Solve : Help with Windows 2000?

Answer»

Well, I cannot drag or move icons on my desktop, can't copy and paste. I can't open task manager using the CTRL+ALT+DELETE method. Also, after a while my desktop disappears. I didn't really have anything downloaded. This problem just OCCURED. I have no clue what to do and I need help. I cant open my volume control either, because it says no active mixer devices available, but it USED to work fine.We will need a bit more info on your system specs ,OS and what happened prior to thos to prevent a long winded guessing game...Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <>< :-)Service pack 4. Unfortunately I don't have any antivirus protection except for AVG Free EDITION. It started happening like a week ago, I tried to get help from other forums but nobody replied. I am using windows 2000 professional. It worked good but then it the problem occured. I used a registry cleaner after I virus scanned and I got rid of the bad files but the problem persisted. The reason your replies might be non-existent is due to the lack of info...
As this can be caused by numerous things the more you tell us about your system etc. the better we can come up with workable remedies...
For example what type of machine is this and how OLD ? ?
What Registry cleaner did you use and why ? ?
Those can be dangerous.
Does the system boot properly before the trouble starts ? ?
Did you run AVG and did it find any troubles ? ?

You know important stuff like that.Like I said its windows 2000, I don't know what you MEAN by what type of machine it is. The registry cleaner I used was eusing registry cleaner. I thought it might help. Yes the system booted properly. I ran avg once, it found problems on svhost32.exe and others and got rid of them. Then I found out the database of viruses was outdated and downloaded the newer one and it found over 8000 threats in my temporary folder.Quote

Then I found out the database of viruses was outdated and downloaded the newer one and it found over 8000 threats in my temporary folder.

This is what is meant by supplying more info...your machine is badly infected and again it could be a number of things.

First DLoad install and update the following:

Don't run them yet.

Spybot Search and Destroy
AdAware
Stinger
AVG Anti- Spyware ( different than AVG Anti Virus.

After updating and installing these shut down your machine.
Dis-connect from the web physically router/modem.
Re-boot into safe mode by repeatedly tapping F8 as soon as the machine is powered on.
Run each scan and let it finish completely ( this may take awhile as it sounds as you haven't scanned in awhile)
Let each program fix what it finds.

After this run Disk Cleanup and defrag. These might also take some time.

Power down and hook your connection back up.

DLoad Hijack This and post the log in our virus and spyware section. It will take more than one post to get it all.

We can then look further for nasties.

Be patient...we'll get you there.Ah thanks for your help I will get right on that. You might want to print the instructions out as you will be dis-connected from the web for awhile...
