Solve : computer can't recognze ethernet cable? |
Answer»

Hey-

There was a STORM- lightning struck and my circuit breaker sparked and my computer shut off and restarted. After getting my Charter services back, it appears my computer can't recognize the ethernet cable and won't connect to the internet. I know it is not a problem with the cable itself because I am using it on my old computer right now.

I have tried unplugging the modem while RESTARTING the computer, disabling the ethernet and reenabling it, and resetting the IP address. None of this has helped.

I have Windows Vista, by the way.I hate to tell you this, but a surge suppressor can't protect you from a direct lightning strike...only power surges...up to a certain point. Depends on the rating of the surge suppressor.

Anyway...

I'd recommend you turn everything off...unplug everything...and open the computer CASE to check for any fried components...

If the computer starts up fine...and you're able to use it...but still can't connect...it's possible the modem took the hit and may need to be replaced.

You also said the suppressor sparked...that may need to be reset or replaced, as well. The computer starts up fine and everything works. It's not the modem. I don't know how to open up the computer itself.

I just bought the thing last month at best buy and was going to take it to them if all else fails. They're obligated to do something within the first 90 days, right? Not if lightning killed the network interface.the computer company may not cover the warranty because it was caused by lightening strike. The surge of power has fried your network interface on your motherboard as DIAS de verano has suggested

| |
