Answer»

OK, so I am NEWBIE and first I just want to thank everybody for forums like this. I was just about to toss this computer at the wall.

My problem is this computer is soooooo soooooo slow. Belive it or not it is barely year old. The place were I am buying the laptop from told me to bring it in and they will do something called "SYSTEM RESTORE".They said that I will LOSE everything, because they will make it so it is like the computer is coming out of the box for the first time. So my first question is how do I save my pictures, music, microsoft office and all of the other programs I have added to my computer? The second question is, will I lose Norton Anti Virus? or is that safe during a system restore?

Now as I said before I told the guys that my laptop is running slow and they said they are going to do a SYSTEM RESTORE, is this something you would suggest be the fixer for a slow, freezing pain in the a** laptop? if not what do you suggest I do?

Here is my System Properties
Dell
Inspiron 1501
Windows Vista Basic
Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3500+ 1.80 GHz
446 MB
32-bit Operating System

My Computer Rating is a 2.0 which is determine by the lowest subscore
3.7 for the Processor
2.0 for the MEMORY Operation Per Second
3.5 for the DESKTOP performance for Windows Aero
3.1 for the 3D business and gaming graphics performance
4.6 for the Disk data transfer rate

Here is my other problem. I would like to uninstall WINDOWS VISTA and install WINDOWS XP. Would this fix some of my problems?

I just need some advice please on what to do. Quote

The second question is, will I lose Norton Anti Virus?

You will want to be rid of Norton Anti-Virus. It uses a lot of system resources, and is most likely a small part of why your system is running so slow. There are alternative anti-virus programs that are resource-lean.Thank you for your response Aegis.

I think I am stuck with Norton for 234 more days. Do you have any suggestions for anti-virus programs that are resource-lean?
Norton is a secondary problem.
Your main problem is:
Quote
446 MB
I'm assuming it's 448MB, not 446MB.
You have only 512MB of RAM, from which your on-board video takes away 64MB.
Vista needs 2GB of RAM to run properly. Thanks Broni for responding to my problem.

When I click on "view basic Information about your computer" under the memory(RAM) it has 446 MB.

So does this mean I have to uninstall Windows Vista and use Windows Xp? That is what somebody told me

All you need is more RAM. Go to www.crucial.com, enter your computer make, and model, and it'll tell you what you can get.
Most likely, you'll get 2GB of RAM for around $50.
Going back to XP is too much trouble, and 512MB for XP is barely enough, anyway.in response to getting rid of norton...

get avast or avg antivirus, they have freeware versions which simply gives you only basic virus protection with the automatic daily updates. Uses less resources and does job FINE. As always, they're always updating their virus databases at least once a day so don't worry about it not having good detection rates.
