Answer»

Hello,
these are the transcipts which i had written on other forum when my pc was not even starting.

"
Hello,
just a few weeks ago, i had put into use a software called -"system commander". LITTLE i knew about that it would become rather a big headache, as today... i tried to uninstall it. But to my surprise, after restarting; my pc just didn't started.
Its just showing a sign called- Boot 2>_ (with flashing undescore).
I can't understand how to solve this. This had happened earlier too, but at that time i had instead uninstalling ...deleted all the files of system commander. And after restarting, my pc had given me option for choosing the boot from A) windows ME(which works) ....and B) windows 98 ( which dosen't).

Now how can i restore my pc to its normal state???.

-------------------------------------------------------

I was asking about how to get my pc to give me options for getting it to run to its earlier normal state!.
I wanted to run my pc in safe mode, so that i can use the system restore. But i don't know which key to use now?.
Any solutions?.

-------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
that 'system commander' is a OS manager as well as partition manager.
I thought it useless, so i uninstalled it.
Mine is a compaq armada. Its manual says that it has a preinstalled windows98. The main EXISTING OS was windowsME. In times when i was inspecting 'system commander', after starting the software screen used to appear. In that there were names written like-
A) windowsME
B) windows98
C) fat16
D) fat32
E) ?/?

Then i used to press A, and windowsME used to load with all the existing files. I had also tried to press B, but the system got stuck and nothing happened.
At present only its just showing a sign called- Boot 2>_ (with flashing undescore).
Someone had told me to use F8 key, but nothing is happening.
Referring to the manual, my pc has a Fn key ...which has to be used correspondingly with F4, F5, F6 ....etc. for brightness, screen toggle, battery drain....etc. But there is nothing such written about BIOS setup.
I even have a useless manual for IBM pc, it says various things for using several function keys.
But at this moment, i am not able to do anything useful. I've tried several combinations but to no avail. I can't understand why that underscore is flashing?.
Another thing, i don't have back up cd. There is a back up OS cd for my pc as i have read in the manual.
So today i checked in the market and i came to know that there comes a 'bootable cd' of windows98. I am not sure if that would work. Will it?.
Whats the meaning of win cd???. Is it the same as a 'bootable cd'???.
But how to access that OS selection in compaq armada?.
And those command prompts that you are telling?.

-----------------------------------------------

continued......
-------------------
phantom

continued....
-----------------------------------------------

Hi, i just bought this windows98 bootable cd and loaded it in the starting, But nothing is happening. Again that same -
........Boot 2>._ (with flashing underscore)

And hardly any keys are working.

-------------------------------------------------

I went to a shop and thank goodness the owner had a bootable cd which was very much compatible with my pc system. After startup, in the dos-mode all the files were much looking intact. Running that startup for windowsME was also not a big task, but it got stalled at the 'startup disk creator' followup with only 3% DONE. Even tried for installing windows98, but at the same INSTANT the system got stuck.
Even tried SBminst, but it just shows that the software has been successfully installed. But after rebooting nothing happens. Again the same sign--....Boot 2>._
The owner has asked me that if i want to format the main partition itself and then install windows98 anew. But i am still unsure as it will erase my windowsME files and all others.
And also i wanted to ask,'what if after formatting my system becomes prone to hard-disk failure?.

----------------------------------------------

This happened to be an interesting phase. I booted sbminst floppy at startup and it did loaded. But every hd bootable sector option i clicked, nothing seem to work. Everyone giving error. The other day i bought a bootable windowsME cd and made a windows98 startup bootdiskette from a cybercafe pc. I used the startup bootdiskette to boot my pc and it worked. I came to the dos mode. I've learnt about dos in my college and got a good recall of everything. There are two partitions on my HD, :C and . C is the main, from that windows->option->install-> setup.exe
But during setup, it was showing error. So i directed that the windowsME setup files would load on drive. Successful.
Then after the first reboot, my pc started in safe mode,i.e. a shorter windows screen appeared. Then i transferred all my important files and program files which were in c: drive into d: drive. Even windows folder. Then i again started the setup.exe for that this time windowsME loads in c: drive and everything would resolve as normal as before. But after installation, the pc again starts in safe mode.
I would not opt for erasing my c: partition, so i thought for reinstalling windowsME from my newly bought bootable windowsME cd. But it showed some unusual errors. Perhaps my pc has internal configuration that it will install windowsME setup from its existing software only and not from any other bootable windowsME installer cd!!!.
I now don't know how to resolve my pc to its existing normal state,i.e. full windows screen. I have even read thru windowsME manual, but there is nothing written about coming out of that safe mode!. I've checked system restore, but no restore points were created.
Any solutions?.

