they get access to that as well, and maybe THAT links up to some other accounts and stuff. Having different passwords everywhere or at least as many different passwords as possible prevents that "chain" from progressing very FAR. Compared to that I consider the risks of local compromise to be far less substantial (I don't recall dealing with any infections on my own computers in the past 10 years or so- I have seen weird executables running and freaked out only to find out it's a part of Intel's drivers or part of Windows (and is digitally signed and in the correct place). It would also require my system to not only be infected, but infected in such a way that it allows an actual person to go through my stuff, as the sort of malware in question typically just grabs data from well-known locations- like say browsers, or stuff like those bitcoin miner programs which save wallets or whatever that is all about, and fire it off to the malware author. So far this approach I feel has been sort of "reinforced" in that I have had the first happen with about a half-dozen of my accounts across the web over the last decade or so, and was easily mitigated because the password that the "hackers" would have was used nowhere else.- I've even seen in the logs for my website that some of those compromised passwords were used to try to login to the root login, possibly by doing a big of research and discovering it linked with my E-mail address... so if I had used the same password there, I would have had a massive PROBLEM on my hands (Though I even have mitigations for that so I can fix it ASAP- I am sent an E-mail if an IP not on a specific list of IP addresses logs in to the root account. Other than one that I had sent to me during my own test, I've not had another yet!) I've considered storing the "plain-text" information on, say, a Veracrypt volume, but the way I see it, the more layers I add, the more complicated the solution becomes and the more problematic it becomes in general- more stuff can corrupt, be lost, I can forget a password that I didn't write down or record for "security reasons" and lose all the others, etc.Old school...i write them down and store in 2 safe places...on top of the other methods discussed above...I keep all mine in a password protected Excel spreadsheet. to the OP, you just have to find an approach that works for you, where reward is more than effort. Why can't everyone just get along??!? Thanks for all the opinions. And, Mark, I think you're right. The big thing for me is to get separate passwords for everything - I have just two or three "go-to"s that I always use. Question for BC_Programmer, like I said, I keep mine stored in my browser, too. I figured that was super-risky, but you don't seem to think so?I keep my notes in a Safe Place. It may be the old school choice, but I use RoboForm and it works very well.I also keep a list of passwords that are stored automatically on devices (e.g., email, Netflix) so if one device gets lost I can quickly know what needs to be changed ASAFP. |

Solve : Privacy filter for laptop? |
Answer» Hi, I am thinking of buying a privacy filter for my laptop. The ones I have seen so far are all non-sticky filters that are designed to be fitted onto the screen with tapes (either directly sticking it on the edge of the screen or sticking LITTLE plastic bits on the frame of the screen so the filter doesn't fall out). I have also seen some that are designed to be shoved into the gap between the plastic frame and the screen glass. I have been wondering why there doesn't seem to be any sticky ones that just stick on the actual screen without the need of tapes, kind of like the ones being put on the PHONE screen and you have to keep the air bubbles and dust away. I am just wondering why they don't seem to SELL the same type of filters for laptop or if I am just looking in the wrong directions. It will be very helpful if I can FIND out more about the privacy filters! MANY thanks.A privacy screen filter ? ? |

Solve : Next Radio. Get FM radio witout data usage.? |
Answer» This is new to me. Many, maybe most, smartphones can receive FM radio tiredly. The chip had the circuitry to recitative standard local FM radio. They claim it even works on Apple devices. I don't think that is so. Why wouldn't it work? It is an app that connects an iPhone user to those radio stations that happen to stream their live output. Salmon - You're thinking of a station streaming it's content. This involves having actual FM Radio receiver hardware built into the phone as if you had a pocket transistor radio. It would be subject to the limitations of radio (fade, noise, static, etc) but the advantage is that listening to it wouldn't effect your data usage like streaming does. My Samsung Galaxy S7 is