This could be a script error or it could be something else, but the pop-up windows that were working are not now. They are PRODUCT detail windows with an add to cart button. I have attached the script from the page if someone can look at it and see if there is an issue with the writing. I don't think I have ever changed anything on this page in order to not make it work, but I have been adding JAVA scripts to other pages on the site, if that makes a difference. I installed the Modem as per instructions.  Installed drivers as well and then restarted computer.

When I was installing my ISP software, (I use Earthlink dial up) it requires me to register an account.  I already had one so I put "I have existing account" and I put in corresponding information that it requires.

In the end, it requires that my computer makes a call to the registering computer to verify info.  It picks up, gets a dial tone, but doesnt dial!  It either TIMES out (the woman comes on "the time alloted for you to dial has been blah blah blah") or i click "disconnect". Either way, my computer restarts, i log back in and i get a popup "System has just recovered from a serious error" and I'm back to square one.

I tried doing the modem test suggested in the HELP books of the installation cd.  I managed to figure out that my computer is communicating with my modem.  I DO get a dial tone, however, in the end, it doesnt actually dial anything, and it always ends up restarting my computer.

BTW, (i dont want to create another thread for this) how would i go about getting an RMA for my motherboard and CPU?  (Just in case we figure out that those components are the problem)  What things should I lie about or not tell them (that would void my warranty)?   Quote

I'm on the VERGE of calling the guys at GeekSquad.  So I'd be grateful if someone can help me.  

I can't type in fields within websites.  I can't click into the field with my mouse, nor can I tab into the field from the keyboard.  

For example, on the Google homepage, you're SUPPOSED to type what you're searching for in the BOX in the middle of the page.  I can't get to the box.  I can click on, and tab among, all of the underlined phrases.  But I can't get to the box.  This happens on all websites I try.  

Any ideas?

I have been building web pages for a short time using Dreamweaver. I found several templates that I would like to use but they all come with .jpg and gif files that seem to be from either Painshop or Photoshop. Each picture has "Mydomain.com" or some text in the picture that requires change. If the background is a solid color then I can cut and fill to same MATCHED background and put in my own text. HOWEVER a good many that need change have a complex background like a scene or person which I am unable to change. I have Paintshop and not Photoshop which may be needed. It would seem that maybe these pictures may be done in layers and save as such and require different SOFTWARE to be able to work on separated layers.
Is there something that I'm not seeing or doing that I could get some guidance on?

Can you upload a SAMPLE so we can try?  If the picture is copyright protected, you can't (shouldn't) change it without the author's SAY so - they're watermarked with the domain.com logo so you'll go to them and ask (pay) for a picture without the watermark.  If it's not a copyright issue, let us try to help

Does anybody knows how to edit a text file trought php. It should be something like this: a text box where you can see the things that are written in the text file (*.txt) and you can edit it. A bit like the moderators of this forum can do. Edit a written text in a text box. There shouldn't be special things like Bold etc... just a box where you can edit a textfilfe and ofcourse a save button

Can someone help me in sorting out the a problem i am facing with my computer. When i try an open a WEBSITE it opens. But when i want to open another ONE, it gets replaced on the same page which is open. So i CANT open more than one web page. Its really difficult ot work like this.

On my site that i'm developping I have a script that shows an loading picture intill the site is fully loaded


However it shows properly in internet explorer, FIREFOX doesn't. The image isn't properly between the BORDERS of my div (see picture)

JAMEEL AHMED SIDDIQUIForms usually have to be processed by a server-side language such as Perl, PHP, Python or ASP.  You will need to learn such a language if you want to do this kind of sophisticated thing.  There are lots of tutorials out there, so try using Google.

ok I'm starting to work on my first robots.txt  and all i want to do it block them from going to my other directories. the only one i want them to be able to access is my public_html directory..

Your Robots.txt file looks fine. It seems that Google and other search engines will not index those directories.

You MAY want to allow CERTAIN directories to be indexed, and just block the SUBS inside them.

For example:
I have a forms directory. If I wanted to prevent the admin panel from being indexed only, it would be

Disallow user agent: *
disallow: /forms/use/CHSurveyResopnce/admin/ (not a valid directory)
instead of just blocking the ENTIRE /foms/ directory.

Will inserting a Loading/Progress bar into a Web-page make any difference to how long the page takes to load. ??Why would you want to do that?  Browsers already have their own progress bar.  yes.. true, but I read somewhere that if you insert one in your page, images ett load at the same time, whereas sometimes you have to wait for images to load one at a time seperately. Hello, I'm new here and hoping you could perhaps help me with this html problem.