-----------------------------------------------

Hi,

Yesterday, i was looking into the 'help' section for safe mode.

There it is written-

If you ended up in safe mode-

Then,

1) Reboot and check if it starts in normal mode.

2) Run 'sysconfig' and uncheck win.ini, etc etc files four in total and then reboot.

- but nothing happened.

3) Uninstall windowsME and again run setup.exe.

-huh but ....

Just the day before yesterday, when i was trying to search for setup.exe in dos mode. I executed it and tried to install windowsME in c drive. But the system was showing some error like winsu-, win.ini- files corrupted or damaged.

Now what should i do?.

Isn't there any utility to check if all the system files are ok.

In my case i want to check the files in drive c.

Any solutions?.

------------------------------------------------

I am still stuck in the last one.

-------------------
phantom

Partitioning programs, boot loaders, etc. should NEVER be installed until all important data is backed up. If you have done so, I would suggest FDISK and reformatting the drive after you make whatever kind of partitions you want.

How big of a drive and what are you trying to accomplish with multiple partitions. Computer make and model might prove helpful as well as RAM.Does your system have a CD burner? If so you should be able to use a KNOPPIX CD with which to retrieve your data files.

You can then fdisk re-partition, re-format and re-install your computer to its original working state.

WARNING! Do NOT delete any Compaq recovery partition on the hard drive.

"How do I access the CMOS setup utility?

For older product models, like the Deskpro 286 or 386, place the Diagnostics disk in the disk drive, reboot your system, and choose computer setup from the menu.

For newer products like the ProLinea, Deskpro, Deskpro XL, Deskpro, or Presario, press the F10 key while the cursor is in the upper right hand corner of the screen. You will have to correct this before you are able to go any further.
Boot to the first SC disk and select Repair or Remove options and follow the instructions.

patio.
Hello,
I am completely done with all of this, i checked yesterday that in fact...the video card, plug and play sound icons in the device manager were showing an exclamation mark. So i checked in their properties and the drivers were not working properly. So i tried to change the drivers, but the system said that it was already using the correct ones.
So something got into my mind and i thought of uninstalling windowsME, and again reinstall it...this time in drive c only. During setup, a new location was created windows.000 and everything seemed to go ok and then suddenly when the pc was checking for correct hardware present..it asked for windowsME cd key. I am completely baffled at this. How can i bring in a key no. of an OS which was preinstalled on my pc?.

Would u tell me about how to errase c drive complete by using dos command, yesterday i
typed
c:>format
error required parameter missing -
c:>_

and installing a new OS by cd rom.
I was looking into this new cd i had brought windows_ultimate collection.
In it ,i opened windows 2000 pro folder and found it was written i386. Inside that, there were many files which already exist on my pc.
Or perhaps its a base version.
Over it one should install windows98 or windowsME?...i think.
But i have this windowsME setup windows folder in drive c and also its corresponding floppy diskette in drive b inside the pc!.
How can one erase that!, or if one COULD then is it a possibility that the above mentioned base version like that of i386 will also vanish. Leaving my pc as a complete hardware junk!!.
I am now looking for windowsME serial cd keys, and hope one clicks. But i am unsure of how to restore those drivers for the video and plug and play sound devices. Btw other than that everything was ok.

Need solution.

-------------------
phantom
My pc specifications-
Compaq Armada 1500c
RAM-32
C drive-2 GB
D drive-2 GB
No backup cd
Only start up floppy
No system commander backup disks.
It will be very nice of you if you can write in Normal and not Bold. You were trying to reinstall Windows.

Now now, when you reinstall it will ask for the key, just to check that the CD is in the right hands.Hi,
I've checked and install successfully....windowsme.
But coz of all these above mentioned probs that my pc had to go thru, after setup; the previous video card is not in the configuration list.
My previous video card was named something like-
Chips and Tech 69000
Now it is different, so my monitor is showing no colour depth. And my windows size has also been altered.
I have checked into the manual, that when rebooting if one presses key F10....then a section for checking pc config and diagnostic page will open. But i did just that, and nothing happened. It came out as a booting mode choice page.
Is there any software or utility that i can check what is instored inside my pc...like video card...hardware ..etc. And use that software to change the settings and make that video card back in working condition and restore my monitor settings???.
Any solutions.

-----------------
phantomWhy are you booting win98/me........same system Windows98, No. Yes i had used a startup boot floppy diskette to get into the dos-mode. Nothing else.
Now that i have again installed WindowsME, i've created a windowsME startup boot diskette.
Thats it.

---------------
phantom

| |