supported. It requires that you plug in headphones so it can use the wiring in the headphones as an antenna. Works decent enough, I'm currently listening to a local Classic Rock station (96.9 The Eagle, Sacramento, CA). This station does stream as well but this is an alternative way to listen. Quote from: strollin on May 27, 2018, 06:55:33 AM Salmon - You're thinking of a station streaming it's content. This involves having actual FM Radio receiver hardware built into the phone I know the difference. I am an Android fanboi. My Moto G has an FM chip and a built-in app to use it. Geek noted that Apple phones don't have FM radio chips, and mentioned something called nextradio which he "didn't think" would work on Apple phones. I said it would because it uses streaming radio stations if the phone's FM chip is not activated (or is absent, as in Apple phones). You're right, the app will stream aswell but, as I said before, streaming will use data. Quote from: strollin on May 27, 2018, 07:15:10 AM as I said before, streaming will use data. I know. (Did I imply otherwise?) I have been using smartphones since my first ZTE in 2009 and they have all had FM radio chips. I regard the streaming method as the clunky alternative. From what I can find, as with the chips USED in Android phones, Apple's A# (or at least A7 and A8) Chips have integrated FM Receivers. Of course whether they are *available* is another question which I don't have the answer to. Music on Smartphones still kind of defies me. It SEEMS like you need to use some sort of music streaming service in order to get a reasonable experience. I have a Nexus 6. I was able to, after some effort, find the *legitimate* version of VLC on the Android Play store, And I copied over a section of my Music Folder, but VLC seemed arbitrary in what it saw. It was missing entire albums, missing specific songs, or it was seeing some of them and then not letting them play. I couldn't find any pattern- of the things it found, there was FLAC, VBR MP3, normal MP3, OGG; and of the things it didn't find was the same file types and properties. Paired with the fact that the battery lasts maybe 3 hours when playing music, that 32GB of space has to be shared with everything else on the phone, and that even if I was able to get all the music to appear, I'd have to laboriously build playlists one music track at a time by digging through various hamburger menus, I ended up wiping most of the music tracks altogether and just use my "Walkman" MP3 Player for portable music. it only works properly with MP3, which is why I wrote a bulk transcoder that converts files to MP3 from various source audio formats. And if I was inclined to listen to the radio- the MP3 Player has that already anyway. Doesn't need an "App" installed either. The Smartphone? "$400 glorified alarm clock" is the most accurate description of it's usual TASK so far for the last 4 years. I've been using Total Commander file explorer and media player across my last 3 smart phones. Lightweight, no ads, and seems to play everything I ask it to. Lots of plugins. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander&hl=en_GB Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 27, 2018, 09:45:56 AM Music on Smartphones still kind of defies me. It seems like you need to use some sort of music streaming service in order to get a reasonable experience.I've occasionally listened to Google's Play Music app (pre-installed on Android phones) and enjoyed it. And, for some great music videos, youtube can be hugely enjoyable. Of course, listening to quality stereo sound requires a headset (wired or bluetooth). My Moto G 3rd generation has USB OTG (On The Go) so I can plug a 64 GB pen drive in with a good selection of my music library. I can't do that with my mp3 player. Nor use my 17 GB Google Drive, as I just found out and tested. I have a 4 GB/month data plan, so I can do a bit of streaming from the cloud. As it is, my plan rolls over about 3.5 GB every month. (I then have 30 days to use it). There are many smartphones that do have the FM chip installed. I have found at least two apps to turn it on. I also found two old phones in my junk box with FM radio in the settings. To be honest, the quality was good, but not great. Anyway, there are few reasons to use it. Think of it as tool for certain jobs. Example: You go to a public conference and you find the sound system is mushy and hard to hear. The organizers knew ahead of time and warned DELEGATES to bring an FM radio and earbuds if they find the sound is weak in some parts of the auditorium. In that case your smartphone will give you good sound via the local FM device they have just for this purpose. This is a common practice at convention venues. |

