Solve : CPU usage stats not adding up?

Answer» <html><body><p>OS: <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/xp-747558" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about XP">XP</a> Pro<br/>CPU: "Dual Core" Pentium 4. There are <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/2-236987" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about 2">2</a> cores. Both report to be Pentium 4.<br/><br/>The other day, I looked at the task manager and I saw that the "System <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/idle-1036473" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about IDLE">IDLE</a> Process" was 97% of CPU usage. The combined <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/time-19467" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about TIME">TIME</a> of the CPU was 97% unused. Other users not being shown would not have an effect on the number. The performance <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/tab-25634" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about TAB">TAB</a> reported that for a neighboring moment the CPU was 44% busy. Core 1 was about 2% busy. Core 2 was about 86% busy. I have no reason to suspect that the two moments of usage were any different from each other as the respective graphs said that the CPU had not significantly changed it's work load over the time I was looking at the processes list.<br/>So could anyone tell me why the task manager is telling me that 100-44=97? Can they write viruses or bots that cordon off one core for their own use such that I see that they are using my CPU but it is not reporting to the process list.</p></body></html>