I have to show a list of over 4000 booktitles, with additional info about them.
When this list was still small I used a table and found a simple javascript 'SORT' routine that works really fine. (You can see the small one here if you like.)
But since now 4000 titles is too long for one page I have to break this table up into different pages, but when I do this 'sort' function doesn't work any more, at least not for the other pages.

So, what I basically need is to either make it sort all pages (which would mean break up the table), or else to still use this one 4000 rows long table yet only show part of it (f.e. 50 at a time). But I wouldn't know how to do either.
This is my problem (and I hope I've made it CLEAR a little , English is not my native language).
How could it be solved in an easy way?

This is a job for PHP and a database.  Do you have any knowledge of server-side programming?Sadly, no. I know HTML only and I'm able to implement some pre-cooked javascripts.
I'd prefer an easy html/javascript solution given the short amount of time I can give to it, but I'm always willing to learn.
I would suggest putting the data in a single CSV file, load it into an array, then sort that way.  You could limit which of the lines of data you write to the document.  But doing this ACROSS pages is somewhat laborious and processor-intensive at the client end.  I've never tried doing this kind of thing client-side, because PHP is much more efficient at this kind of task.

It MIGHT be a bit too much to learn a new programming language just for this task.  On the other hand, I guarantee that once you've learnt PHP and SEEN the performance benefits and the versatility of the language, you'll end up using javascript much less.

I thing the is most good and simple I disagree.  Browser support for IFRAME is mixed and variable.  The very nature of PHP lends itself to use within an ordinary HTML page, not within separate frames...

Your ques is not clear to me.

Do you want to upload a .ppt file to your site ? Or are you trying to show some powerpoint cliping through your site?


In any CASE, you can upload the ppt file to your server, and you can view the file DIRECTLY if you are using internet explorer browser.

In other browser (like opera) it will show as a downloadable (i.e as a .ppt file)

Go to your server's (i.e. site's) control panel and there would be an option to upload the file!

I am taking over my website shortly from my webmaster.  He has used many files and converted them to jpg format, and seems to be unwiiling to give up the original files.  Is there any way to edit jpg files???You should be able to save them to your hard drive by right clicking on them and selecting Save Picture As.  Then, you can edit them with any photo/image editor.  MS Paint, which is part of all WINDOWS computers, can be used for simple photo editing.  If you have no other photo editing programs, try a popular freeware program called IRFAN View.Most of the files are not specifically pictures, bute text, such as a menu..Is there any reason not to convert those menus to actual text?  Do you really want to have to modify or create a new image file to update a menu?  I just don't want to re-invent the wheel.  Some parts of the menu have changed, so you are saying to just enter it as text?Yes, that's generally the preferred way to create "text" menus.  The only reason for creating an image just to display text is to prevent someone from easily copying text.   Using an image also makes creating links to the menu more complex since it may require a technique called image mapping.  In other words, you must mark different parts of the image for different hyperlinks.  Make sense?  Also, why make your web page file unnecessarily large by using an image where text will SUFFICE?  The word, text, takes four bytes if coded as text.  If it's displayed within an image, it will take many more bytes.  

No offense, but the fact you're ASKING these questions indicates you have a lot to learn about developing web pages.  Have you given some thought to how you're going to learn what you need to know?yes, tutorials, books , trial and error, and asking questions.  I just thought there was a shortcut for doing this with the old jpegs.  I created my own menus for the store which are QUITE elaborate, via Illustrator.  I know there is a wealth of knowledge to know for web building, so lets consider this brain aerobics....I own dreamweaver and do not find it too difficult to use. But advice is always welcome..No shortcuts for "old jpegs".  Some helpful links here on image mapping, under More Examples.  If you own a scanner, you probably also own some optical character recognition software.  You can use this to extract the text from images, provided it is not too obscured and difficult to read.  If there is a LOT of text, then this is a worthwhile way of proceeding.  You also may want to reopen dialogue with the former wemaster.  If he's relinquishing the web site, it doesn't make sense for him to be precious about original files!

A major reason not to use the text-as-images method is that it makes the website utterly useless for blind/partially-sighted web users (who use screen readers).

Hi this is my first TIME posting.  I was hoping for some help.  I am currently at my university that uses a proxy server that does not support AIM.  AIM is my only way to communicate with my family right now without spending alot of money.  If someone could help me by telling me a way to bypass the proxy or configure AIM properly that would help alot.  I have tryed to configure it but never successfully.  it also prevent me from starting any application except web browsers.  I am a member of the application orb and it no longer connects on my computer.  Also sightspeed does not work.  If there is a way around this i would be very happy.You have at least TWO options: AOLExpress and IMCourier.  They're slightly different in the way they work.  CHOOSE the ONE that suits you best.well yes that works fine and dandy except it solves only one problem.  AIM works with express however nothing except web browsers can CONNECT to the internet still.You may have to settle for webmail.  Why not talk to your university's I.T. department about this?  They may have some useful suggestions.