Solve : Looking for people with older machines and Iomega drives ;)? |
Answer» I am wondering if anyone out there has any OLD machines (Win XP or earlier) that MAY ALSO have an Iomega Zip drive. I have a .1-step file that I'd like to restore, but this can't be done on Windows 7-10 machines and also NEEDS to be done from a Zip drive with the regular software, so I guess I'm looking for the collector types out there. |

Answer» Ok, not breaking news yet So I put this in other. They want you lo help them. But I did not post this to for tat reason. Rather, I put this here as a matter of interest and maybe some intelligent talk. What do you think? Would Sales Tax for Internet trading hurt or help overall? Why? Why Not? Or will it not make any impact?Once again, I thank GOD I am British. Quote from: Salmon Trout on May 16, 2018, 12:40:49 PM Once again, I thank God I am British.Salmon Trout, You may ALREADY have heard that the USA imposes tax on its citizens even when they go abroad and work in another country. http://time.com/money/4298634/expat-expatriate-taxes-us-myths/ Quote Unfortunately, the idea that you’re no longer in thrall to Uncle Sam is a myth—and only one of several misconceptions people have about the taxation of U.S. expatriates. ...And it gets worse the more you read the US law. Solve : x86 emulation on ARM. When? - If ever.? |
Answer» You have already heard this before. But HEY still try. Gigabyte and Cavium are offering the H621 2U server platform, which can scale to up to 4 dual-socket ThunderX2 nodes—with the highest tier ThunderX2 SKU at 32 cores and 4 threads per core, this works out to 1024 threads. Each node has 16 DIMM slots, and Cavium touts the system as being able to address up to 4TB of RAM. The H261 is available in two storage configurations, one with 12 3.5" drives, or 24 2.5" drives, both of which support two low profile x16 PCIe 3.0 Slots and 1 x OCP x16 Mezzanine Card. EDIT: For those who missed it, do a search on: Intel Files Suit Against Transmeta. I don't SEE them killing themselves. The product is for a market niche, not to make a windows server or work station. Therefore there is no need to emulate or have an x86 mode. It is, what it is. If you want to RUN X86 operating systems there is 100's of CPU's and boards designed for and better to the task than a special ARM board. And why would you hobble an ARM CPU with Windows 10 ? When AMD and Intel seem to have the windows market sewn up. If looking for small and x86, I bought myself a small tablet the size of a kindle fire that has an Intel processor that has Windows 10 and x86 execution. I have been bringing software over to it and seeing how well or not well it runs to test its limits, but the coolest thing is that I can program programs for x86 execution and now my programs have the portability of a tablet the size of a kindle fire. Only drawback to the tablet I got with Windows 10 on it is that it only has 32GB storage and came with 8GB free, and it needs a Windows 10 update, but not enough room on the internal storage to perform the update, so not doing anything with it like banking or anything like that. Just keep in the back of my mind that its version stuck for now until I come up with a way to BRING it forward without bricking it.Fully updated Win7...The HP Envy x2 must be a collective hallucination, since, apparently, it can't exist. It was not my intention to suggest the x86 emulation would soon benefit Windows 10 users right away. The company mentioned in the article is going for lower costs of ownership for Internet servers running low-cost or free Linux base software. Eve m so, if they pull it off, it could mean better mobile devices sporting all Windows software. I would like that. In commercial work low power consumption is a key objective. For individuals it means better mobile gadgets. Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 11, 2018, 01:05:40 PM Eve m so, if they pull it off, it could mean better mobile devices sporting all Windows software. I would like that. Why do you say "if" they pull it off? There are ARM devices using x86 emulation to run Windows on the market right now. The Envy x2 uses a Snapdragon 835 SoC. 22 hours battery life, allegedly. It's another mis-construed Geek news article...no worries.Patio, if Gigabyte and Cavium cando what they claim, it will become important. However, I will not hold my breath any longer. |

Solve : Best New CPU for You. Inel with AMD? |
