Solve : new problems follow mb change? |
Answer»

Hello,

I swapped my Asus A8N-SLI Premium mb because only one MEMORY slot was working. The switch went off without a hitch until I noticed that the TIME of day KEPT going out of sync. Obviously (to me) the battery needed to be replaced.

After doing that however, I found that when I booted up, the system would give me 4 beeps and stop on a screen that had the Energy logo top right, CPU fan failure center, and F1 and Del on the lower left. I checked the fan - that was running fine. I looked up the error code and found it to be a System Timer issue.

Looking further, it seems as if the problem would be in the mb itself or in the CMOS. So I cleared the CMOS. no change.

Frustrated, I hit F1 at the error screen and the system proceeded to boot - except that it said Operating system can not be loaded (or something like that). Finally I replaced my old C drive with a copy and the system booted - although I still had the 4 beeps and had to hit F1.

Also now most of my URL destinations are refused by my browser because of certificate issues - probably because of the CMOS clearing.

Q nr. 1: What's with the 4 beeps? Why does it give me a CPU fan error when the fan is running?

Q nr. 2: How do I get past the certificate issues on these websites? I can't even get my email!

Q nr. 3: Obviously my old C drive is dead - but how did that happen??? I never touched it, only replaced the battery.

Windows XP sp3, 2x nVidia 8800GT in SLI, 4 G memory, 2 HDs. Update: Later this evening it seems as if the browser problem has fixed itself. I no longer get certificate issues.

I will test out the booting problem tomorrow to see if anything has changed there. For a replacement MBoard this thing sure has caused a lot of headaches...i count 3 different Topics on it.Yes Patio it has. Like I've always said, nothing is never easy no matter how much people TELL you it is.

My latest update is that the first C drive now works - it didn't yesterday, but the four beeps and CPU fan error still occur upon startup.

So I guess things are OK...although you have to go through the beeping/F1 procedure each time you start the PC.

Let me tell you something...I grew up a scientist, did cancer research, and then spent 10 years in the computer field (1979-88). I have always been a hard-headed rational, logical person. Since I've been in computers however, I've come to believe more and more in magic. Of course I was assured that the board had no problems, but a board this old is suspect anyway. I don't know what I could say to ASUS since it was a used board.

What mystified me was the fact that the first C drive refused to boot (operating system not found) and then the next day, it worked fine. Nothing was done to it.

Yes it is the same PSU...750 watts, more than enough for this rig and only 2-3 years old. What BRAND ? ?
"Operating System Not Found" or "Missing operating system" error message when you start your Windows XP-based computerCorsair TXW 750 watt PSU

I'm still getting the four beep error every time I boot, but if I just hit F1, it boots up fine.1 long and 3 short ? ?
Or 2 long and 2 short ? ?

Listen to the beeps next time and post back with the results...how they sound makes a difference as to what it is...and there is no plain 4 beep code on that particular MBoard.four short beeps...none are long. I looked it up on this site and it said System Timer Failure.I didn't see that at all on the site...but if that's the error message replace the CMOS battery...Part # CR2032,,,available anywhere,,,
Make sure all power is removed when doing so...you may have to re-set the system time settings in the BIOS afterwards. That's exactly what I did after I swapped in the new (used) mb and the clock was wrong. I used the battery from the old mb and the clock is working fine.

But it was right after I put in the battery that this error code appeared.Update: Today when I booted up, the screen stuck on the Windows XP screen with the blue moving bar, so I rebooted.

The second time I got a black and white MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION screen warning me about newly installed hardware. There is no newly installed hardware.

The third time I rebooted it came up normally.

I'm thinking that it's time to reinstall Windows. Anyone agree?Does anyone disagree?

| |
