Solve : Internet not working?? |
Answer»

Hey all, um...I'm not sure, maybe this has been seen before, if so, just a link will help-My HP laptop, the one that some will recall has been nothing but trouble since the day I got it, has struck again!

Here's the 411:

HP Pavilion dv9000 CTO laptop custom built to MAXXED specifications-
No viruses out of 2 antivirus programs-
System defragg just because it needed it-
No recent changes except repeated reinstallation of Conexant HD sound card driver (retarded thing)-

Problem:

Internet does not work...no that's not true...

AIM and YIM work 100% normally, just dandy, but opening up either FF or IE results in the same error message that results when there is no connection-

"Unable to connect: FF cannot establish a connection to the server at www.google.com."

Have tried A) restart, B) antivirus, C) optimization, D) FF and IE, E) multiple webpages, including local connection, F) Battle.net and other program access, like WoW, G) waiting for a day...

Nothing works, and after...LESS-than-helpful...HP support sessions, it was time to hit the big guns...

I'll throw out there that I'd like to try everything else BEFORE resorting to system restore, because I am not fond of Windows' (ESPECIALLY VISTA'S) System Restore (bad past experiences with it) and I have enough valuable data that it cannot be easily backed up w/ the tools I have on hand...

So yeah I must run away before I am caught...PLEASE HELP!Assuming you have done a full virus scan you may have picked up some poisoned DNS servers or a malicious hosts file. To check and see do the following:

GO to start, run, type CMD, press enter.
In the command prompt that appears type NSLOOKUP and press enter.
Now type server 4.2.2.2 and press enter.
Now type www.google.com.

You should see this:
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.l.google.com
Addresses: 72.14.253.104, 72.14.253.99, 72.14.253.147, 72.14.253.103
Aliases: www.google.com

If you do, then you probably have poisoned DNS servers or a hijacked hosts file since the 4.2.2.2 name server is returning the correct IPs, but your system isn't getting them even though you can get to AIM which doesn't require any DNS resolution.

Go to Control Panel, network connections, right click on your local area network, click properties.
Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and double click on it.
Make sure that both options are set to "Obtain Automatically" now click on Advanced, click on the DNS tab and remove any DNS server entries you see in the top box. Click OK, click OK.

Now open up My Computer, click on Tools, Folder Options, click the View tab, scroll down and check "Show Hidden Files and Folders", and uncheck "Hide System files", click ok.
Now go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and find a file named hosts. Right click on it, select RENAME, and change it to Hosts.old. You might get a warning about changing the file extension, say yes.

Now reboot your system and see if you can get to websites.
Thanks for the prompt reply! Sorry, I had to head off to bed...

As you said, the nslookup DID result in a non-authoritative-

Your further instructions said to go to

Control Panel -> Network Connections -> LAN -> Properties

Because I have changed my Control Panel Display, Network Connections is not an option...I can go to Network and Sharing Center, which, thanks to HP and Vista x64, does not work properly and instead prefers to do the proverbial "(Not responding)"

Here is a screenshot-includes the frozen Network and Sharing Center and a properly running AIM and the cmd.exe window...

Network and Sharing does not respond to any commands, and does not terminate normally (the only way to exit is to terminate the process or the application from Task Manager, which results in a recoverable crash of Windows Explorer)

I pray to God that the setting isn't in the Network and Sharing Center since that PoJ has given me trouble for a long time now and has not worked...LOL i ALWAYS forget to attach my pictures!!

HERE you go LOL

note the pic was edited for file size restrictions

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]It sounds like you may have some more serious problems.

If there's no way you can get to your network settings there's not much I can do for you. Have you been through the entire malware removal procedure in the virus/malware forum? If not, you should do that, just in case. You may also try going to Device Manager and uninstalling the network card, then rebooting and letting windows reinstall it. That might help.... ooooooh uninstalling the card sounds like a good plan-i will try that

and yes, this laptop has been unending problems since...no clue when...but def since i got it...

DON"T BUY HP
DON"T BUY VISTA

*goes to uninstall card*didn't work QUOTE from: TheEmperor on February 24, 2008, 09:52:26 AM

It sounds like you may have some more serious problems.

If there's no way you can get to your network settings there's not much I can do for you. Quote
the one that some will recall has been nothing but trouble since the day I got it
I think, you're playing with fire by not taking advantage of warranty. I am on my laptop...issue honest to God resolved itself-after a handful of reboots, the Internet IS back...Network and Sharing Center is still acting up, but I'm fine with that as long as the Internet works. Thanks for all the suggestions and help GUYS!

| |