Answer» This was ANNOUNCED earlier, so it is not recent news. Here is abn article that explains why you want the new thing from INTEL ad AMD: Input CPU with AMD graphics in the package. Last year, when AMD’s Ryzen and Intel’s Coffee Lake burst out onto the scene, the long-standing rivalry between the two manufacturers blew up. And, now that Ryzen 2nd Generation is out, and Intel’s Cannon Lake is coming out next year, that fiery competition is going to keep burning. Luckily, this only benefits the consumer – there’s never been a better time to buy one of the best processors.Source: https://www.techradar.com/news/best-processors I want one. it may be the best time to buy a processor, but it's still the worst time to buy memory and graphics cards. Quote from: Mark. on June 03, 2018, 07:11:26 PM it may be the best time to buy a processor, but it's still the worst time to buy memory and graphics cards.Right! However, They say 'Best budget CPU' now is an Intel Pentium G4560. With the money you save you can get a good graphics card. It might be worth mentioning that with regards to the Chips in the OP it's probably a more reasonable selection if you actually intend to use the built-in AMD Graphics; if you don't, and plan to use a separate dedicated graphics card, than other CPU which trade the Radeon graphics for other features probably make more sense anyway. Because of that I'd say that when building a system using it one can probably only "worry" about Memory in terms of the current inflated prices. Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 03, 2018, 09:37:23 PM Right! Not a horrible plan. It would, of course, depend specifically on one aims to be doing with their system, and I think there are other considerations. PROS: Great Price, as you said- Right now, the G4560 looks to GO for 77.99 CAD on Amazon.ca (I'm too lazy to switch to amazon.com for USD price comparisons here...) There are upgrade options to more capable chips on that same platform/socket. More money of the initial cost can be put towards a better graphics card. CONS: It uses the LGA 1151, which is a number of years old. This can be a "limiter" preventing the use of some of the more recent CPUs (including the ones you note in the OP, of course). I built my current system in 2014 and it is using a i7 4770K which is one of the more capable CPUs available with the socket. feasible upgrade options may require motherboard support/consideration up-front to avoid a motherboard replacement, which may MEAN the system needs a more expensive motherboard. As above, it will also be a "limit" factor in terms of things like Memory, which means you are "stuck" with DDR3. IMO, The cons are hardly a factor unless you are chasing benchmark scores, or PLAYING the latest games on amd settings and even the smallest framerate dip makes the game "literally unplayable". And I expect, over time, the price of the "upgrade" from that Pentium CPU to something more powerful will drop considerably. On the other hand, you can get lower-end CPU options for later platforms/sockets for similarly reduced prices, which may very well be a better all-around option depending on the specific goals. |

Solve : Computer displays nothing? |
Answer» Hello. My names Tyler and I'm here today because my computer won't display. Honestly, I don't even think it's booting. There is no beeps for me to check the beep codes, I've even checked to make sure everything is connected correctly inside and outside the computer. Integrated Graphics Processor - Intel HD Graphics support Best way to test power supply would be to bring it to a shop for someone to test it for you or swap it with a known good power supply that is proper wattage to power the system.Same problem with the integrated graphics as it was without it. At least that's one less thing that could be wrong. Guess I'll have to take my psu to a shop and have it tested, don't have another rig to test it with on hand sadly. Thanks for the help so far! I'll post an update when I can.Best of luck and were here to help if you need more assistanceAn update. I dunno what compelled me to PLUG my computer back up and try it this morning but it actually did something new and I want to see if it sheds light on my situation. The computer turned on - front panel led lights coming on, the speaker beeping, and it stayed on this time. Even displays something. The thing that has me posting an update? The display is nothing but a black screen with a underscore-like line towards to top left corner. Dunno what this means but I'm hoping it helps somehow, even if only by showing what's wrong. Any ideas? That appears to be that it got past the BIOS POST and failed to load the OS. This could still be the power supply. Just enough power to get beyond post but not enough for the hard drive to properly function to pass information to system RAM to load OS properly. Other thing to know is that when power supplies die they can damage things, so its best to get that power supply tested vs turning it on and off a bunch of times. Usually nothing bad happens, but if the power supply created an overvoltage condition then it can fry STUFF. The biggest danger now is if the data on your hard drive gets corrupted as it starts to work and then BAILS out because not enough current or low voltage etc. |

