Introduction : Road accidents often take place in a city where vehicles run on the road in a large number. सड़क-दुर्घटनाएँ सड़क दुर्घटनायें प्राय नगर में होती हैं जहाँ गाड़ियां भारी संख्या में सड़कों पर दौड़ती हैं। यह गंभीर चिन्ता का विषय है कि हर जगह सड़क दुर्घटनाओं में निरन्तर बढ़ोत्तरी हो रही है। सड़क-यात्रा में कोई भी सुरक्षित महसूस नहीं करता है। थानों, अस्पतालों, बीमा कंपनियों और समाचार पत्रों के आंकड़े बताते हैं कि सड़क दुर्घटनाओं की संख्या प्रतिवर्ष बढ़ रही है।

♦ सड़क दुर्घटनाओं के कारण

1. सड़कों पर बढ़ती हुई गाड़ियों की संख्या मुख्य कारणों में से एक है।
2. सड़कों की बुरी दशा भी इस समस्या के लिए जिम्मेदार है।
3. सड़कों पर आगे बढ़कर दुकानें लगाना समस्या को और बढ़ाता है।
4. बिजली आपूर्ति बाधित होने के कारण संध्या के समय सड़कों पर रोशनी नहीं होती।
5. ड्राईवर की गाड़ी चलाने की कुशलता को चैक किये बिना ही उसे ड्राईविंग लाईसेंस दे दिया जाता है।
6. गलती करने वालों को दण्ड नहीं दिया जाता।
7. धूम्रपान करना और मोबाइल पर बात करना ड्राईवर के ध्यान को बाँटता है।

♦ रोकथाम के उपाय

1. जहाँ कहीं भी आवश्यक हो सड़कों की तुरन्त मरम्मत की जानी चाहिये और समय अन्तर पर उनका निरीक्षण होना चाहिये।
2. लाईसेंस प्रदान करने के नियम कठिन होने चाहिये और कठोरता से उनका पालन करना चाहिये।
3. समस्त सड़कों पर अनुचित कब्जा हटवा देना चाहिये।
4. गलती करने वालों को दण्ड देने के नियम प्रभावशाली ढंग से लागू होने चाहिये।
5. ड्राईविंग को चैक करने के लिये वीडियो कैमरे द्वारा नियन्त्रण और अचानक चैकिंग होनी चाहिए।
