Answer»

I am using windows vista. I turned on my computer and it loaded past the green loading bar with the MICROSOFT logo but it stops at a blank screen with a mouse curser shown that I can move around.

The safe mode does the same so I can't use system RESTORE

Aynbody have a fix for it? And no, I don't have a install disk on hand. What lead up to this problem. It was all of a sudden, or any hardware or software changes or viral fixes etc?
i think it was a software issue but i don't know what happened. it said to reboot and and i did and it didn't load anything except that black screen with the mouse like I said earlier! Quote

i think it was a software issue
...which was?i have a usb flash drive with 4gb of space, and I don't care if I hae to reformat it. I guess I can get linux onto the flash drive and all will be glory again. At least it runs is all I care. Then I can get windows back on if i wanted to.

anything?!

I think it was a software issue but that doesn't matter that much if you can't even go to safe mode or at worst command prompt to get rid of it or do a system restore to fix the issue. I think the computer can READ the drive and is trying to boot it but it gets stuck at the empty screen with the mouse and there is no error message or whatnot.
Do you have a set of Recovery DVDs? Quote from: Broni on May 30, 2008, 06:59:50 PM
Do you have a set of Recovery DVDs?

I did say that I did not have any installation media on hand right now. And no, I did not make a recovery dvd. So no installation or recovery at this point. I'm at school right now and I have to wait until two weeks before I go home and be able to borrow the windows installation disk that sits in my pile of disks on my bookshelf.

So what can I do in the MEANTIME? I thought there was a way to install linux into a flash drive. I downloaded some files, and ran the boot.bat file to make the stick bootable but it keep on giving me some disk error please press any key to restart problem. For now, I'm just intereted in being able to boot the computer so I can view some pdf files without having to always go to the computer lab or the library. If you want to be able to boot a Linux Distro from a flash drive and have access to your files on the fubar'ed machine it may be best to build that flash drive on another machine instead of the one that has issues...

Instructionsis formatting the USB required? When I go to the BIOS, I can see the USB flash drive listed under the the HDD section of the drive booting priority section.

If that were the case, I'd just INSERT some windows xp portable package onto the flash drive and then just ask windows to boot from the drive. The school computers are all locked up in limited account mode so that I can't format the drive.

Will that work since instructions said I should format and rename usb drive using FAT first and I see that usb drive is already FAT32 type.If you want it to work ...yes i would follow all the steps outlined in the link above.
Also your machine needs to support booting to a USB device...check the manual. I think I can at least, the bios has that option to select my SanDisk USB drive to boot to instead of regular HDD.

All I was wondering is if I was required to format my flash drive before using. If it's already FAT32 you may not have to...but for something that's gonna take 10 seconds and assure a clean slate i would do it...I borrowed my friend's windows anytime upgrade cd and it had repair tool. I used it and it allowed me to use system restore and now I have restored my system to a clean point I made earlier. It works now! No more fubare'd system anymore!

| |