Answer» Just wanted to share this with everyone in case you overlook this feature in Windows. My one system was running low on free Hard Drive space and I saw that Windows 10 was almost 50GB in SIZE. I WENT looking to see what I can get rid of that might not be necessary and found the Disk Cleanup utility built into Windows 10 and with everything checked including system files, I was able to get 23GB of space back. Security flawsyeah the V5.33 malware issue is long resolved, but there have been many other versions with issues since. the latest, v5.45 (since pulled) had a 'phone home' feature that couldn't be stopped to collect anonymous analytical data.Same tool that was discovered in AVG...Nice! |

Solve : Learn a Spoken Language on your PC.? |
Answer» While surfing the web, I found this: There are so many excellent programs that can teach you a language, no matter what your needs or your budget. Sure, Google Translate is getting better all the time, but you just can't rely on it for everything! Here you'll find information about the ten best options for learning a language yourself, including the best free programs, the best for beginners, and the best for those who want to brush up their skills in a particular language. To my surprise there really is a good free program. In fact, it is very good according to the PC Magazine review. Quote Duolingo has a wonderful interface that's easy to use. It also presents bite-size learning, making it a great tool for studying in short sessions. You can set a goal for your daily learning SCHEDULE, and some gamification aspects encourage you to hit that goal consistently. If you're motivated by leaderboards, points, and in-app rewards, Duolingo will keep you enticed. I highly recommend Duolingo either on its own or as a companion to another language-study program. Of course, learning to speak a language well is never easy. Except for Children Bother of my children are Bi-Lingual because they grew up in another country before we came back to the USA. If you can no afford to LIVE abroad for a few years, take a look at new software for learning a language at home. My wife has been using Duolingo on her phone to help her learn Catalan. She says it's a good way to get started with the speech side of things. Quite a lot of good ways of teaching the language at this MOMENT. I like the most distant learning of Skype from language speakers. Very well helps to understand the nuances. On this basis, there is EVEN an aggregator of language courses . All teachers are native speakers of the language and teaching are very pleasant and promising.Removed content.... found out that the link was from 2007. I use to belong to Live Mocha and thought they were back in business for free learning, but Rosetta Stone bought them out and force you to pay now. For a couple years I was learning German and Russian for free and helping others to learn English. They had where you could read and listen to languages and then submit typed in that language or recorded in your own voice in that language for other peers to reply to with corrections or feedback. Then one day the website went from free to paid only and I was locked out losing contact with many great people from around the world interested in learning other languages. Here is the old link of what they use to provide for free: https://freelanguage.org/learn/livemocha-com-live-mocha-social-language-learning-course-and-networking-website If I need to communicate with someone online who English isn't their native language... Google Translator works awesome and its free to type whatever you need to be said to them in another language and then copy/paste that for them to read in chat etc. Additionally on Second Life there is an addon that can auto translate your language to other languages so you can chat with people who dont understand English because it translates through Google service to whatever language they are using and vice versa, so I can see their response in German and then it populates the chat box with the English conversion. From google translator below: Hello World, This is English to German through google translator. Hallo Welt, Dies ist Englisch zu Deutsch durch Google Übersetzer. There is a need for more people to learn another language. How many languages are SPOKEN in Papua New Guinea? The official languages of Papua New Guinea are Tok Pisin, English, and Hiri Motu. In addition, there are over 820 indigenous languages. English is the language spoken within... the government and the education system, but is used by only around 1-2% of the people. Reference: answers.com/q/how_many_languages_are_spoken_in_papua_new_guinea I just leave Telemundo on TV when i go to sleep...i'll be fluent in Spanish in about another Month... ... Sleep with book under pillow too! The language courses have taken a genuine increase and people are more and more interested in learning more languages. It makes them feel that they have conquered something great.Learning a new language is conquering...no matter how it makes them feel... |

