Solve : Cannot Defrag? |
Answer»

The last time I used my defragmenter it worked fine. Hasn't been too long ago, however, today I decide to defrag, and I get a message saying C:windows\system 32\defrag.msc does not exist or it is not an mmc console or was created by a later version of mmc, or I do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

Firstly, why would this happen totally out of the blue and secondly, is there a fix??

Thanks so MUCH.

Click here to find out what information I should add when submitting a question?Sorry, I have a Dell Computer and am using Window XP. I have not uploaded any new software or added new hardware. I believe there was a Windows Update this past week, but nothing else. I did a System Restore back ONE week, but that did not help.

Thanks.

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win2000/t1048172512

Go Start>RUN, type:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt type:
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
Hit Enter.
Type:
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll
Hit Enter.

After that, open Windows Explorer, navigate to:
C:\WINDOWS\INF
Right click the DFRG.INF file, and select INSTALL.

Restart computer. Thanks for the info. It did not work for me.
Go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy.A problem there as I do not have the XP CD. When I bought the computer, it had Vista on it, I took it to the shop and had them put XP on it, however, they did not give me the CD. I have a Home Edition of XP but it is asking for Professional.

Is it possible you can borrow an XP Professional CD?I DOUBT it. I don't know anyone who has the professional cd.
If I download another Defrag program like jkdefrag, would that work just as well?

Thanks.

JKDefrag works pretty well but I like IOBit Smart Defrag.
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/iobit-smartdefrag/iobitsmartdefrag.html

Try that and see how it works.Ok, thanks so much for your help.

Don't forget to post back. DisKeeper Lite
Auslogics defrag

2 other FREE choices. Thanks to all for your help. Since I do not have the Professional XP for Windows disk, I could not follow thru on the instruction given to me. None of the other fixes SEEMED to work. I did a system restore and that did not work. Therefore, I will use one of the defrag downloads that have been advised to me and hope that will take care of the defragging. How I hate when something happens for no apparent reason. But such is the life of a computer. Again, thanks to all of you who tried to help. This is a great site for help.

Hugs!

Margaret (BabyAnn) As it was said on this board many times before, everyone needs Windows CD sooner, or later.

| |
