Solve : Can I copy the drivers on my computer to prepare for a new OS install??

Answer»

I just bought a new laptop. It came with Vista Home Premium on it. My IT guy at work says I need Vista Business Edition.
I bought the upgrade DVD, and am currently waiting for Microsoft to send the 64 bit version. I'm assuming I will need all the same DRIVERS that are on the machine now. Can they be copied onto a cd for reinstall, or will I have to go on the web afterwards and download them?

JimSince you have an "upgrade DVD", rather a full version disk, the drivers should be retained when you install the upgrade. In other words, you aren't going to be formatting your hard drive, which ERASES everything on the hard drive, and then doing an entirely new installation of Windows. Installing the upgrade will make major changes to your current system, but does not require formatting the hard drive and starting from scratch to install Windows.

By the WAY, can you tell us why the IT guy said your need Vista Business Edition? What do you do, or plan to do, that requires Vista Business Edition? And, why do you need the 64 bit version? It came with 64bit and I was just keeping it the same. Funny though, why in the world would Microsoft sell the up grade for $200.00 then when you open the package tell you to send another $9.00 for the 64bit DVD?
I will use the computer in a domain at work. They tell me the Home edition will not connect or something.

Oh, what about all the other stuff that came on the machine. I know the Business edition does not support the Media Center stuff, but it came with a web cam and a digital TV tuner, and Blu Ray DVD
I just saw somewhere else that someone said there is no direct upgrade from Home Premium to Business. Is that true? The Upgrade DVD I bought did not indicate that.
Jim Quote from: jimpl on August 17, 2008, 08:44:41 PM

I will use the computer in a domain at work. Built in digital tv tuner, and the Blueray dvd read/writer.
I have used the web cam while "Skyping"and I watched TV on my laptop, so I know they came on the machine. I didn't put them there.
JimContact the manuf. and order a 64Bit Driver CD for that machine...
If it's not available i wouldn't proceed with the install ...i'd save it for another machine.