Solve : Xtra PC: Why you don't want it.? |
Answer» This is a negative non-review. I like their sales pitch.YEAH, the posts are old, but there is no reason to think the product has become better. Now if you want Linux on a USB, that has been well covered elsewhere and it will cost you nothing . You use any USB storage device you want. My personal choice is an very old Laptop PATA drive from a broken laptop. Works great with Ubuntu 16. Similar versions of Linux also install on any USB storage device. The trick is to learn how you get your BIOS t o boot from USB. There is not reason to pay $35 to $50 to have somebody tell you how to boot from a USB stick. You can use Grub4Dos and a USB stick and have a Linux live CD ISO with persistent storage without spending any money other than the cost of the stick. I have a 'recovery' USB-3 stick permanently mounted behind my PC which has a boot menu to SELECT any one of these ISOs: gparted-live-0.18.0-1-i486.iso Hiren152.iso KNOPPIX_V7.4.1DVD-2014-09-15-EN.iso MacriumRescue10.iso If there is any trouble I can boot quickly (USB-3 device on USB-3 port) and operate on drive partitions with Gparted, recover from a Macrium drive image, run Hiren or Knoppix. Pen drive cost the equivalent of $10. + 1 ! |

Solve : What is new with economy printers?? |
Answer» Has printer technology and marketing slowed down? Or am I just ignorant of what is forthcoming? Just now I did a Google search for: Does anybody here understand my confusion? Not at all...I went with a mono LASER printer about 8 years ago and you couldn't pay me to go back to an inkjet. Laser printers have a higher initial cost but they are cheaper in the long run because they have a lower cost per printed page. In the 8 years I've owned this printer, I've only needed to replace the toner cartridge once. Of course, that depends on how many pages you print. I just checked on-line and see an HP - LaserJet Pro M15w printer for $80. I've never used that particular one so can't comment on it but the price seems right for someone wanting to get into laser printing without spending a lot. BTW, technically, thermal printers don't use ink or cartridges. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 16, 2018, 05:57:23 PM Huh? How can a printer not use ink? Mine doesn't use any ink. Neither did the one before. Only inkless printer would be thermal printing on thermal paper I would think. But only point of sale systems really use thermal paper and thermal head printers that I know of. I bought 2 low cost laser printers 3 years ago and when the cost of toner for them tripled I then tossed them away for a new Brother HL-L2300D monochrome laser printer because toner is more realistically priced. I moved away from inkjet printers years ago and actually miss my Epson LQ-1050+ dot matrix printer for cost of printed pages being the cheapest with $10 ribbons that would last about 1000 pages printed each as well as with a little WD-40 you could get another 100-200 pages printed when ribbon was dry and able to be wet again and squeeze out another 100-200 pages before too faded to see or ribbon got a hole worn through it from the matrix needles hammering through it. I personally wish that they would make a printer that you could just PUT a Bic pen in it and it print everything out at the cost of pens. There is a Lego Printer project someone made that is able to print that way similar to a dot matrix where it sweeps across the page adding ink where needed and in the end forms a printed page. Although it would be single color in everything printed. Some of the newer Inkjet printers don't use cartridges, but instead use Tanks, which you refill directly. Thanks all. Maybe I will get a new black only simple laser printer. Some model snow are well below $100 and the toner is within a reasonable cost. This one looks promising: https://www.amazon.com/ Look for: Brother Monochrome HL-L2350DW But I do not understand how you replace the ink. Epson makes a nice tank inkjet. They claim 4500 pages plus per tank set. In a laser printer you usually lift a flap, pull out the old cartridge and push in the new one. A new cartridge will have a sealing tab you have to remove. It is very simple, and there will be an instruction sheet in the box.Seen some people forget to remove the seal tab and try to force the