I would like to see if anyone has HTML code building an Audio matrix. ESSENTIALLY I want to be able to string together separate audio files to play consecutively. I understand you can set up a player and the files will play on after another ...but... there is too much lag time. I need the files to play seamlessly, as though it were a conversation.
  For an example: You can build a matrix with different SENTENCES. A person CHOOSES a different sentences and when you click "Done' they appear in a paragraph. The only difference is I want to do this with audio files.

KensterI very much doubt you can do that with HTML code alone.I concur with Raptor.  Do you have any PHP experience?  If so, have a look at the OpenAL section of the manual.  You can do a lot with server-side power.Negative on the PHP experience....but apparently I need to get the Cliff notes. Kenster.The trouble is that HTML isn't for programming, and javascript is very limited.  If you want to do fancy stuff, PHP, Perl, Python or (shudder) ASP are the way to go.  You COULD also achieve this with a Flash app, but I can't help you there.

I am seeing one photo (of a very coold dude) and all the links, but not a lot else.  All of the links point to files on your computer - you perhaps haven't uploaded them to the web host yet.

You can make the photo a background image in a DIV container with specified height and width, and then place your text within that DIV.  That should pose no problem.  Using FrontPage however WILL pose a problem.  It does weird, inexplicable, non-standard things with HTML.  >NVu< is better, and free.  Alternatively, Dreamweaver is excellent (but costly).Hey,

Content checking is very important for uploads.  I think we have already discussed placement of uploads?  Certainly you must never let a user directly upload a file to an accessible  location within your web tree, since this could theoretically make it possible for them to upload malicious code and execute it remotely.

The content checking depends on what sort of file you expect to receive.  If you're expecting an image, you can use the GD library functions to see if the file really is an image, for example.

What do I mean by "exchangeserver"? Just more of a folder in my site, set as a sub-domain, that allows a user to upload an audio or image file.

Okay.  You know how to upload a file?

After the file is uploaded, you run a script that:

• renames the file (use some sort of randomiser, and check for conflicts)
• puts the original filename, plus any description into a database, along with the new name.
• optionally runs a GD library function to test if the file really is an image, or you could use the ID3 funtions for limited testing of MP3s

Try using CSS where it need. It calrify your code. Also for the IMAGE setting u MAY use html styles.

Is there a JavaScript for when a user right-clicks an image?There isn't a right-click event as such, because this is so OS-dependent.  But you will find >this< tutorial helpful.  Note that many browsers make it possible to disable any code that alters the context menu.  I have this function switched on, in my browser.This script will give an error if you USE right click. ?>At a guess, you've got your question mark in the wrong place, i.e. include($_GET['p'].'p?=welkom');  should be include($_GET['p'].'?p=welkom');

But this is not a great way of programming a safe script.  In what way are you checking that the GET variable 'p' is clean?  Also bear in mind that SESSION variables can be faked or stolen.  A much safer way of authenticating without resorting to SSL is described >here<.   I recommend reading and re-reading that article until you understand it.

A little tip for POST/GET variables, which aids readability (I always use this):

Just another thought to add into the mix: I'm currently working on what will become a reasonably significant international database- & authentication-driven website.  I am avoiding the use of the javascript md5 library described in that article.  Instead, I'm using several different levels of logon.  Basic logon provides limited access to database features, and exposes no private information.  Administrative logon provides access to higher-level features and private resources, and each admin session is locked to an IP address, username, password, and shared key which is randomly generated at the start of the admin session.  (i.e. virtually impossible to hijack)  Finally there will be superuser level access which as well as having the above protection will also be IP locked at the IIS level to a few limited static IP addresses.

All of that is driven by php/MySQL without the use of javascript and therefore will achieve the desired effect on ALL browsers (provide they support session cookies).

Hi, I am experiencing difficulties viewing thumbnail .jpg and .gif files on webpages. It SEEMS that the thumbnail jpg file and gif file appear as a red x. When I try to open the file to view the larger image, it says "this page cannot be displayed".  This is a recent problem that has happened.

Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.Which operating system are you using? How do you connect to the internet? Does this only happen on a CERTAIN website? Is your browser accepting cookies?

But, it does not seem to be all jpg/gif picture files.  It seems to be SPECIFICALLY some thumbnail files for larger images, not thumbnail jpg/gif files that link to other web addresses.  Sorry if this is vague, but some sites I can view files okay and others I can not.Put up a sample website.Are you using Photoshop to modify these images? If so, be SURE that RGB is selected before SAVING them, I've had people have problems with this before.