toner cartridge into the laser printers... as with everything if it dont fit in easily inspect for why and dont force it. There are some cheap laser printers that are just a toner drum that is replaced. The transfer drum and all that remains and is used until it wears or gets damaged with scratches etc. BASICALLY they made it low cost by making a tube drum that can be removed off the the cartridge itself, so the rest of the components that make up the cartridge that would in most other printers be replaced each time is instead reused. So your basically just replacing the toner compartment of the cartridge and the rest of it is reused until failure. Only issue with this type of printer where its a toner drum is that if you think your toner is out and its not, you could have a mess on your hands if you unlock it and remove it and it still has toner in it and the door on the drum doesnt close all the way. We had a woman in the office the one day very upset when she got covered in toner from one of these cheap Oki laser printers. Upgraded to a HP business class printer which had a toner cartridge that was much harder to color yourself in toner with.I believe it is dangerous to use a regular vacuum cleaner to deal with a toner spillage because it can cause a fire two ways: (a) toner conducts electricity and can get in the motor and cause a short, and (b) toner has electrostatic PROPERTIES by design and a fast moving stream can build up enough of a charge to cause an explosion or fire inside the vacuum cleaner. If it doesn't cause a fire it will very efficiently clog all the pores of a bag. Also if it gets on clothes and skin, get it off with cold water. Hot water will make it bond. It will wear off skin, but what bonds to clothes is there permanently. |

Solve : Any phone can be eavesdropped?? |
Answer» Phone waves can be eavesdropped? just like radios can hear telephone waves. Just don't say anything over the phone you do not want others to hear. Like when you're in a crowded bus?As the article at your link states, Quote "Google said it "categorically" does not use what it calls "utterances" - the background sounds before a person says, "OK Google" to activate the VOICE recognition - for advertising or any other purpose. It also said it does not share audio acquired in that way with third parties. So, I'm not going to start powering off my phone except with actually using it, based on a notion that everything said within my phone's hearing distance is being listened to. I might prefer going back to a basic cell phone rather than accept such inconvenience with my smartphone. Just because yer paranoid does not mean they ain't out to get you...I bet there are law breakers who say "they caught me cos my phone was listening" when really they have built up a profile that led law-enforcement to them. Then I have more problems to ask. I only use phones that can make calls and text messages but it automatically activates calls to numbers that I have ever contacted. I have been so many times. Did someone activate something to break my cellphone?Sigh.Do you carry your phone in a pocket? Do these "automatic" calls happen when you're carrying your phone this way? Unintended calls can be the result of "pocket dialing". Read the article; it contains TIPS for avoiding the problem. Quote from: Allan on September 03, 2018, 03:10:40 PM Sigh. Then I will tell the story like this. The new phone numbers I ever contacted. My phone suddenly dialed their number and they were sleeping at night. It does not happen once but many times and makes them angry. If I had dreamed of sleeping or touching an automated call, it would not have happened so many times Another thing is that the sound is like radio waves and SOMETIMES hear the voice of another person. You talk to a person and add a third person you do not know where. There must be a device that can impact the phone wave without installing anything?longshinshen, Where do you live? Who is the service company? There term "Crosstalk" is associated with older analog forms of communication. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosstalk But "Digital Crosswalk" does not show similar defects. It is very different. Therefor,if you hear sounds you can identify as voices, it has to be some form for acoustical or analog crosstalk. In other words you have a very old and primitive telephone service. You need to get a real digital cellphone service.I have heard that just using old phones you will not be eavesdropping. If you have a phone with no storage, you do not have spyware installed. Like some eavesdropping services, how can they eavesdrop on you? I used to watch news that a group was pretending to be a government person and asked the victim to transfer money to that account. What did they do to lure the victim into a trap? Because not all the victims are silly. I want to know about eavesdropping and how to avoid it and it's best to ask at an online forum. Quote I have heard that just using old phones you will not be eavesdropping. If you have a phone with no storage, you do not have spyware installed. Short answer to this is that you could have a very primitive phone, but the telephone provider records all calls. Over a period of time all recordings are overwritten. They started this initially for 911 but then expanded on this some for investigatory purposes into criminal or TERRORIST activities. This is how the USA is, but elsewhere in other countries the recordings may not be overwritten as often and eavesdropping could be without a court order. In the USA there is behind the scenes paperwork that has to be met in order for FBI to gain access to communication info. No form of communications is completely secure from being recorded unless physically isolated from providers of communications and range limited or encrypted private communications which could be recorded but unless someone has a means of decrypting the recorded scrambled message its worthless. Quote I used to watch news that a group was pretending to be a government person and asked the victim to transfer money to that account. What did they do to lure the victim into a trap? Because not all the victims are silly. They gather info on their targets such as names of family members etc and use that as a tool against these people. The uneducated and gullible get taken for a ride. Additionally the demands in some cases should raise a red flag such as payment in prepaid cards for something. Quote I want to know about eavesdropping and how to avoid it and it's best to ask at an online forum. If you are chatting about stuff that isnt illegal then there is no fear. Using a technology that is mass produced and a provider especially involved will always have eavesdropping recording of all communications at that provider. If you get a phone call for any reason where they want money hang up on them and wait for a bill in the mail and then check the return address on google to see if its the correct address to that identity. As long as you pay your bills on time etc I very much doubt you will see an increase in money requests by mail.Much ado about nothing... If it continues to *censored* = dial i'd get a new phone...just sayin... |

Solve : Computer or Browser is Slow? |
Answer» (I was not sure where to put this question....)I have Windows 7 professional and I don't know what's going on exactly. I'll explain as best I can. I leave my pc on all the time with the internet on. After a little bit of non-use, my pc monitor goes to sleep as it should. Recently it has become not unusual for my monitor to be slow to COME on when I move the mouse. Once it does come on, my internet (I have Firefox browser) does not want to respond. In other words, I click on my webpages and they either won't open or it takes an excruciatingly long time to do so. So I have to restart the computer and then log back on to my internet. Everything is then fine. It may do okay for many hours or I may come back in a few hours and it's the same story all over again. Sometimes a message will come up saying a WEBPAGE is slowing down the browser do I want to stop it? I click "yes" but it generally has little effect. Does anyone have any advice or guess to what is going on? It's getting to be a pain restarting my pc a lot! |

Solve : Microsft News. Do yu have it?? |
Answer» No, not news bout Microsoft. Microsoft News delivers breaking news and trusted, in-depth reporting from the world's best journalists. It is reported to have been reviewed by over 34,010 people and has an average rating of 4.3 on a scale of 1 to 5. It does sound impressive. Here is a 5 star: Quote It's a really great app for catching up on all the LATEST news around the world. It ALSO aggregates news across various geographical boundaries and varied topics. If you are voracious reader then this is a must have app. Here is the WORST, one star: Quote The app no longer goes past the splash screen that shows the word "news" in multiple languages. I've tried REBOOTING, uninstalling and reinstalling. I really like the aggregated content and wish I could see it again. Both of the above are new reviews posted in August. Here is a link for news apps on Google play: Play Store News App Collection. Do yu have it? Is it good? It's pre-installed with Windows 10. Like most of the preinstalled crapware included with Windows 10, it's loaded down with advertisements and many of the articles are clickbait or sponsored.there's about 15 pre-installed MS Apps in Windows 10 that I remove for new installs - that's one of them. |