Our business plan is as follows:
We create our web pages.
We have salespeople in many locations, they all make their money on commissions.
The web replica they will use, contains their personal information, but our web content.
At the same time, we can keep track who sales what, to pay the commissions.

I know we need a database, to keep track of salesperson developement,
We have no idea on how we can replicate our pages in sub-domains, and across the country, thru the internet.
I would like to have some pointers, ideas, and best approaches.
Something much more clear than those confusing results from search engines.

Yes, that's what I needed to know. I'm sorry, but I don't have the knowledge to help you. Please wait for another forum member to respond to your QUESTION.You don't need "web replication".  One database, one web server.  Several domains all pointing to the same physical machine/IP address.  The scripting on the web site can detect which domain has been used to access the site and respond appropriately.

You are looking at several thousand pounds/dollars worth of web design here, by the sounds of it, plus weeks/months of development.  Judging by your opening question this won't be a "do it yourself" job.  You may even be looking for a FULLY fledged eCommerce site.

Look around for a good web design team - preferably one that's recommended or WHOSE WORK you've seen and liked.  I can recommend an excellent firm here in the UK (no I don't work for them or get commission!).  Send me a PM/email me if you're interested.

Of the free offerings, Simple Machines Forum is IMHO better.  But if you're looking for a secure forum, you would be best advised to search for one that is advertised on the basis of its security.  It is likely to be expensive, but in your case that is probably worthwhile.

But before you do that, could I just ask - why was it so expensive?  You weren't stored important data files on your web server were you?  A frontline webserver needs to be protected and separated from other mission-critical roles for this very reason (damage limitation).  You also need a bulletproof backup plan.

Back again. A QUICK question. My website begins with graphics at the top. I have PUT descriptors and keywords etc into the head HTML. Google has picked up pieces of the first stretch of text, which is not what I wanted. If I put 'alternate' text under the graphic at the top, would that register OK with the search? Thanks.....Google is a law unto itself.  You cannot determine what Google will index; their POLICIES can (and will) change without warning.  This is partly to defeat search engine spamming.  The best you can do it make a page LAYOUT that is logical for all users - inluding those who are vision impaired.  Think about it: blind FOLKS use screen readers, and these rely on alt tags, amongst other things (how else do they know what pictures are?).  Whether or not Google's cache will change as a result of what you do to your page, you should use alt tags anyway.

For search engine purposes, you could try using a hidden div containing the text you want indexed, at the top of your page.  e.g.:

  Whatever text you need.

NOTE:  in text editor, i had to "make plain text" under the Format tab, and check "ignore rich text commands in html" in order for my html to show up correctly in Safari.

At the top of my home page I've put my website title, followed by a subtitle that I'd like to APPEAR directly beneath it.  Each has been assigned a different style (title is large, bold and in caps, while the subtitle is smaller and in italics).  At present I've got them in the same cell separated by a PARAGRAPH (return).

I've been unable to figure out how to reduce the spacing between them.  Can I do it as they are or must they be in different cells?  Or something else I'm missing?  I have no problem with paragraph spacing on text that's the same style.

Really, paragraph line spacing is best controlled by CSS, but if you're not comfortable coding in plain HTML, then CSS may be a little way off yet.Thank you.  I was aware of shift+enter, but wasn't sure if that would work.  I do have things set in external CSS VIA Dreamweaver--HTML code and I don't get along too well  :-/  but I can probably do one or two codes without too much trouble.Okay, well in CSS, you COULD style your paragraphs thus:

p
{
  margin: 0px;
  padding: 0px 0px 0px 10px;
  line-height: 110%;
}

Adjust as required.

And you could use class definitions to style specific paragraphs:

p.compactpara
{
  padding: 0px;
  line-height: 80%;
}

In your HTML, you'd then need the class attribute for the paragraph in question - can't remember how this is ACCESSED in Dreamweaver, other than using the code browser.


<p class='compactpara'>This is a compact paragraph [etc].</p>

Using Front Page 2002.  I have managed to get SOUND on my web with ON/OFF controls, using this tag, <p>
<embed width="128" HEIGHT="128" src="My%20Webs/myweb2/_Acti-Rudy_Ves-8657.wav"height="3" width="3" playcount="-1" loop="true" autostart="true"&gt; </p> BUT,.. and there's always a But,.. Other people can't here the music, because I was told the music file had to be downloaded to the server.!!

See if there's an FTP connection option.  If so, you can use FTP Surfer (see the software FAQ), and things will start to make a lot more sense.I copy/paiste images into my web folder,.. even music wav files.. then publish my web,.. then when I update my web, I just edit it in front page and publish again.
I have an audio wav file on my home page.. also in my about me page.. which works on my pc. but I believe you won't hear it on your pc. http://talismanpr.netfirms.com
